The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Слова́ Екклесиа́ста, сы́на Дави́дова, царя́ в Иерусали́ме.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.

Суета́ суе́т, сказа́л Екклесиа́ст, суета́ суе́т, — всё суета́!

What profit hath man of all his labour wherewith he laboureth under the sun?

Что по́льзы челове́ку от всех трудо́в его́, кото́рыми тру́дится он под со́лнцем?

[One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh, but the earth standeth for ever.

Род прохо́дит, и род прихо́дит, а земля́ пребыва́ет вове́ки.

The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.

Восхо́дит со́лнце, и захо́дит со́лнце, и спеши́т к ме́сту своему́, где оно́ восхо́дит.

The wind goeth towards the south, and turneth about towards the north: it turneth about continually, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.

Идёт ве́тер к ю́гу, и перехо́дит к се́веру, кружи́тся, кружи́тся на ходу́ своём, и возвраща́ется ве́тер на круги́ свои́.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full: unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.

Все ре́ки теку́т в мо́ре, но мо́ре не переполня́ется: к тому́ ме́сту, отку́да ре́ки теку́т, они́ возвраща́ются, что́бы опя́ть течь.

All things are full of toil; none can express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Все ве́щи — в труде́: не мо́жет челове́к пересказа́ть всего́; не насы́тится о́ко зре́нием, не напо́лнится у́хо слу́шанием.

That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which will be done: and there is nothing new under the sun.

Что бы́ло, то и бу́дет; и что де́лалось, то и бу́дет де́латься, и нет ничего́ но́вого под со́лнцем.

Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already in the ages which were before us.

Быва́ет не́что, о чём говоря́т: «смотри́, вот, э́то но́вое»; но э́то бы́ло уже́ в века́х, бы́вших пре́жде нас.

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be remembrance of things that are to come with those who shall live afterwards.

Нет па́мяти о пре́жнем; да и о том, что бу́дет, не оста́нется па́мяти у тех, кото́рые бу́дут по́сле.

I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Я, Екклесиа́ст, был царём над Изра́илем в Иерусали́ме;

And I applied my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: this grievous occupation hath God given to the children of men to weary themselves therewith.

и преда́л я се́рдце моё тому́, что́бы иссле́довать и испыта́ть му́дростью всё, что де́лается под не́бом: э́то тяжёлое заня́тие дал Бог сына́м челове́ческим, что́бы они́ упражня́лись в нём.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

Ви́дел я все дела́, каки́е де́лаются под со́лнцем, и вот, всё — суета́ и томле́ние ду́ха!

That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

Криво́е не мо́жет сде́латься прямы́м, и чего́ нет, того́ нельзя́ счита́ть.

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have acquired wisdom more than all they that have been before me over Jerusalem; and my heart hath seen much of wisdom and knowledge.

Говори́л я с се́рдцем мои́м так: вот, я возвели́чился и приобрёл му́дрости бо́льше всех, кото́рые бы́ли пре́жде меня́ над Иерусали́мом, и се́рдце моё ви́дело мно́го му́дрости и зна́ния.

And I applied my heart to the knowledge of wisdom, and to the knowledge of madness and folly: I perceived that this also is a striving after the wind.

И преда́л я се́рдце моё тому́, что́бы позна́ть му́дрость и позна́ть безу́мие и глу́пость: узна́л, что и э́то — томле́ние ду́ха;

For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.

потому́ что во мно́гой му́дрости мно́го печа́ли; и кто умножа́ет позна́ния, умножа́ет скорбь.
