I composed the first discourse, O Theophilus, concerning all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach,

1-2 У першій своїй книзі, Теофіле, [1] я писав про вчинки і вчення Ісуса — від того часу, коли Він почав Свою службу, і до Його вознесіння на Небо. Але спершу Він обрав апостолів і дав їм Свій Заповіт через Святого Духа.

until that day in which, having by the Holy Spirit charged the apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up;

to whom also he presented himself living, after he had suffered, with many proofs; being seen by them during forty days, and speaking of the things which concern the kingdom of God;

Після Своєї смерті Ісус з’явився апостолам. Він дав їм чимало переконливих доказів того, що Він живий. Протягом сорока днів Ісус з’являвся їм і розповідав про Царство Боже.

and, being assembled with [them], commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father, which [said he] ye have heard of me.

І одного разу, обідаючи з апостолами, Ісус наказав їм: «Не йдіть із Єрусалиму. Чекайте на те, що Отець Мій обіцяв. Та пам’ятайте, що ви почули це від Мене.

For John indeed baptised with water, but ye shall be baptised with the Holy Spirit after now not many days.

Бо Іоан хрестив людей водою, а ви будете хрещені Духом Святим. І мине не так багато днів, перш ніж це станеться».

They therefore, being come together, asked him saying, Lord, is it at this time that thou restorest the kingdom to Israel?

Тож коли апостоли зібралися разом, вони запитали Його: «Господи, чи повернеш ти цього разу царство Ізраїлю?»

And he said to them, It is not yours to know times or seasons, which the Father has placed in his own authority;

Ісус відповів: «Вам не дано знати часи чи дні, що Отець встановив Своєю владою.

but ye will receive power, the Holy Spirit having come upon you, and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Але ви одержите силу, коли Дух Святий зійде на вас. Ви будете Моїми свідками в Єрусалимі, Юдеї, Самарії, і по всій землі».

And having said these things he was taken up, they beholding [him], and a cloud received him out of their sight.

Після цих слів Ісус на очах у апостолів був узятий на Небо. І хмара сховала Його від їхнього зору.

And as they were gazing into heaven, as he was going, behold, also two men stood by them in white clothing,

Апостоли пильно вдивлялися в небо, де Він зник, коли раптом поруч із ними з’явилися двоє чоловіків у білому вбранні.

who also said, Men of Galilee, why do ye stand looking into heaven? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, shall thus come in the manner in which ye have beheld him going into heaven.

Вони сказали: «Люди з Ґалилеї, чому ви стоїте тут, вдивляючись у небеса? Ісус, Який був узятий від вас на Небо, повернеться. І це буде так само, як ви бачили, коли Він вознісся на Небеса».

Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called [the mount] of Olives, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath-day's journey off.

Після того апостоли пішли з Оливної гори до Єрусалиму, яка знаходилася на відстані приблизно одного кілометра [2] від міста.

And when they were come into [the city], they went up to the upper chamber, where were staying both Peter, and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James [son] of Alphaeus, and Simon the zealot, and Jude [the brother] of James.

Повернувшись, вони зайшли до кімнати, де на той час мешкали. То були Петро, Іоан, Яків та Андрій, Пилип та Фома, Варфоломій та Матвій, Яків Алфіїв та Симон-Зилот і Юда, син Якова.

These gave themselves all with one accord to continual prayer, with [several] women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

Всі вони постійно молилися разом. З ними було й кілька жінок, а також Марія, Ісусова мати, і Його брати.

And in those days Peter, standing up in the midst of the brethren, said, (the crowd of names [who were] together [was] about a hundred and twenty,)

Через кілька днів відбулося зібрання Ісусових послідовників (їх налічувалося близько 120 чоловік). Петро підвівся і сказав:

Brethren, it was necessary that the scripture should have been fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before, by the mouth of David, concerning Judas, who became guide to those who took Jesus;

«Брати і сестри мої, мусило збутися те, що Дух Святий проголосив у Святому Писанні через Давида про Юду, який привів тих, хто схопили Ісуса.

for he was numbered amongst us, and had received a part in this service.

Він був одним із нас і мав свою частку в тій справі, якій ми служимо».

(This [man] then indeed got a field with [the] reward of iniquity, and, having fallen down headlong, burst in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

(Цей чоловік одержав гроші за свій злочин і придбав на них шмат землі. Але він впав униз головою, і тіло його луснуло, аж нутрощі вивалилися.

And it was known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that that field was called in their own dialect Aceldama; that is, field of blood.)

Це стало відомо всім мешканцям Єрусалима. Тож поле це стало називатися їхньою мовою «Акельдама», що означає «Криваве поле»).

For it is written in [the] book of Psalms, Let his homestead become desolate, and let there be no dweller in it; and, Let another take his overseership.

Петро сказав: «Адже так сказано в книзі Псалмів про Юду: „Нехай спустошена буде його оселя, і ніхто хай не житиме в ній”. І ще сказано: „Нехай інший візьме на себе його служіння”.

It is necessary therefore, that of the men who have assembled with us all [the] time in which the Lord Jesus came in and went out among us,

21-22 Отже, необхідно обрати одного з тих, хто був серед нас весь той час, коли Господь Ісус був з нами — від Іоанового хрещення й до часу, коли Ісус був вознесений на Небеса. Цей обраний чоловік мусить стати разом з нами свідком Ісусового воскресіння».

beginning from the baptism of John until the day in which he was taken up from us, one of these should be a witness with us of his resurrection.

And they appointed two, Joseph, who was called Barsabas, who had been surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

Запропоновано було двох: Йосипа, якого називали Варсавою (він був також відомий під іменем Юст), та Маттія.

And they prayed, and said, Thou Lord, knower of the hearts of all, shew which one of these two thou hast chosen,

24-25 Потім вони почали молитися такими словами: «Господи, Тобі відомі серця всіх людей. Покажи нам, кого з цих двох Ти обрав взяти на апостольську службу, яку Юда залишив, щоб іти туди, куди йому належало».

to receive the lot of this service and apostleship, from which Judas transgressing fell to go to his own place.

And they gave lots on them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

І апостоли кинули жереб між двома, й він упав на Маттія. Тож він долучився до одинадцяти апостолів.
