Это слова Учителя, сына Давида, царя Иерусалима.

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

Во всём бессмысленность. Учитель говорит, что всё есть пустая трата времени.

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities! all is vanity.

Что получают люди от своих тяжких трудов на протяжении жизни? Ничего.

What profit hath man of all his labour wherewith he laboureth under the sun?

Люди живут и умирают, но земля остаётся навеки.

[One] generation passeth away, and [another] generation cometh, but the earth standeth for ever.

Солнце восходит и заходит, и снова спешит к месту восхода.

The sun also riseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to its place where it ariseth.

Ветер дует на юг и на север, дует снова и снова, кружась, и возвращается туда, где он зародился.

The wind goeth towards the south, and turneth about towards the north: it turneth about continually, and the wind returneth again to its circuits.

Все реки текут в море, но море не переполняется, и возвращаются реки на одно и то же место.

All the rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full: unto the place whither the rivers go, thither they go again.

Всё настолько утомительно, что трудно даже это описать словами, но люди по-прежнему продолжают говорить. Слова вновь достигают наш слух, но не насыщают его, как и глаза не насыщаются тем, что видят.

All things are full of toil; none can express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

Как было всё, так всё и будет продолжатся. Всё будет сделано, что уже было сделано, ведь в этой жизни нового ничего нет.

That which hath been is that which shall be; and that which hath been done is that which will be done: and there is nothing new under the sun.

«Посмотри — это новое», — мог бы сказать человек, но это уже было когда-то, это уже было здесь ещё до того, как мы появились.

Is there a thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? It hath been already in the ages which were before us.

Того, что было давно, люди не помнят, а то, что сейчас происходит, люди в будущем помнить не будут, и позднее другие люди не будут помнить того, что сделано было до них. Приносит ли мудрость счастье?

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be remembrance of things that are to come with those who shall live afterwards.

Я, Учитель, был царём Израиля в Иерусалиме.

I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

Я решил посвятить себя поискам и изучению всего того, что делается в жизни, и понял, как тяжко то, что Господь определил нам сделать.

And I applied my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under the heavens: this grievous occupation hath God given to the children of men to weary themselves therewith.

Я взглянул на всё, творящееся на земле, и увидел, что всё это потеря времени, сравнимая с тщетными попытками поймать ветер.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and pursuit of the wind.

Если что-то криво, ты не можешь выпрямить этого, и, если что-то утрачено, ты не можешь сказать, что оно здесь.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight; and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

Я сказал себе: «Стал я очень мудрым, превзошёл мудростью всех царей, правивших до меня Иерусалимом, и мне известно, что такое в действительности мудрость и знание».

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I have become great and have acquired wisdom more than all they that have been before me over Jerusalem; and my heart hath seen much of wisdom and knowledge.

Я посвятил свой разум познанию того, в какой степени мудрость превосходит глупость, и понял, что стремиться стать мудрым так же тщетно, как пытаться поймать ветер.

And I applied my heart to the knowledge of wisdom, and to the knowledge of madness and folly: I perceived that this also is a striving after the wind.

С большою мудростью приходит разочарование, и кто увеличивает мудрость, тот увеличивает скорбь. Приносят ли радость развлечения?

For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
