Вот какие слова сказал Моисей израильтянам, когда они находились в долине реки Иордан, в пустыне к востоку от реки Иордан, против Суфа, между пустыней Фаран и городами Тофелом, Лаваном, Асирофом и Дизагавом.

These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the plain, opposite to Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

Путь из Хорива через горы Сеира в Кадес-Варну занимает всего одиннадцать дней,

There are eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.

но с того времени, как израильский народ покинул Египет, и до того как израильтяне пришли на то место, прошло сорок лет. В первый день одиннадцатого месяца сорокового года Моисей говорил с народом и передал ему всё, что повелел Господь.

And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel, according to all that Jehovah had given him in command to them;

Это произошло после победы Господа над Сигоном, царём аморрейским, который жил в Есевоне, и Огом, царём васанским, жившим в Аштарофе и Едреи.

after he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, who dwelt at Ashtaroth [and] at Edrei.

Израильский народ находился на восточном берегу реки Иордан в Моаве, когда Моисей начал объяснять, что повелел Господь:

On this side the Jordan, in the land of Moab, began Moses to unfold this law, saying,

«Господь, Бог наш, говорил с нами на горе Хорив и сказал: „Вы долго оставались на той горе,

Jehovah our God spoke unto us in Horeb, saying, Ye have stayed long enough in this mountain.

так отправляйтесь же в горы, где живут аморреи, и по всей округе, идите в долину Иордана, в горы, на западные склоны, в Негев и на морское побережье. Пройдите через Ханаанскую землю и через Ливан до самой великой реки Евфрат.

Turn and take your journey, and go to the hill-country of the Amorites, and unto all the neighbouring places in the plain, in the mountain, and in the lowland, and in the south, and by the seaside, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.

Я отдаю вам эту землю, идите и возьмите её. Я обещал дать эту землю вашим предкам, Аврааму, Исааку и Иакову, обещал отдать эту землю им и их потомкам”».

Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Jehovah swore unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

Моисей сказал: «Я и тогда сказал вам, что не смогу один быть вашим предводителем,

And I spoke unto you at that time, saying, I am not able to bear you myself alone.

теперь же вас ещё больше! Господь, Бог ваш, умножил ваше число, и сегодня вас столько, сколько звёзд на небе!

Jehovah your God hath multiplied you, and behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

Пусть Господь, Бог предков ваших, умножит вас тысячекратно по сравнению с тем, сколько вас сейчас! Да благословит Он вас, как обещал!

Jehovah, the God of your fathers, make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you as he hath said unto you!

Я же один не могу печься о вас и разрешать все ваши споры!

How can I myself alone sustain your wear, and your burden, and your strife?

Изберите себе несколько человек из каждого колена, и я сделаю их вашими предводителями. Изберите тех, у кого есть опыт, мудрость и понимание людей.

Provide you wise and understanding and known men, according to your tribes, that I may make them your chiefs.

Вы же ответили: „Так и сделаем!”

And ye answered me, and said, The thing that thou hast spoken is good [for us] to do.

И тогда я взял мудрых и опытных людей, избранных вами из каждого колена, и сделал их вашими предводителями. Так я установил над вами тысячников, сотников, пятидесятников, десятников и также дал надзирателей каждому из ваших колен.

So I took the chiefs of your tribes, wise men and known, and made them chiefs over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers for your tribes.

Тогда я сказал судьям: „Выслушивайте споры братьев и судите справедливо, спорят ли между собой двое израильтян или израильтянин и чужестранец.

And I commanded your judges at that time, saying, Hear [the causes] between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother, and him also that sojourneth with him.

Не считайте, что один человек важнее другого, выслушивайте и малого, и великого. Никого не бойтесь, потому что суд — дело Божье; а если дело слишком трудно для вас, обратитесь ко мне, и я рассужу”.

Ye shall not respect persons in judgment: ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man, for the judgment is God's; and the matter that is too hard for you shall ye bring to me, that I may hear it.

В то же время я дал вам повеление обо всём, что вам необходимо сделать».

And I commanded you at that time all the things that ye should do.

«И тогда, повинуясь Господу, Богу нашему, мы отправились с горы Хорив в горную страну аморреев, прошли через огромную и страшную пустыню, которую вы видели, и пришли в Кадес-Варну.

And we departed from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw, on the way to the mountain of the Amorites, as Jehovah our God had commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.

Я вам сказал: „Вы пришли в горную страну аморреев, которую Господь, Бог наш, даёт нам.

And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the Amorites, which Jehovah our God giveth us.

Смотрите же, вот она! Поднимитесь и возьмите эту землю в своё владение! Господь, Бог ваших предков, повелел вам сделать это! Не бойтесь и ни о чём не беспокойтесь!”

Behold, Jehovah thy God hath set the land before thee: go up, take possession, as Jehovah the God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.

Тогда вы пришли ко мне и сказали: „Давай сначала пошлём несколько человек, чтобы они осмотрели эту землю. Пусть разведают, в чём её сила и в чём слабость, а потом пусть возвратятся и скажут, какой дорогой нам идти и в какие города”.

And ye came near to me all of you, and said, We will send men before us, who shall examine the land for us, and bring us word again of the way by which we must go up, and of the cities to which we shall come.

Эта мысль мне пришлась по душе, и я выбрал из вашего числа двенадцать человек, по одному от каждого колена.

And the matter was good in mine eyes; and I took twelve men of you, one man for a tribe.

Они ушли и, поднявшись в горы, пришли в долину Эшкол и осмотрели её.

And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came to the valley of Eshcol, and searched it out.

Набрав плодов этой земли, они принесли их и рассказали нам об этой земле. „Господь, Бог наш, даёт нам хорошую землю”, — сказали они.

And they took of the fruit of the land in their hand, and brought it down unto us, and brought us answer, and said, The land is good that Jehovah our God hath given us.

Вы же отказались идти в ту землю, отказались повиноваться Господу, Богу вашему,

But ye would not go up, and rebelled against the word of Jehovah your God;

разошлись по своим шатрам и стали жаловаться: „Господь, из ненависти к нам, вывел нас из Египетской страны только для того, чтобы нас истребили аморреи!

and ye murmured in your tents, and said, Because Jehovah hated us, he hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.

Куда же нам теперь идти? Наши братья испугали нас своими рассказами. Народ там крупнее и выше нас! — восклицали они. — Города большие, и стены их до самого неба! И мы видели там исполинов!”

Whither shall we go up? Our brethren have made our hearts melt, saying, [They are] a people greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.

Я сказал вам: „Не страшитесь и не бойтесь этого народа!

And I said unto you, Be not afraid, neither fear them;

Господь, Бог ваш, пойдёт впереди вас и будет сражаться за вас, как сделал это в Египте. Вы видели, что Он шёл впереди вас там

Jehovah your God who goeth before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes;

и в пустыне, видели, что Господь Бог нёс вас, как отец несёт сына, и привёл вас невредимыми к этому месту”.

and in the wilderness where thou hast seen that Jehovah thy God bore thee, as a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came to this place.

И всё-таки вы не верили Господу, Богу вашему!

But In this thing ye did not believe Jehovah your God,

Во время ваших скитаний Он шёл впереди вас и находил вам место, где поставить стан, шёл впереди вас ночью в огне, а днём — в облаке, указывая вам путь».

who went in the way before you, to search you out a place for your encamping, in fire by night, to shew you by what way ye should go, and in the cloud by day.

«Господь услышал ваши речи, разгневался и поклялся, сказав:

And Jehovah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and swore, saying,

„Вы — народ, полный зла, и потому никто из вас не увидит доброй земли, обещанной Мной вашим предкам,

None among these men, this evil generation, shall in any wise see that good land, which I swore to give unto your fathers!

только Халев, сын Иефоннии, увидит её. Я дам Халеву и его потомкам землю, по которой он прошёл, потому что Халев исполнил всё, что Я повелел”.

Except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children, because he hath wholly followed Jehovah.

Из-за вас Господь разгневался и на меня и сказал: „Моисей, и ты тоже не вступишь на эту землю,

Also Jehovah was angry with me on your account, saying, Thou also shalt not go in thither.

Иисус, сын Навина, твой помощник, вступит на эту землю. Ободряй Иисуса, потому что он поведёт за собой израильтян, чтобы они владели этой землёй”.

Joshua the son of Nun, who standeth before thee, he shall go in thither: strengthen him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.

Затем Господь обратился к нам с такими словами: „Вы сказали, что враг захватит ваших детей, но эти дети вступят на ту землю. Они ещё слишком молоды, чтобы отличить добро от зла, и потому Я отдам им эту землю, и ваши дети овладеют ею.

And your little ones, of whom ye said, They shall be a prey, and your children, who this day know neither good nor evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

А вы поверните и отправляйтесь обратно в пустыню по дороге, ведущей к Красному морю”.

But ye, turn, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea.

„Моисей, — признались вы тогда, — мы согрешили против Господа, но теперь мы пойдём и сразимся, как повелел нам Господь, Бог наш”. И каждый из вас взял своё оружие, думая, что вам будет легко захватить эту горную страну.

And ye answered And said unto me, We have sinned against Jehovah, We will go up And fight, according to all that Jehovah our God hath commanded us. And ye girded on Every man his weapons of war, And ye would go presumptuously up the hill.

Господь же повелел мне: „Скажи людям, чтобы они не ходили в ту землю и ни с кем не сражались, потому что Меня не будет с ними и враги одолеют их”.

And Jehovah said to me, Say unto them, Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies.

Я говорил с вами, но вы не слушали и отказывались повиноваться Господу, считая, что можете полагаться на свои силы. Вы поднялись в горы,

And I spoke unto you, but ye would not hear, and ye rebelled against the word of Jehovah, and acted presumptuously, and went up the hill.

но живущие там аморреи вышли сразиться с вами и преследовали вас словно пчелиный рой от Сеира до самой Хормы.

And the Amorite that dwelt on that hill came out against you, and chased you, like as bees do, and cut you in pieces in Seir, as far as Hormah.

Тогда вы пришли назад и воззвали к Господу о помощи, но Господь отказался слушать вас,

And ye returned and wept before Jehovah, but Jehovah would not listen to your voice, nor give ear unto you.

и вы остались в Кадесе на долгое время».

And ye abode in Kadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode [there].
