Разгромив амаликитян, Давид вернулся в Секелаг и пробыл там два дня. Это случилось вскоре после того, как был убит Саул.

Now it came to pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Amalekites, and David had abode two days in Ziklag;

На третий день из лагеря Саула пришёл молодой солдат. Одежда на нём была разорвана, а голова посыпана пылью в знак глубокой скорби. Придя к Давиду, он поклонился ему до самой земли.

It came even to pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did obeisance.

Давид спросил его: «Откуда ты пришёл?» Человек ответил: «Я убежал из израильского лагеря».

And David said unto him, From whence comest thou? And he said unto him, Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped.

Давид спросил: «Что там произошло? Расскажи мне». Тогда человек ответил: «Народ наш бежал с поля сражения. Многие убиты, и Саул и сын его Ионафан тоже мертвы».

And David said unto him, How went the matter? I pray thee, tell me. And he answered, That the people are fled from the battle, and many of the people also are fallen and dead; and Saul and Jonathan his son are dead also.

Давид спросил юношу, который рассказывал ему об этом: «Откуда ты знаешь, что Саул и его сын Ионафан мертвы?»

And David said unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his son be dead?

И юноша ответил: «Я случайно оказался на Гелвуйской горе и увидел Саула, опирающегося на своё копьё, а колесница и всадники настигали его.

And the young man that told him said, As I happened by chance upon mount Gilboa, behold, Saul leaned upon his spear; and, lo, the chariots and horsemen followed hard after him.

Он оглянулся назад и, увидев меня, позвал, а я ответил ему.

And when he looked behind him, he saw me, and called unto me. And I answered, Here am I.

Саул спросил: „Кто ты?” И я ответил ему, что я — амаликитянин.

And he said unto me, Who art thou? And I answered him, I am an Amalekite.

Тогда Саул сказал мне: „Подойди и убей меня! Я в смертельных муках, но всё ещё жив”.

He said unto me again, Stand, I pray thee, upon me, and slay me: for anguish is come upon me, because my life is yet whole in me.

Поэтому я подошёл и убил его, так как знал, что он тяжело ранен и не сможет выжить. Затем я взял корону с его головы и браслет и принёс их сюда, мой господин».

So I stood upon him, and slew him, because I was sure that he could not live after that he was fallen: and I took the crown that was upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

Тогда Давид и все люди, бывшие с ним, разорвали на себе одежды, чтобы выразить свою печаль.

Then David took hold on his clothes, and rent them; and likewise all the men that were with him:

Они рыдали, плакали и постились до захода солнца о Сауле и о сыне его Ионафане, о народе Господнем и об Израиле, так как пали они от меча.

And they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

Затем Давид сказал юноше, который рассказал ему о смерти Саула: «Откуда ты?» Юноша ответил: «Я амаликитянин, сын чужеземца».

And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

Тогда Давид сказал ему: «Как не побоялся ты поднять руку, чтобы убить помазанника Господа?»

And David said unto him, How wast thou not afraid to stretch forth thine hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?

Затем Давид призвал одного из молодых слуг и приказал ему убить амаликитянина,

And David called one of the young men, and said, Go near, and fall upon him. And he smote him that he died.

и тот убил его. И сказал Давид амаликитянину: «Ты сам виноват в своей смерти. Ты сказал, что убил помазанника Господа, так что твои собственные слова доказывают твою вину».

And David said unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head; for thy mouth hath testified against thee, saying, I have slain the LORD'S anointed.

Давид пел печальную песнь о Сауле и его сыне Ионафане.

And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:

Он велел своим людям научить народ Иудеи этой песне, которая называется «Поклон». Она записана в книге «Ясара».

(Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

«Краса твоя, Израиль, повержена на высотах твоих! О, как пали эти герои!

The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!

Не рассказывайте об этом в Гефе, не объявляйте на улицах Аскалона. Чтоб не радовались города филистимские, чтоб не торжествовали народы чужеземные.

Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.

О, горы Гелвуйские! Пусть не падает на вас ни роса, ни дождь, и не будет полей, приносящих урожай. Так как щит героев заржавел там, не был помазан маслом щит Саула.

Ye mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew, neither let there be rain, upon you, nor fields of offerings: for there the shield of the mighty is vilely cast away, the shield of Saul, as though he had not been anointed with oil.

Лук Ионафана отнял жизни многих, меч Саула принёс смерть врагу! Они пролили кровь тех, кто мёртв сейчас, пронзили плоть могучих воинов.

From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.

Саул и Ионафан нам были дороги! В жизни своей они друг друга любили и в согласии были. И даже смерть не разлучила их! Быстрее орлов, сильнее львов они были.

Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

О, дочери Израиля, плачьте о Сауле, который одевал вас в пурпурные одежды и золотом одежду вашу украшал.

Ye daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you in scarlet, with other delights, who put on ornaments of gold upon your apparel.

Как пали сильные в битве! Ионафан лежит убитый на высотах Гелвуйских.

How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

Скорблю я о тебе, брат мой Ионафан! Ты очень дорог был мне. Меня любил ты неописуемой любовью, которая сильнее любви женщины.

I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

В битве погибли славные герои, их оружие утеряно бесследно».

How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!
