Очутившись на берегу в безопасности, мы узнали, что остров называется Мальта.

And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.

Местные жители проявили к нам необычайную доброту. Когда похолодало и пошёл дождь, они разложили костёр и пригласили нас к огню.

And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.

Павел набрал охапку хвороста, и, когда он бросал его в огонь, выползла змея, спасаясь от жара, и впилась ему в руку.

And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

Увидев висящую на его руке змею, местные жители сказали друг другу: «Этот человек, несомненно, убийца, потому что, хотя он и не погиб в море, Справедливость не позволила ему остаться в живых».

And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.

Но Павел стряхнул змею в огонь и не почувствовал никакой боли.

And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.

Местные жители же ожидали, что у него появится опухоль или что он тут же замертво упадёт. Они долго ждали и наблюдали за Павлом, но с ним ничего не произошло. Тогда, изменив своё мнение, люди стали говорить, что он — бог.

Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

Неподалёку от того места были владения наместника острова Публия. Он пригласил нас к себе в дом и три дня был нашим гостеприимным хозяином.

In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.

Отец Публия лежал в постели, так как он страдал от лихорадки и дизентерии. Павел пошёл навестить его и, помолившись, возложил на него руки и исцелил его.

And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.

Когда это случилось, к Павлу пришли и другие больные, жившие на острове, и он их исцелил.

So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:

Жители острова оказали нам множество почестей, и мы пробыли там три месяца. Когда же мы приготовились к отплытию, они снабдили нас всем необходимым.

Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.

Через три месяца мы отплыли на зимовавшем на острове александрийском корабле, на корме которого были изображены Диоскуры.

And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.

Прибыв в Сиракузы, мы остановились там на три дня.

And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days.

Отплыв оттуда, мы прибыли в Ригию. Через день подул южный ветер, и на второй день мы прибыли в Путеолы.

And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

Там мы нашли братьев, которые попросили пробыть с ними неделю, а затем мы прибыли в Рим.

Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.

В Риме братья и сёстры услышали о нас и вышли нам навстречу к Аппиевой Площади и к Трём Гостиницам. Увидев их, Павел возблагодарил Бога и ободрился.

And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.

По прибытии в Рим Павлу было позволено жить отдельно, но под охраной воина.

And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.

Через три дня Павел созвал самых влиятельных людей среди иудеев. Когда они собрались, Павел сказал им: «Братья! Хотя я и не совершил ничего против нашего народа или против обычаев наших предков, я был передан римлянам как узник в Иерусалиме.

And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

Они допросили меня и, так как я не был виноват ни в чём, заслуживающем смерти, хотели освободить меня.

Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me.

Иудеи же воспротивились этому, и тогда мне пришлось потребовать суда цезаря. Однако я ни в чём не обвиняю мой народ.

But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.

Именно поэтому я и просил о встрече и беседе с вами. Я скован цепями только за то, что верую в надежду Израиля».

For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.

Тогда иудеи сказали Павлу: «Мы не получили о тебе никаких писем из Иудеи, и ни один из братьев, придя оттуда, не известил нас и не сказал ничего плохого о тебе.

And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judaea concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.

Но нам бы хотелось услышать от тебя о твоих взглядах, так как нам известно, что люди повсюду выступают против этой секты».

But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.

Иудеи условились с Павлом о дне, и ещё большее число иудеев пришло к нему туда, где он остановился. С утра до вечера он разъяснял им и свидетельствовал перед ними о Царстве Божьем, пытаясь убедить их на основании Закона Моисея и книг пророков в том, что всё, сказанное об Иисусе, — правда.

And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening.

Одних он убедил своими словами, но другие так и не поверили.

And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.

Между иудеями разгорелся спор и, не достигнув согласия, они уже собрались расходиться, когда Павел сказал: «Истину сказал Святой Дух, говоря с вашими отцами через пророка Исаию:

And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

„Иди к народу этому и скажи: „Вы будете слушать и слышать, но ничего не поймёте, вы будете смотреть и видеть, но ничего не увидите,

Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:

потому что притупились умы народа этого, и едва слышат они ушами, и закрыли они глаза. И случилось это, чтобы они не увидели глазами, не услышали ушами, не поняли умом и не обратились ко Мне за исцелением”.

For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

Да будет это известно вам, иудеи, что Бог послал Своё спасение язычникам, и они будут слушать!»

Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

[После того как Павел произнёс эти слова, иудеи ушли, ожесточённо споря между собой].

And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.

Целых два года Павел прожил в доме, за который платил сам, и принимал всех, кто приходил к нему.

And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,

Он провозглашал Царство Божье и проповедовал учение о Господе Иисусе Христе смело и беспрепятственно.

Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
