Однажды жил человек по имени Иов в стране Уц. Он был хорошим и верующим человеком, он поклонялся Богу и сторонился зла.

There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God and [a]shunned evil.

У Иова было семь сыновей и три дочери.

And seven sons and three daughters were born to him.

Во владении у него было семь тысяч овец, три тысячи верблюдов, тысяча быков и пятьсот ослиц. У Иова было множество слуг, и он считался самым богатым человеком на востоке.

Also, his possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very large household, so that this man was the greatest of all the [b]people of the East.

Сыновья Иова по очереди устраивали пиры в своих домах и приглашали своих сестёр.

And his sons would go and feast in their houses, each on his appointed day, and would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

Иов просыпался рано утром после таких пиров и приносил жертвы всесожжения за каждого из своих детей. Он думал: «Может быть, дети были беззаботными и согрешили против Бога во время своего пира». Иов делал это каждый раз, чтобы дети были прощены за свои грехи, если согрешили.

So it was, when the days of feasting had run their course, that Job would send and [c]sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed[d] God in their hearts.” Thus Job did regularly.

Пришёл день для Ангелов предстать перед Господом, и сатана пришёл вместе с ними.

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and [e]Satan also came among them.

Господь спросил сатану: «Где ты был?» «Я бродил по земле», — ответил сатана.

And the Lord said to [f]Satan, “From where do you come?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.”

Тогда Господь спросил: «Видел ли ты моего слугу Иова? Никто на земле не сравнится с ним! Он действительно хороший человек, который поклоняется Богу и сторонится зла!»

Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you [g]considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and [h]shuns evil?”

Тогда сатана воскликнул: «Конечно, Иов поклоняется Богу, потому что у него есть на то причины.

So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing?

Ты всегда охраняешь и его, и его семью, и всё, чем он владеет. Ты помогаешь ему во всех его делах. Ты благословил его, и он стал так богат, что повсюду можно видеть его стада.

Have You not [i]made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.

Но если Ты заберёшь всё, что у него есть, то он будет проклинать Тебя в лицо».

But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse[j] You to Your face!”

«Что ж, — сказал Господь, — делай что хочешь с его владениями, но не трогай его самого». После этих слов сатана ушёл от Господа.

And the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your [k]power; only do not lay a hand on his person.” So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

Однажды, когда дети Иова ели и пили вино в доме старшего брата,

Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house;

к Иову пришёл человек и сказал: «В то время, когда быки распахивали землю, а ослицы паслись рядом,

and a messenger came to Job and said, “The oxen were plowing and the donkeys feeding beside them,

на нас напали савеяне и увели всех твоих животных, и убили всех слуг. Я один уцелел, чтобы рассказать обо всём».

when the [l]Sabeans [m]raided them and took them away — indeed they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Пока первый вестник ещё говорил, пришёл другой и сказал: «Молния ударила с неба и сожгла овец и слуг твоих. Я один уцелел, чтобы рассказать тебе обо всём».

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and [n]consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

И пока второй вестник всё ещё говорил, третий предстал перед Иовом и сказал: «Халдеи напали на нас с трёх сторон и забрали верблюдов, убив всех твоих слуг. Я один уцелел, чтобы рассказать тебе обо всём».

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “The Chaldeans formed three bands, raided the camels and took them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Третий гонец ещё не закончил своей речи, как появился другой и произнёс: «Твои сыновья и дочери ели и пили вино в доме старшего брата.

While he was still speaking, another also came and said, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother’s house,

Вдруг сильный ураган из пустыни пришёл и разрушил этот дом, похоронив твоих детей под обломками. Я один уцелел, чтобы рассказать тебе обо всём».

and suddenly a great wind came from [o]across the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you!”

Услышав всё это, Иов, потрясённый горем, разорвал на себе одежду и обрил свою голову. Затем он упал на землю и стал молиться Богу:

Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.

«Когда я родился на свет, был я гол и ничего не имел. Когда я уйду из жизни этой, снова буду гол, ничего не имея. Господь нам даёт, Господь и забирает. Славьте же имя Его!»

And he said: “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, And naked shall I return there. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; Blessed be the name of the Lord.”

Даже после этих несчастий Иов не согрешил и не обвинил Господа в том, что случилось.

In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.
