James, a servanta of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings.

Jakobus, ein Knecht GOttes und des HErrn JEsu Christi, den zwölf Geschlechtern, die da sind hin und her: Freude zuvor!

Count it all joy, my brothers,b when you meet trials of various kinds,

Meine lieben Brüder, achtet es eitel Freude, wenn ihr in mancherlei Anfechtung fallet,

for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

und wisset, daß euer Glaube, so er rechtschaffen ist, Geduld wirket.

And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Die Geduld aber soll festbleiben bis ans Ende, auf daß ihr seid vollkommen und ganz und keinen Mangel habet.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

So aber jemand unter euch Weisheit mangelt, der bitte von GOtt, der da gibt einfältiglich jedermann und rücket es niemand auf; so wird sie ihm gegeben werden.

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

Er bitte aber im Glauben und zweifle nicht; denn wer da zweifelt, der ist gleich wie die Meereswoge, die vom Winde getrieben und gewebet wird.

For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;

Solcher Mensch denke nicht, daß er etwas von dem HErrn empfangen werde.

he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.

Ein Zweifler ist unbeständig in allen seinen Wegen.

Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation,

Ein Bruder aber, der niedrig ist, rühme sich seiner Höhe,

and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grassc he will pass away.

und der da reich ist, rühme sich seiner Niedrigkeit; denn wie eine Blume des Grases wird er vergehen.

For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

Die Sonne gehet auf mit der Hitze, und das Gras verwelket, und die Blume fällt ab und seine schöne Gestalt verdirbet; also wird der Reiche in seiner Habe verwelken.

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Selig ist der Mann, der die Anfechtung erduldet; denn nachdem er bewähret ist, wird er die Krone des Lebens empfangen, welche GOtt verheißen hat denen, die ihn liebhaben.

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.

Niemand sage, wenn er versuchet wird, daß er von GOtt versucht werde; denn GOtt ist nicht ein Versucher zum Bösen; er versuchet niemand;

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

sondern ein jeglicher wird versucht, wenn er von seiner eigenen Lust gereizet und gelocket wird.

Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Danach, wenn die Lust empfangen hat, gebieret sie die Sünde; die Sünde aber, wenn sie vollendet ist, gebieret sie den Tod.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.

Irret nicht, liebe Brüder!

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.d

Alle gute Gabe und alle vollkommene Gabe kommt von oben herab, von dem Vater des Lichts, bei welchem ist keine Veränderung noch Wechsel des Lichts und Finsternis.

Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Er hat uns gezeuget nach seinem Willen durch das Wort der Wahrheit, auf daß wir wären Erstlinge seiner Kreaturen.

Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;

Darum, liebe Brüder, ein jeglicher Mensch sei schnell zu hören, langsam aber zu reden und langsam zum Zorn;

for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.

denn des Menschen Zorn tut nicht, was vor GOtt recht ist.

Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

Darum so leget ab alle Unsauberkeit und alle Bosheit und nehmet das Wort an mit Sanftmut, das in euch gepflanzet ist, welches kann eure Seelen selig machen.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Seid aber Täter des Worts und nicht Hörer allein, damit ihr euch selbst betrüget.

For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.

Denn so jemand ist ein Hörer des Worts und nicht ein Täter, der ist gleich einem Mann, der sein leiblich Angesicht im Spiegel beschauet;

For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like.

denn nachdem er sich beschauet hat, gehet er von Stund' an davon und vergisset, wie er gestaltet war.

But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.

Wer aber durchschauet in das voll kommene Gesetz der Freiheit und darinnen beharret und ist nicht ein vergeßlicher Hörer, sondern ein Täter, derselbige wird selig sein in seiner Tat.

If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.

So aber sich jemand unter euch lässet dünken, er diene GOtt, und hält seine Zunge nicht im Zaum, sondern verführet sein Herz, des Gottesdienst ist eitel.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Ein reiner und unbefleckter Gottesdienst vor GOtt dem Vater ist der: die Waisen und Witwen in ihrer Trübsal besuchen und sich von der Welt unbefleckt behalten.
