Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

Видя, что многие уже принялись описывать события, которые произошли у нас

Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

и о которых мы узнали от тех, что были с самого начала их очевидцами и затем стали служителями слова,1

It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

решил и я, тщательно изучив всё, как оно происходило,2 описать это по порядку для тебя, досточтимый Феофил,

That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

чтобы ты лучше узнал, насколько достоверно всё то, в чем ты был наставлен.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

Во времена Ирода, царя Иудеи, был некий священник по имени Захария; он нес свое служение в Авиевой смене недельных служб. Его жена, которую звали Елизавета, также происходила из священнического рода.3

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

Оба они были праведными в глазах Божиих, живя безупречно по всем заповедям и установлениям Господним.

And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

Но у них не было детей: Елизавета была бесплодной, и уже достигли они преклонного возраста.

And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

Однажды, когда Захария в порядке очередности совершал свое священническое служение перед Богом,

According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

ему, как было принято среди священников, выпало по жребию войти в Святилище Господне и курить благовония,

And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

а весь народ во время курения благовоний молился вне Храма.

And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

И явился Захарии ангел Господень, он стоял по правую сторону жертвенника, на котором курились благовония.

And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

Растерялся и смутился Захария, увидев ангела, и охватил его страх.

But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

Ангел же сказал ему: «Не бойся, Захария: твоя молитва услышана! Жена твоя Елизавета родит тебе сына, и ты назовешь его Иоанном.

And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

И будешь ты радоваться и ликовать, и многие будут рады его рождению.

For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

Ибо он будет велик в глазах Господа, не будет пить ни вина, ни крепких напитков и преисполнится Духом Святым еще до рождения своего,4

And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

и обратит5 многих из сыновей Израиля к Господу, Богу их.

And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

Это он, исполненный духом и силой Илии, будет идти впереди Господа, чтобы примирить отцов с детьми6 своими, а непокорных привести к образу мыслей праведных, приготовить народ, который был бы угоден Господу».7

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

Захария же сказал ангелу: «Как мне узнать, что это сбудется? Ведь я стар и жена моя уже в годах».

And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

«Я — Гавриил, стоящий в присутствии Бога,8 — ответил ему ангел, — и послан говорить с тобой и принести тебе эту радостную весть.

And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

Но вот за то, что ты не поверил моим словам, которые исполнятся в свое время, ты будешь молчать и не сможешь говорить до того дня, пока не сбудется это».

And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

Народ же тем временем ждал Захарию и недоумевал, почему он так долго задерживается в Святилище.

And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

Когда наконец он вышел, то говорить ни с кем не мог. И люди поняли, что в Святилище было ему видение. Он же объяснялся с ними одними жестами, оставаясь немым.

And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

И как только подошли к концу дни его служения в Храме, он вернулся к себе домой.

And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

[24-25] Вскоре после этого жена его, Елизавета, зачала и первые пять месяцев провела в полном уединении. «Господь это сделал для меня, — говорила она, — Он позаботился9 о том, чтобы снять с меня позор перед людьми».

Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

На шестой месяц после видения Захарии ангел Гавриил был послан Богом в галилейский город Назарет

To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

к деве, обрученной с человеком по имени Иосиф из рода Давидова.10 Звали эту деву Мария.11

And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

И, войдя к ней, Гавриил сказал: «Радуйся!12 С тобой Господь, ты удостоилась Его особой милости!»

And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

Эти слова очень смутили ее, и она старалась понять, что могло бы означать такое приветствие.

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

Тогда ангел сказал ей: «Не бойся, Мария! Ты обрела особую милость13 у Бога.

And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

И ты зачнешь, и родишь Сына, и дашь Ему имя Иисус.14

He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

Он будет велик, и назовут Его Сыном Всевышнего; Господь Бог даст Ему престол Давида, праотца Его.

And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Он будет царствовать над потомками Иакова15 вечно, и Царству Его не будет конца».

Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

«Как же это возможно, если я еще не замужем?» — спросила Мария у ангела.

And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

«Дух Святой снизойдет на тебя, — ответил ей ангел, — и сила Всевышнего тебя осенит,16 а потому и Святое Дитя, рожденное тобою, будет названо Сыном Божьим.

And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

Знай, что и Елизавета, родственница твоя, несмотря на свою старость, также ждет сына: она уже на шестом месяце, хотя ее и называли бесплодной.

For with God nothing shall be impossible.

Ибо для Бога нет ничего невозможного».17

And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

«Ты видишь, — сказала Мария, — я готова служить Господу;18 пусть будет так, как ты сказал». И ангел оставил ее.

And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Вскоре после этого Мария собралась и спешно отправилась в город, расположенный в нагорье Иудеи.

And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

Она вошла в дом Захарии и приветствовала Елизавету.

And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

И как только Елизавета услышала приветствие Марии, ребенок во чреве ее встрепенулся. Исполнилась тогда Елизавета Духом Святым

And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

и громко воскликнула: «Благословенна ты более всех женщин, и благословен плод чрева твоего!

And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

И откуда мне такое счастье? Ко мне пришла мать Господа моего!

For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

Знай же, в тот миг, когда я услыхала твое приветствие, встрепенулся от радости ребенок во чреве моем.

And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

Как блаженна19 поверившая, что20 исполнится сказанное ей Господом!»

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

Тогда Мария сказала: «Превозносит душа21 моя Господа,

And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

и дух мой ликует и радуется Богу, Спасителю моему,

For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

ибо Он удостоил вниманием рабу Свою, такую ничтожную. И отныне все поколения людей будут называть меня блаженной,

For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

ибо великое совершил для меня Сильный. Свято имя Его,

And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

и милость Его — из рода в род к почитающим22 Его.

He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

Явил Он мощь руки Своей, рассеял возомнивших о себе гордецов,23

He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

свергнул сильных с престолов их и возвысил униженных.

He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

Голодающих Он насытил благами, а богатых отослал ни с чем.

He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

Он пришел на помощь Израилю, слуге Своему, не забыв о милости,24 —

As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

как и обещал праотцам нашим, — о вечной милости к Аврааму25 и потомкам его».

And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

Мария пробыла у Елизаветы около трех месяцев, а затем вернулась домой.

Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

Елизавете же пришло время родить, и родила она сына.

And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

Ее соседи и родственники услышали о том, какую великую милость явил ей Господь, и радовались вместе с нею.

And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

На восьмой день они пришли совершить обрезание ребенку и собирались назвать его по отцу Захарией.

And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

Однако Елизавета возразила: «Нет, назовем его Иоанном».

And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

«Но ведь в твоей родне нет никого с таким именем!» — сказали ей собравшиеся.

And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

И с помощью знаков стали спрашивать у отца, какое имя он хотел бы дать сыну.

And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

Попросив дощечку, Захария, ко всеобщему удивлению, написал: «Имя ему Иоанн».

And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

И тотчас к нему вернулась речь: он заговорил и стал славить Бога.

And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.

Благоговейный трепет охватил тогда всех его соседей, и молва о том, что случилось, распространилась по всей горной Иудее.

And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

И все, кто слышал о происшедшем, хранили это у себя в сердце и спрашивали: «Кем же станет этот ребенок?» — ведь над ним26 явно была рука Господня.

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

Тогда отец Иоанна Захария, исполненный Святого Духа, произнес пророческие слова:

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

«Благословен Господь, Бог Израиля, ибо Он пришел и принес искупление27 народу Своему,

And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

и дал нам могущественного Спасителя28 из дома Давида, слуги Своего.

As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

Так и обещал Он издавна,29 когда говорил устами святых пророков30 Своих,

That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

что спасет нас от врагов наших и от рук всех ненавидящих нас

To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

и что, помня святой Завет31 Свой, явит милость отцам нашим.

The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

[73-74] Клятвенно заверил Он Авраама, праотца нашего, что мы, избавленные от рук врагов своих, сможем безбоязненно служить Ему

That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

в святости и праведности перед лицом Его во все дни жизни нашей.

And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

А ты, дитя, пророком Всевышнего станешь именоваться, ибо будешь идти перед Господом, чтобы проложить путь Ему

To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

и привести народ Его к познанию спасения через прощение грехов народа сего.

Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

По любви и милосердию32 Бога нашего Восходящее Светило посетит33 нас свыше,

To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

чтобы просветить живущих во тьме и тени смертной и направить нас на путь мира».

And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

А ребенок рос и укреплялся духом;34 жил он в пустыне35 до дня явления его народу израильскому.
