Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

Было слово Господне к Ионе, сыну Амиттая:

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

«Отправляйся к Ниневии, великому городу, и призови ее: зло, что творится в ней, переполнило чашу Моего терпения».

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

Но Иона решил бежать и скрыться от Господа в Таршише. Он отправился в Яффу, нашел там корабль, что отправлялся в Таршиш, дал положенную плату и спустился внутрь корабля, чтобы уплыть в Таршиш, прочь от Господа.

But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken.

А Господь наслал на море мощный ветер, началась суровая буря, и корабль вот-вот должен был разбиться.

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

Моряки испугались и стали взывать каждый к своему богу. Они бросали за борт груз в надежде облегчить корабль. Но Иона спустился в трюм, лег и заснул мертвым сном.

So the shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Тогда к нему подошел капитан и сказал:— Что же ты спишь? Вставай, призови своего бога. Может быть, этот бог нас заметит и не даст нам погибнуть.

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

А моряки стали говорить меж собой:— Давайте бросим жребий и узнаем, из-за кого нас постигла такая беда.Бросили жребий, и он пал на Иону.

Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?

Тогда они стали расспрашивать его:— Расскажи нам, из-за кого же нас постигла такая беда: чем ты занимаешься и откуда идешь, из какой ты страны и какого племени?

And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.

Он отвечал:— Я еврей и боюсь Господа, Бога небесного, сотворившего море и сушу.

Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.

Моряки страшно испугались и спросили его:— Что же ты сделал?Они ведь поняли из его рассказа, что он скрывается от Господа,

Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us? for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous.

и сказали:— Как же нам поступить с тобой, чтобы море оставило нас в покое?А море все продолжало бушевать.

And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you: for I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you.

Тогда Иона ответил им:— Возьмите меня и бросьте в море, и оно оставит вас в покое. Ведь я знаю, что эта суровая буря наслана на вас из-за меня.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not: for the sea wrought, and was tempestuous against them.

Но моряки все-таки стали грести, чтобы вновь достичь берега, но никак не могли, потому что буря уносила корабль прочь.

Wherefore they cried unto the LORD, and said, We beseech thee, O LORD, we beseech thee, let us not perish for this man's life, and lay not upon us innocent blood: for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.

И тогда они призвали Господа:— Молим Тебя, ГОСПОДИ, молим, не дай нам погибнуть из-за этого человека, и не взыщи с нас за его невинную кровь, потому что Ты Сам, ГОСПОДИ, сделал то, что пожелал сделать.

So they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her raging.

Моряки взяли Иону и бросили в море, и ярость моря утихла.

Then the men feared the LORD exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice unto the LORD, and made vows.

А сами они страшно испугались Господа, принесли Ему жертву и дали обеты.

Now the LORD had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
