Paulus und Timotheus, Knechte JEsu Christi: Allen Heiligen in Christo JEsu zu Philippi samt den Bischöfen und Dienern.

This letter is from Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus. I am writing to all of God’s holy people in Philippi who belong to Christ Jesus, including the church leadersa and deacons.

Gnade sei mit euch und Friede von GOtt, unserm Vater, und dem HErrn JEsu Christo!

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Ich danke meinem GOtt, so oft ich euer gedenke

Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God.

(welches ich allezeit tue in allem meinem Gebet für euch alle, und tue das Gebet mit Freuden),

Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy,

über eurer Gemeinschaft am Evangelium vom ersten Tage an bis her.

for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.

Und bin desselbigen in guter Zuversicht, daß, der in euch angefangen hat das gute Werk, der wird's auch vollführen bis an den Tag JEsu Christi.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

Wie es denn mir billig ist, daß ich dermaßen von euch allen halte, darum daß ich euch in meinem Herzen habe in diesem meinem Gefängnis, darin ich das Evangelium verantworte und bekräftige, als die ihr alle mit mir der Gnade teilhaftig seid.

So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News.

Denn GOtt ist mein Zeuge, wie mich nach euch allen verlanget von Herzensgrund in JEsu Christo.

God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.

Und darum bete ich, daß eure Liebe je mehr und mehr reich werde in allerlei Erkenntnis und Erfahrung,

I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.

daß ihr prüfen möget, was das Beste sei, auf daß ihr seid lauter und unanstößig bis auf den Tag Christi,

For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.

erfüllet mit Früchten der Gerechtigkeit, die durch JEsum Christum geschehen (in euch) zu Ehre und Lobe GOttes.]

May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation — the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christb — for this will bring much glory and praise to God.

Ich lasse euch aber wissen, liebe Brüder, daß, wie es um mich stehet, das ist nur mehr zur Förderung des Evangeliums geraten,

And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters,c that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News.

also daß meine Bande offenbar worden sind in Christo in dem ganzen Richthause und bei den andern allen,

For everyone here, including the whole palace guard,d knows that I am in chains because of Christ.

und viel Brüder in dem HErrn aus meinen Banden Zuversicht gewonnen, desto türstiger worden sind, das Wort zu reden ohne Scheu.

And because of my imprisonment, most of the believerse here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s messagef without fear.

Etliche zwar predigen Christum auch um Hasses und Haders willen, etliche aber aus guter Meinung.

It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives.

Jene verkündigen Christum aus Zank und nicht lauter; denn sie meinen, sie wollen eine Trübsal zuwenden meinen Banden.

They preach because they love me, for they know I have been appointed to defend the Good News.

Diese aber aus Liebe; denn sie wissen, daß ich zur Verantwortung des Evangeliums hier liege.

Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me.

Was ist ihm aber denn? Daß nur Christus verkündiget werde allerlei Weise, es geschehe Zufalles oder rechter Weise; so freue ich mich doch darinnen und will mich auch freuen.

But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice.

Denn ich weiß, daß mir dasselbige gelinget zur Seligkeit durch euer Gebet und durch Handreichung des Geistes JEsu Christi

For I know that as you pray for me and the Spirit of Jesus Christ helps me, this will lead to my deliverance.

wie ich endlich warte und hoffe, daß ich in keinerlei Stück zuschanden werde, sondern daß mit aller Freudigkeit, gleichwie sonst allezeit, also auch jetzt, Christus hoch gepreiset werde an meinem Leibe, es sei durch Leben oder durch Tod.

For I fully expect and hope that I will never be ashamed, but that I will continue to be bold for Christ, as I have been in the past. And I trust that my life will bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die.

Denn Christus ist mein Leben, und Sterben ist mein Gewinn.

For to me, living means living for Christ, and dying is even better.

Sintemal aber im Fleisch leben dienet, mehr Frucht zu schaffen, so weiß ich nicht, welches ich erwählen soll.

But if I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ. So I really don’t know which is better.

Denn es liegt mir beides hart an: Ich habe Lust abzuscheiden und bei Christo zu sein, welches auch viel besser wäre:

I’m torn between two desires: I long to go and be with Christ, which would be far better for me.

Aber es ist nötiger, im Fleisch bleiben um euretwillen.

But for your sakes, it is better that I continue to live.

Und in guter Zuversicht weiß ich, daß ich bleiben und bei euch allen sein werde euch zur Förderung und zur Freude des Glaubens,

Knowing this, I am convinced that I will remain alive so I can continue to help all of you grow and experience the joy of your faith.

auf daß ihr euch sehr rühmen möget in Christo JEsu an mir durch meine Ankunft wieder zu euch.

And when I come to you again, you will have even more reason to take pride in Christ Jesus because of what he is doing through me.

Wandelt nur würdiglich dem Evangelium Christi, auf daß, ob ich komme und sehe euch oder abwesend von, euch höre, daß ihr stehet in einem Geist und einer Seele und samt uns kämpfet für den Glauben des Evangeliums

Above all, you must live as citizens of heaven, conducting yourselves in a manner worthy of the Good News about Christ. Then, whether I come and see you again or only hear about you, I will know that you are standing together with one spirit and one purpose, fighting together for the faith, which is the Good News.

und euch in keinem Wege erschrecken lasset von den Widersachern, welches ist ein Anzeichen, ihnen der Verdammnis euch aber der Seligkeit, und dasselbige von GOtt.

Don’t be intimidated in any way by your enemies. This will be a sign to them that they are going to be destroyed, but that you are going to be saved, even by God himself.

Denn euch ist gegeben, um Christi willen zu tun, daß ihr nicht allein an ihn glaubet, sondern auch um seinetwillen leidet,

For you have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him.

und habet denselbigen Kampf, welchen ihr an mir gesehen habt und nun von mir höret.

We are in this struggle together. You have seen my struggle in the past, and you know that I am still in the midst of it.
