Paulus, ein Gefangener Christi Jesu, und Timotheus, der Bruder, an Philemon, den Lieben, unsern Mitarbeiter,

Paul, prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timotheus the brother, to Philemon the beloved and our fellow-workman,

und an Aphia, die Schwester, und Archippus, unsern Mitstreiter, und an die Gemeinde in deinem Hause:

and to the sister Apphia and to Archippus our fellow-soldier, and to the assembly which [is] in thine house.

Gnade sei mit euch und Friede von Gott, unserm Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Christus!

Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and [the] Lord Jesus Christ.

Ich danke meinem Gott allezeit, wenn ich deiner gedenke in meinen Gebeten

I thank my God, always making mention of thee at my prayers,

- denn ich höre von der Liebe und dem Glauben, die du hast an den Herrn Jesus und gegenüber allen Heiligen -,

hearing of thy love and the faith which thou hast towards the Lord Jesus, and towards all the saints,

daß der Glaube, den wir miteinander haben, in dir kräftig werde in Erkenntnis all des Guten, das wir haben, in Christus.

in such sort that thy participation in the faith should become operative in the acknowledgment of every good thing which is in us towards Christ [Jesus].

Denn ich hatte große Freude und Trost durch deine Liebe, weil die Herzen der Heiligen erquickt sind durch dich, lieber Bruder.

For we have great thankfulness and encouragement through thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

Darum, obwohl ich in Christus volle Freiheit habe, dir zu gebieten, was sich gebührt,

Wherefore having much boldness in Christ to enjoin thee what is fitting,

will ich um der Liebe willen doch nur bitten, so wie ich bin: Paulus, ein alter Mann, nun aber auch ein Gefangener Christi Jesu.

for love's sake I rather exhort, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also prisoner of Jesus Christ.

So bitte ich dich für meinen Sohn Onesimus, den ich gezeugt habe in der Gefangenschaft,

I exhort thee for my child, whom I have begotten in [my] bonds, Onesimus,

der dir früher unnütz war, jetzt aber dir und mir sehr nützlich ist.

once unserviceable to thee, but now serviceable to thee and to me:

Den sende ich dir wieder zurück und damit mein eigenes Herz.

whom I have sent back to thee: [but do thou receive] him, that is, my bowels:

Ich wollte ihn gern bei mir behalten, damit er mir an deiner Statt diene in der Gefangenschaft, um des Evangeliums willen.

whom I was desirous of keeping with myself, that for thee he might minister to me in the bonds of the glad tidings;

Aber ohne deinen Willen wollte ich nichts tun, damit das Gute dir nicht abgenötigt wäre, sondern freiwillig geschehe.

but I have wished to do nothing without thy mind, that thy good might not be as of necessity but of willingness:

Denn vielleicht war er darum eine Zeitlang von dir getrennt, damit du ihn auf ewig wieder hättest,

for perhaps for this reason he has been separated [from thee] for a time, that thou mightest possess him fully for ever;

nun nicht mehr als einen Sklaven, sondern als einen, der mehr ist als ein Sklave: ein geliebter Bruder, besonders für mich, wieviel mehr aber für dich, sowohl im leiblichen Leben wie auch in dem Herrn.

not any longer as a bondman, but above a bondman, a beloved brother, specially to me, and how much rather to thee, both in [the] flesh and in [the] Lord?

Wenn du mich nun für deinen Freund hältst, so nimm ihn auf wie mich selbst.

If therefore thou holdest me to be a partner [with thee], receive him as me;

Wenn er aber dir Schaden angetan hat oder etwas schuldig ist, das rechne mir an.

but if he have wronged thee anything or owe anything [to thee], put this to my account.

Ich, Paulus, schreibe es mit eigener Hand: Ich will's bezahlen; ich schweige davon, daß du dich selbst mir schuldig bist.

I Paul have written [it] with mine own hand; I will repay [it]: that I say not to thee that thou owest even thine own self also to me.

Ja, lieber Bruder, gönne mir, daß ich mich an dir erfreue in dem Herrn; erquicke mein Herz in Christus.

Yea, brother, I would have profit of thee in [the] Lord: refresh my bowels in Christ.

Im Vertrauen auf deinen Gehorsam schreibe ich dir; denn ich weiß, du wirst mehr tun, als ich sage.

Being confident of thine obedience, I have written to thee, knowing that thou wilt do even more than I say.

Zugleich bereite mir die Herberge; denn ich hoffe, daß ich durch eure Gebete euch geschenkt werde.

But withal prepare me also a lodging; for I hope that I shall be granted to you through your prayers.

Es grüßt dich Epaphras, mein Mitgefangener in Christus Jesus,

Epaphras salutes thee, my fellow-prisoner in Christ Jesus;

Markus, Aristarch, Demas, Lukas, meine Mitarbeiter.

Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow-workmen.

Die Gnade des Herrn Jesus Christus sei mit eurem Geist!

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ [be] with your spirit.
