2 Hear this, you elders;
listen, all who live in the land.
Has anything like this ever happened in your days
or in the days of your ancestors?
and let your children tell it to their children,
and their children to the next generation.

Wail, all you drinkers of wine;
wail because of the new wine,
for it has been snatched from your lips.

and thrown it away,
leaving their branches white.

The priests are in mourning,
those who minister before the Lord.

the new wine is dried up,
the olive oil fails.
wail, you vine growers;
grieve for the wheat and the barley,
because the harvest of the field is destroyed.
and the fig tree is withered;
the pomegranate, the palm and the appleb tree —
all the trees of the field — are dried up.
Surely the people’s joy
is withered away.
13 Put on sackcloth, you priests, and mourn;
wail, you who minister before the altar.
Come, spend the night in sackcloth,
you who minister before my God;
for the grain offerings and drink offerings
are withheld from the house of your God.
call a sacred assembly.
Summon the elders
and all who live in the land
to the house of the Lord your God,
and cry out to the Lord.
For the day of the Lord is near;
it will come like destruction from the Almighty.c

The storehouses are in ruins,
the granaries have been broken down,
for the grain has dried up.
The herds mill about
because they have no pasture;
even the flocks of sheep are suffering.

I. НАШЕСТВИЕ САРАНЧИ (Гл. 1)
А. Беспрецедентное бедствие (1:1−4)
1:1−4 Под нашествием саранчи Иоиль, сын Вафуила, подразумевает вторжение врагов в Иудею с севера. Это пророчество частично исполнилось во время вавилонских завоеваний, но относится также и к будущему захватчику: царю Севера (Ассирии).
Нашествие саранчи оказалось таким опустошительным, что даже старожилы не помнили такого во дни их. Бедствие проходило в четыре этапа, которые соответствуют четырем стадиям развития саранчи (жующая, роящаяся, ползающая и пожирающая). Возможно, это — символическое указание на четыре мировые империи, господствовавшие над избранным народом: Вавилон, Персия, Греция и Рим
Б. Пострадавшие от этого бедствия:
1. пьяницы (1:5−7)
2. священники (1:8−10, 13−16)
3. земледельцы (1:11−12, 17−18)
4. пророк Иоиль (1:19−20)
Пророк призывает к покаянию весь народ — от пьяниц до земледельцев (ст. 11−12, 17−18) и священников (ст. 8−10, 13−16).
Саранча настолько опустошила землю, что не с чем было даже предстать пред Господом для жертвоприношений и возлияний (ст. 8−10).
Пророк усматривал в этом бедствии день Господень, который близок — как опустошение от Всемогущего придет он (ст. 15). Выражение «день Господень» означает вмешательство Бога в ход истории для суда и уничтожения зла, когда Он усмиряет бунтовщиков и торжествует во славе. В эсхатологическом смысле «День Господень» включает Великую Скорбь, Второе Пришествие, Тысячелетнее Царство и гибель в огне старого неба и земли.
Обращаясь к Богу от лица народа, Иоиль умоляет Его о милости, так как огонь пожрал злачные пастбища и все деревья. Даже животные на поле взывают к Нему, потому что иссохли потоки вод.
