We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning,a whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life.

Є҆́же бѣ̀ и҆спе́рва, є҆́же слы́шахомъ, є҆́же ви́дѣхомъ ѻ҆чи́ма на́шима, є҆́же ѹ҆зрѣ́хомъ, и҆ рѹ́ки на́шѧ ѡ҆сѧза́ша, ѡ҆ словесѝ живо́тнѣмъ:

This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us.

и҆ живо́тъ ѩ҆ви́сѧ, и҆ ви́дѣхомъ, и҆ свидѣ́телствѹемъ, и҆ возвѣща́емъ ва́мъ живо́тъ вѣ́чный, и҆́же бѣ̀ ѹ҆ ѻ҆ц҃а̀ и҆ ѩ҆ви́сѧ на́мъ:

We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

є҆́же ви́дѣхомъ и҆ слы́шахомъ, повѣ́даемъ ва́мъ, да и҆ вы̀ ѻ҆бще́нїе и҆́мате съ на́ми: ѻ҆бще́нїе же на́ше со ѻ҆ц҃е́мъ и҆ съ сн҃омъ є҆гѡ̀ ї҆и҃сомъ хр҇то́мъ.

We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.b

И҆ сїѧ҄ пи́шемъ ва́мъ, да ра́дость ва́ша бѹ́детъ и҆спо́лнена.

This is the message we heard from Jesusc and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all.

И҆ сїѐ є҆́сть ѡ҆бѣтова́нїе, є҆́же слы́шахомъ ѿ негѡ̀ и҆ повѣ́даемъ ва́мъ, ѩ҆́кѡ бг҃ъ свѣ́тъ є҆́сть, и҆ тмы̀ въ не́мъ нѣ́сть ни є҆ди́ныѧ.

So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth.

(За҄ 69.) А҆́ще рече́мъ, ѩ҆́кѡ ѻ҆бще́нїе и҆́мамы съ ни́мъ, и҆ во тмѣ̀ хо́димъ, лже́мъ и҆ не твори́мъ и҆́стины:

But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

а҆́ще же во свѣ́тѣ хо́димъ, ѩ҆́коже са́мъ то́й є҆́сть во свѣ́тѣ, ѻ҆бще́нїе и҆́мамы дрѹ́гъ ко дрѹ́гѹ, и҆ кро́вь ї҆и҃са хр҇та̀ сн҃а є҆гѡ̀ ѡ҆чища́етъ на́съ ѿ всѧ́кагѡ грѣха̀.

If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.

А҆́ще рече́мъ, ѩ҆́кѡ грѣха̀ не и҆́мамы, себѐ прельща́емъ, и҆ и҆́стины нѣ́сть въ на́съ.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

А҆́ще и҆сповѣ́даемъ грѣхѝ на́шѧ, вѣ́ренъ є҆́сть и҆ првднъ, да ѡ҆ста́витъ на́мъ грѣхѝ на́шѧ и҆ ѡ҆ч҇титъ на́съ ѿ всѧ́кїѧ непра́вды.

If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.

А҆́ще рече́мъ, ѩ҆́кѡ не согрѣши́хомъ, лжа̀ твори́мъ є҆го̀, и҆ сло́во є҆гѡ̀ нѣ́сть въ на́съ.
