These are the names of the sons of Israel (that is, Jacob) who moved to Egypt with their father, each with his family:

Вот имена́ сыно́в Изра́илевых, кото́рые вошли́ в Еги́пет с Иа́ковом, вошли́ ка́ждый с до́мом свои́м:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,

Руви́м, Симео́н, Ле́вий и Иу́да,

Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,

Иссаха́р, Завуло́н и Вениами́н,

Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Дан и Неффали́м, Гад и Аси́р.

In all, Jacob had seventya descendants in Egypt, including Joseph, who was already there.

Всех же душ, происше́дших от чресл Иа́кова, бы́ло се́мьдесят, а Ио́сиф был уже́ в Еги́пте.

In time, Joseph and all of his brothers died, ending that entire generation.

И у́мер Ио́сиф и все бра́тья его́ и весь род их;

But their descendants, the Israelites, had many children and grandchildren. In fact, they multiplied so greatly that they became extremely powerful and filled the land.

а сыны́ Изра́илевы расплоди́лись, и размно́жились, и возросли́ и уси́лились чрезвыча́йно, и напо́лнилась и́ми земля́ та.

Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done.

И восста́л в Еги́пте но́вый царь, кото́рый не знал Ио́сифа,

He said to his people, “Look, the people of Israel now outnumber us and are stronger than we are.

и сказа́л наро́ду своему́: вот, наро́д сыно́в Изра́илевых многочи́слен и сильне́е нас;

We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more. If we don’t, and if war breaks out, they will join our enemies and fight against us. Then they will escape from the country.b”

перехитри́м же его́, что́бы он не размножа́лся; ина́че, когда́ случи́тся война́, соедини́тся и он с на́шими неприя́телями, и вооружи́тся про́тив нас, и вы́йдет из земли́ на́шей.

So the Egyptians made the Israelites their slaves. They appointed brutal slave drivers over them, hoping to wear them down with crushing labor. They forced them to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses as supply centers for the king.

И поста́вили над ним нача́льников рабо́т, что́бы изнуря́ли его́ тя́жкими рабо́тами. И он постро́ил фарао́ну Пи́фом и Раамсе́с, города́ для запа́сов.

But the more the Egyptians oppressed them, the more the Israelites multiplied and spread, and the more alarmed the Egyptians became.

Но чем бо́лее изнуря́ли его́, тем бо́лее он умножа́лся и тем бо́лее возраста́л, так что опаса́лись сыно́в Изра́илевых.

So the Egyptians worked the people of Israel without mercy.

И потому́ Египтя́не с жесто́костью принужда́ли сыно́в Изра́илевых к рабо́там

They made their lives bitter, forcing them to mix mortar and make bricks and do all the work in the fields. They were ruthless in all their demands.

и де́лали жизнь их го́рькою от тя́жкой рабо́ты над гли́ною и кирпича́ми и от вся́кой рабо́ты полево́й, от вся́кой рабо́ты, к кото́рой принужда́ли их с жесто́костью.

Then Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave this order to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah:

Царь Еги́петский повеле́л повива́льным ба́бкам Еврея́нок, из ко́их одно́й и́мя Ши́фра, а друго́й Фуа́,

“When you help the Hebrew women as they give birth, watch as they deliver.c If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live.”

и сказа́л: когда́ вы бу́дете повива́ть у Еврея́нок, то наблюда́йте при ро́дах: е́сли бу́дет сын, то умерщвля́йте его́, а е́сли дочь, то пусть живёт.

But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king’s orders. They allowed the boys to live, too.

Но повива́льные ба́бки боя́лись Бо́га и не де́лали так, как говори́л им царь Еги́петский, и оставля́ли дете́й в живы́х.

So the king of Egypt called for the midwives. “Why have you done this?” he demanded. “Why have you allowed the boys to live?”

Царь Еги́петский призва́л повива́льных ба́бок и сказа́л им: для чего́ вы де́лаете тако́е де́ло, что оставля́ете дете́й в живы́х?

“The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,” the midwives replied. “They are more vigorous and have their babies so quickly that we cannot get there in time.”

Повива́льные ба́бки сказа́ли фарао́ну: Евре́йские же́нщины не так, как Еги́петские; они́ здоро́вы, и́бо пре́жде не́жели придёт к ним повива́льная ба́бка, они́ уже́ рожда́ют.

So God was good to the midwives, and the Israelites continued to multiply, growing more and more powerful.

За сие́ Бог де́лал добро́ повива́льным ба́бкам, а наро́д умножа́лся и весьма́ уси́ливался.

And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

И так как повива́льные ба́бки боя́лись Бо́га, то Он устроя́л домы́ их.

Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the Nile River. But you may let the girls live.”

Тогда́ фарао́н всему́ наро́ду своему́ повеле́л, говоря́: вся́кого новорождённого у Евре́ев сы́на броса́йте в ре́ку, а вся́кую дочь оставля́йте в живы́х.
