Вот имена сыновей Израиля (он же Иаков), которые пришли с ним в Египет, каждый со своей семьей:

These are the names of the sons of Israel (that is, Jacob) who moved to Egypt with their father, each with his family:

Рувим, Симеон, Левий и Иуда,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,

Иссахар, Завулон и Вениамин,

Issachar, Zebulun, Benjamin,

Дан и Неффалим, Гад и Асир.

Dan, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Всех потомков Иакова было семьдесят[1]. Иосиф уже был в Египте.

In all, Jacob had seventya descendants in Egypt, including Joseph, who was already there.

Иосиф, его братья и всё то поколение умерло,

In time, Joseph and all of his brothers died, ending that entire generation.

но израильтяне были плодовиты; они сильно умножились и их стало так много, что они заполнили всю местность.

But their descendants, the Israelites, had many children and grandchildren. In fact, they multiplied so greatly that they became extremely powerful and filled the land.

Прошло время, и к власти в Египте пришёл новый царь, который не знал про Иосифа.

Eventually, a new king came to power in Egypt who knew nothing about Joseph or what he had done.

Он сказал своему народу: — Смотрите, израильтяне становятся многочисленнее и сильнее нас.

He said to his people, “Look, the people of Israel now outnumber us and are stronger than we are.

Давайте поступим мудро, иначе их станет ещё больше, и, если случится война, они присоединятся к нашим врагам, выступят против нас и покинут страну.

We must make a plan to keep them from growing even more. If we don’t, and if war breaks out, they will join our enemies and fight against us. Then they will escape from the country.b”

Египтяне поставили над израильтянами надсмотрщиков, чтобы изнурять их подневольным трудом, и те построили фараону Питом и Раамсес, города для хранения запасов.

So the Egyptians made the Israelites their slaves. They appointed brutal slave drivers over them, hoping to wear them down with crushing labor. They forced them to build the cities of Pithom and Rameses as supply centers for the king.

Но чем больше их угнетали, тем больше их становилось, и они расселялись так, что египтяне начали бояться израильтян

But the more the Egyptians oppressed them, the more the Israelites multiplied and spread, and the more alarmed the Egyptians became.

и с жестокостью принуждали их трудиться.

So the Egyptians worked the people of Israel without mercy.

Они сделали жизнь израильтян горькой, заставляя изготовлять кирпичи из глины, заниматься строительством, а также работать в поле. Израильтян безо всякой жалости заставляли делать всю эту тяжелую работу.

They made their lives bitter, forcing them to mix mortar and make bricks and do all the work in the fields. They were ruthless in all their demands.

Царь Египта сказал еврейским повитухам, которых звали Шифра и Пуа:

Then Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave this order to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah:

— Когда вы будете принимать роды у еврейских женщин, то следите за ними на родильном стуле: если родится мальчик — убивайте его, а если девочка — оставляйте в живых.

“When you help the Hebrew women as they give birth, watch as they deliver.c If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live.”

Но повитухи боялись Бога и не исполняли приказ египетского царя. Они оставляли мальчиков в живых.

But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king’s orders. They allowed the boys to live, too.

Царь Египта вызвал повитух и спросил: — Зачем вы это делаете? Зачем оставляете мальчиков в живых?

So the king of Egypt called for the midwives. “Why have you done this?” he demanded. “Why have you allowed the boys to live?”

Повитухи ответили фараону: — Еврейские женщины не такие, как египетские: они крепкие и рожают ещё до прихода повитух.

“The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women,” the midwives replied. “They are more vigorous and have their babies so quickly that we cannot get there in time.”

За это Бог был милостив к повитухам, а народ продолжал увеличиваться и стал ещё многочисленнее.

So God was good to the midwives, and the Israelites continued to multiply, growing more and more powerful.

За то, что повитухи боялись Бога, Он даровал им в награду семьи и детей.[2]

And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.

Тогда фараон приказал своему народу: — Каждого мальчика, который рождается у евреев, бросайте в реку Нил, а девочек оставляйте в живых.

Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: “Throw every newborn Hebrew boy into the Nile River. But you may let the girls live.”
