Пять дней спустя первосвященник Aнания со старейшинами и юристом Тертуллом пришел в Кесарию, чтобы представить правителю обвинение против Павла.

And after five days Ananias the high priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.

Когда Павла ввели, Тертулл представил обвинение против него:

And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great quietness, and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy providence,

— Досточтимейший Феликс! Мы с глубокой признательностью принимаем продолжительный мир и реформы, которыми пользуется наш народ при твоем разумном правлении.

We accept it always, and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

Чтобы тебя более не утруждать, я попрошу тебя с твоей обычной добротой выслушать нашу короткую просьбу.

Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou wouldest hear us of thy clemency a few words.

For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes:

и хотел даже осквернить храм. Поэтому мы его арестовали [и хотели судить по нашему закону.

Who also hath gone about to profane the temple: whom we took, and would have judged according to our law.

Но трибун Лисий силой забрал его из наших рук,

But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,

велев его обвинителям идти к тебе. Когда ты допросишь его, ты и сам узнаешь обо всем, в чем мы обвиняем его.

Commanding his accusers to come unto thee: by examining of whom thyself mayest take knowledge of all these things, whereof we accuse him.

Иудеи поддержали обвинение, заверив, что все сказанное истинно.

And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.

Правитель подал знак Павлу, и тот начал защитную речь: — Мне известно, что ты уже много лет судишь этот народ, и я рад, что мне предоставляется возможность высказаться перед тобой в свою защиту.

Then Paul, after that the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself:

Тебе нетрудно будет удостовериться в том, что двенадцать дней тому назад я пришел на поклонение в Иерусалим.

Because that thou mayest understand, that there are yet but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem for to worship.

Мои обвинители не видели меня спорящим с кем-либо в храме или же возмущающим народ в синагогах или в городе.

And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city:

Они не могут доказать обвинения против меня, которые сейчас выдвигают.

Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accuse me.

Я, однако, могу признать, что поклоняюсь Богу наших отцов и следую учению, которое мои обвинители называют ересью. Я верю всему, что записано в законе и у пророков,

But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call heresy, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets:

и у меня такая же надежда на Бога, как и у этих людей — надежда на то, что будет воскресение как праведных, так и неправедных.

And have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

Поэтому я стараюсь, чтобы моя совесть была всегда чиста перед Богом и перед людьми.

And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.

— После нескольких лет отсутствия я прибыл, чтобы передать моему народу пожертвования, собранные для бедных, и принести жертвы Богу.

Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation, and offerings.

Меня застали в храме, когда я совершал обрядовое очищение (там не было никакой толпы и никаких беспорядков),

Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult.

иудеи из Aсии, которым следовало бы представить здесь свои обвинения, если у них есть, в чем меня обвинить.

Who ought to have been here before thee, and object, if they had ought against me.

Или же пусть присутствующие здесь скажут, какую вину они нашли за мной, когда меня допрашивал Синедрион.

Or else let these same here say, if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,

Может быть, моя вина в словах, которые я выкрикнул там: "Меня судят сегодня перед вами за воскресение мертвых"?

Except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead I am called in question by you this day.

Феликс, который был довольно хорошо знаком с этим учением, прервал слушание. — Я вынесу решение по твоему вопросу, когда придет трибун Лисий, — сказал он.

And when Felix heard these things, having more perfect knowledge of that way, he deferred them, and said, When Lysias the chief captain shall come down, I will know the uttermost of your matter.

Он приказал центуриону содержать Павла под стражей, но предоставить ему некоторую свободу и разрешить его друзьям заботиться о его нуждах.

And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minister or come unto him.

Спустя несколько дней Феликс пришел со своей женой — еврейкой Друзиллой. Он послал за Павлом, чтобы послушать о его вере в Иисуса Христа.

And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ.

Павел говорил о праведности, воздержании и будущем суде. Феликса это испугало, и он сказал: — Довольно на сегодня! Но при случае я тебя позову.

And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

Он надеялся, что Павел предложит ему взятку, и поэтому часто посылал за ним и беседовал с ним.

He hoped also that money should have been given him of Paul, that he might loose him: wherefore he sent for him the oftener, and communed with him.

Прошло два года, и Феликса сменил Порций Фест. Феликс, желая заслужить благосклонность иудеев, оставил Павла в тюрьме.

But after two years Porcius Festus came into Felix' room: and Felix, willing to shew the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
