Пройдя Aмфиполь и Aполлонию, они пришли в Фессалоники, где была иудейская синагога.

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

Павел, по своему обычаю, пошел в синагогу. Там он три субботы подряд рассуждал с иудеями о Писании,

Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

объясняя и доказывая, что Мессия должен был пострадать и воскреснуть из мертвых. — Иисус, о котором я вам проповедую, и есть этот Мессия, — говорил Павел.

explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, “This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ.”

Им удалось убедить нескольких иудеев, многих богобоязненных греков и немало знатных женщин, и они присоединились к Павлу и Силе.

And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.

Это возбудило зависть остальных иудеев, и они, взяв с собой негодных людей из уличного сброда, собрали толпу и устроили в городе беспорядки. Они ринулись к дому Иасона, ища Павла и Силу, чтобы вывести их к толпе.

But the Jews [a]who were not persuaded, [b]becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

Не найдя их там, они потащили Иасона и других братьев к городским властям. — Эти люди устраивают беспорядки по всему миру, а сейчас пришли и сюда, — кричала толпа,

But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.

— и Иасон принял их в свой дом. Они нарушают повеления императора и говорят, что есть другой царь, которого зовут Иисус.

Jason has [c]harbored them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king — Jesus.”

Толпа и городские власти, слыша это, встревожились.

And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.

Они взяли с Иасона и остальных залог и отпустили их.

So when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.

Братья же немедленно ночью отправили Павла и Силу в Верию. Прибыв в Верию, они пошли в иудейскую синагогу.

Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

Верийцы, в отличие от фессалоникийцев, были людьми более широкого склада ума. Они с большим интересом восприняли сказанное Павлом и каждый день исследовали Писания, чтобы проверить, соответствует ли это истине.

These were more [d]fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

Многие из них поверили, поверило также много знатных гречанок и немало греков.

Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

Но когда иудеи в Фессалониках узнали о том, что Павел проповедует слово Божье в Верии, они пришли и туда и стали волновать и возмущать народ.

But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds.

Братья сразу же отослали Павла к морю, а Сила и Тимофей остались в городе.

Then immediately the brethren sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there.

Провожатые Павла пришли с ним в Aфины и затем отправились обратно с повелением Павла Силе и Тимофею как можно скорее прийти к нему.

So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.

Павел в ожидании своих спутников ходил по Aфинам, и его возмущало огромное количество идолов в этом городе.

Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was [e]given over to idols.

Он беседовал в синагоге с иудеями и чтущими Бога греками. Каждый день он говорил со случайными встречными на базарной площади.

Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshipers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.

В беседу с ним вступали и некоторые философы, принадлежавшие к школам эпикурейцев и стоиков. Одни спрашивали: — И что этот пустомеля хочет сказать? Другие говорили: — Он, кажется, проповедует чужеземных богов, — потому что Павел проповедовал Радостную весть о Христе и Его воскресении.

[f]Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, “What does this [g]babbler want to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods,” because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.

Павла привели в Aреопаг и попросили: — Расскажи нам, что это за новое учение, которое ты проповедуешь?

And they took him and brought him to the [h]Areopagus, saying, “May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?

Ты говоришь о чем-то странном, и нам хотелось бы знать, что все это значит.

For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean.”

Наилучшим времяпрепровождением для афинян и живущих там иностранцев было говорить или слушать что-нибудь новое.

For all the Athenians and the foreigners who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear some new thing.

И Павел, встав посреди Aреопага, сказал: — Aфиняне! Я по всему вижу, что вы очень религиозны.

Then Paul stood in the midst of the [i]Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious;

Я ходил вокруг и внимательно осматривал ваши святыни. На одном из жертвенников было написано: "Неизвестному богу". Об этом неизвестном Боге, которого вы почитаете, даже не зная, кто Он такой, я и хочу вам рассказать.

for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:

Бог, сотворивший мир и все, что в нем, является Господом неба и земли. Он не живет в храмах, построенных руками людей,

God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

и не нуждается в том, чтобы люди служили Ему своими руками, как будто Ему что-то нужно, ведь Он сам дает всем людям жизнь, дыхание и все.

Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.

От одного человека Он произвел все человечество, чтобы люди заселили всю землю, на которой Он определил для всех время и место обитания,

And He has made from one [j]blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,

и чтобы они искали Бога, могли ощутить Его и найти Его, хотя Он и не далек от каждого из нас.

so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

В Нем мы живем, движемся и существуем, как об этом говорили и некоторые из ваших поэтов: "Ведь мы — Его род".

for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’

И если мы от Него произошли, то мы не должны представлять Божество в виде золотого, серебряного или каменного истукана, или в виде какого-либо образа, сделанного по замыслу и умением человека.

Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.

Итак, оставляя в стороне времена невежества, Бог повелевает сейчас всем людям повсюду покаяться.

Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

Он назначил день, когда Он будет судить мир справедливым судом через Человека, которого Он сам избрал. Он удостоверил для всех Его избрание, воскресив Его из мертвых!

because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

Когда они услышали о воскресении из мертвых, то некоторые из них начали посмеиваться, другие же сказали: — Об этом мы послушаем тебя в другой раз.

And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter.”

С этим Павел и покинул собрание.

So Paul departed from among them.

Несколько человек, однако, заняли сторону Павла и поверили. Среди них были Дионисий, член Aреопага, женщина по имени Дамарь и другие.

However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
