— Братья и отцы, разрешите мне высказаться в свою защиту.

“Brothers and esteemed fathers,” Paul said, “listen to me as I offer my defense.”

Когда они услышали, что он говорит по-еврейски, то стали еще внимательнее слушать.

When they heard him speaking in their own language,a the silence was even greater.

— Я иудей, уроженец Тарса в Киликии, но воспитывался я в этом городе у Гамалиила и был научен точно соблюдать закон наших отцов. Я борюсь за дело Божье так же ревностно, как и каждый из вас сегодня.

Then Paul said, “I am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, and I was brought up and educated here in Jerusalem under Gamaliel. As his student, I was carefully trained in our Jewish laws and customs. I became very zealous to honor God in everything I did, just like all of you today.

Я преследовал и мучил до смерти последователей учения Иисуса, арестовывал мужчин и женщин и отправлял их в тюрьмы.

And I persecuted the followers of the Way, hounding some to death, arresting both men and women and throwing them in prison.

Свидетели тому — первосвященник и весь Совет старейшин. Я даже получил от них письма к братьям в Дамаске и пошел туда, чтобы арестовать тех, кто там был, и привести их в Иерусалим для наказания.

The high priest and the whole council of elders can testify that this is so. For I received letters from them to our Jewish brothers in Damascus, authorizing me to bring the followers of the Way from there to Jerusalem, in chains, to be punished.

— По пути, когда я уже подходил к Дамаску, около полудня меня вдруг озарил ослепительный свет с неба.

“As I was on the road, approaching Damascus about noon, a very bright light from heaven suddenly shone down around me.

Я упал на землю и услышал голос, который говорил мне: "Савл! Савл! Зачем ты преследуешь Меня?"

I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’

Я спросил: "Кто Ты, Господи?" Он ответил: "Я Иисус из Назарета, которого ты преследуешь".

“‘Who are you, lord?’ I asked. “And the voice replied, ‘I am Jesus the Nazarene,b the one you are persecuting.’

Мои спутники видели свет, но голоса, который я слышал, они не слышали.

The people with me saw the light but didn’t understand the voice speaking to me.

Я спросил: "Господи, что мне делать?" Господь сказал: "Встань и иди в Дамаск. Там тебе скажут все, что тебе предстоит сделать".

“I asked, ‘What should I do, Lord?’ “And the Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told everything you are to do.’

Мои спутники за руку привели меня в Дамаск, так как я был ослеплен сиянием света.

“I was blinded by the intense light and had to be led by the hand to Damascus by my companions.

— Там ко мне пришел человек по имени Aнания, тщательно соблюдавший закон и уважаемый всеми местными иудеями.

A man named Ananias lived there. He was a godly man, deeply devoted to the law, and well regarded by all the Jews of Damascus.

Он подошел ко мне и сказал: "Брат Савл, прозри!" И в тот же момент я прозрел и увидел этого человека.

He came and stood beside me and said, ‘Brother Saul, regain your sight.’ And that very moment I could see him!

Он сказал: "Бог наших отцов избрал тебя, чтобы ты узнал Его волю, увидел Праведного и услышал голос из Его уст.

“Then he told me, ‘The God of our ancestors has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and hear him speak.

Ты будешь для всех людей свидетелем того, что ты видел и слышал.

For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard.

Не медли! Вставай, прими крещение и смой свои грехи, призвав Его имя".

What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’

Потом я возвратился в Иерусалим, и, молясь в храме, я пришел в состояние экстаза.

“After I returned to Jerusalem, I was praying in the Temple and fell into a trance.

Я увидел Господа, который говорил мне: "Скорее выйди из Иерусалима, потому что здесь не примут твоего свидетельства обо Мне".

I saw a vision of Jesusc saying to me, ‘Hurry! Leave Jerusalem, for the people here won’t accept your testimony about me.’

Я ответил: "Господи, эти люди знают, что я ходил из синагоги в синагогу, чтобы арестовывать и избивать тех, кто верит в Тебя.

“‘But Lord,’ I argued, ‘they certainly know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed in you.

Когда проливалась кровь Твоего свидетеля Стефана, я стоял там и одобрял это, я сторожил одежды его убийц".

And I was in complete agreement when your witness Stephen was killed. I stood by and kept the coats they took off when they stoned him.’

Тогда Господь сказал мне: "Иди, Я посылаю тебя далеко к язычникам".

“But the Lord said to me, ‘Go, for I will send you far away to the Gentiles!’”

До этих слов толпа слушала Павла, но тут они стали кричать: — Долой его с лица земли! Он не достоин жизни!

The crowd listened until Paul said that word. Then they all began to shout, “Away with such a fellow! He isn’t fit to live!”

Они кричали, размахивали своими плащами и бросали пыль в воздух.

They yelled, threw off their coats, and tossed handfuls of dust into the air.

Трибун приказал увести Павла в казарму. Он велел избить его и допросить, чтобы узнать, почему народ так негодует на него.

The commander brought Paul inside and ordered him lashed with whips to make him confess his crime. He wanted to find out why the crowd had become so furious.

Но когда Павла привязали, чтобы бить, он сказал стоявшему рядом центуриону: — Разве позволено бить римского гражданина, к тому же еще не осужденного?

When they tied Paul down to lash him, Paul said to the officerd standing there, “Is it legal for you to whip a Roman citizen who hasn’t even been tried?”

Когда центурион это услышал, он пошел и доложил трибуну. — Что ты делаешь? Этот человек римский гражданин, — сказал он.

When the officer heard this, he went to the commander and asked, “What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen!”

Трибун вышел к Павлу и спросил: — Ты действительно римский гражданин? — Да, — ответил тот.

So the commander went over and asked Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” “Yes, I certainly am,” Paul replied.

Тогда трибун сказал: — Мне пришлось заплатить немало денег за мое гражданство. — A я был рожден в нем, — ответил Павел.

“I am, too,” the commander muttered, “and it cost me plenty!” Paul answered, “But I am a citizen by birth!”

Те, кто должны были его допрашивать, сразу же отошли от него. Трибун тоже встревожился, когда узнал, что он заковал в цепи римского гражданина.

The soldiers who were about to interrogate Paul quickly withdrew when they heard he was a Roman citizen, and the commander was frightened because he had ordered him bound and whipped.

На следующий день трибун, желая точно узнать, в чем же иудеи обвиняют Павла, освободил его от оков и приказал, чтобы собрались первосвященники и весь Синедрион. Затем он ввел Павла и поставил перед ними.

The next day the commander ordered the leading priests into session with the Jewish high council.e He wanted to find out what the trouble was all about, so he released Paul to have him stand before them.
