Jotham did what was pleasing in the LORD’s sight. He did everything his father, Uzziah, had done, except that Jotham did not sin by entering the Temple of the LORD. But the people continued in their corrupt ways.
And yet they say to God, ‘Go away. We want no part of you and your ways.
For I have stayed on God’s paths; I have followed his ways and not turned aside.
“Wicked people rebel against the light. They refuse to acknowledge its ways or stay in its paths.
For they turned away from following him. They have no respect for any of his ways.
Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways. By your mighty power you rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies.
For I have kept the ways of the LORD; I have not turned from my God to follow evil.
Then I will teach your ways to rebels, and they will return to you.
God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God.
May your ways be known throughout the earth, your saving power among people everywhere.
But God will smash the heads of his enemies, crushing the skulls of those who love their guilty ways.
O God, your ways are holy. Is there any god as mighty as you?
I listen carefully to what God the LORD is saying, for he speaks peace to his faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways.
Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you.
I will study your commandments and reflect on your ways.
Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good.
But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O LORD. Take them away with those who do evil. May Israel have peace!
1 How joyful are those who fear the LORD — all who follow his ways!
Yes, they will sing about the LORD’s ways, for the glory of the LORD is very great.
They take pleasure in doing wrong, and they enjoy the twisted ways of evil.
Their actions are crooked, and their ways are wrong.
She will guide you down delightful paths; all her ways are satisfying.
Don’t envy violent people or copy their ways.
I will teach you wisdom’s ways and lead you in straight paths.
Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise!
“And so, my children, listen to me, for all who follow my ways are joyful.
Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.”
O my son, give me your heart. May your eyes take delight in following my ways.
Wash yourselves and be clean! Get your sins out of my sight. Give up your evil ways.
People from many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of Jacob’s God. There he will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths.” For the LORD’s teaching will go out from Zion; his word will go out from Jerusalem.
And a great road will go through that once deserted land. It will be named the Highway of Holiness. Evil-minded people will never travel on it. It will be only for those who walk in God’s ways; fools will never walk there.
Truly, O God of Israel, our Savior, you work in mysterious ways.
And all your friends, those with whom you’ve done business since childhood, will go their own ways, turning a deaf ear to your cries.
Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the LORD that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.
For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.
You welcome those who gladly do good, who follow godly ways. But you have been very angry with us, for we are not godly. We are constant sinners; how can people like us be saved?
But those who choose their own ways — delighting in their detestable sins — will not have their offerings accepted. When such people sacrifice a bull, it is no more acceptable than a human sacrifice. When they sacrifice a lamb, it’s as though they had sacrificed a dog! When they bring an offering of grain, they might as well offer the blood of a pig. When they burn frankincense, it’s as if they had blessed an idol.
Then I said, “But what can we expect from the poor? They are ignorant. They don’t know the ways of the LORD. They don’t understand God’s laws.
So I will go and speak to their leaders. Surely they know the ways of the LORD and understand God’s laws.” But the leaders, too, as one man, had thrown off God’s yoke and broken his chains.
This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, says: “‘Even now, if you quit your evil ways, I will let you stay in your own land.
Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol.
And if these nations truly learn the ways of my people, and if they learn to swear by my name, saying, ‘As surely as the LORD lives’ (just as they taught my people to swear by the name of Baal), then they will be given a place among my people.
I will winnow you like grain at the gates of your cities and take away the children you hold dear. I will destroy my own people, because they refuse to change their evil ways.
but then that nation renounces its evil ways, I will not destroy it as I had planned.
“Therefore, Jeremiah, go and warn all Judah and Jerusalem. Say to them, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am planning disaster for you instead of good. So turn from your evil ways, each of you, and do what is right.’”
If they had stood before me and listened to me, they would have spoken my words, and they would have turned my people from their evil ways and deeds.
Perhaps they will listen and turn from their evil ways. Then I will change my mind about the disaster I am ready to pour out on them because of their sins.
Time after time I sent you prophets, who told you, “Turn from your wicked ways, and start doing things right. Stop worshiping other gods so that you might live in peace here in the land I have given to you and your ancestors.” But you would not listen to me or obey me.
Perhaps even yet they will turn from their evil ways and ask the LORD’s forgiveness before it is too late. For the LORD has threatened them with his terrible anger.”
