26 Another rebel leader was Jeroboam son of Nebat, one of Solomon’s own officials. He came from the town of Zeredah in Ephraim, and his mother was Zeruah, a widow.

Jeroboam was a very capable young man, and when Solomon saw how industrious he was, he put him in charge of the labor force from the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, the descendants of Joseph.

One day as Jeroboam was leaving Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh met him along the way. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak. The two of them were alone in a field,

1Kgs 11:31

Then he said to Jeroboam, “Take ten of these pieces, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I am about to tear the kingdom from the hand of Solomon, and I will give ten of the tribes to you!

Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but he fled to King Shishak of Egypt and stayed there until Solomon died.

1Kgs 12:2

When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard of this, he returned from Egypt, for he had fled to Egypt to escape from King Solomon.

1Kgs 12:3

The leaders of Israel summoned him, and Jeroboam and the whole assembly of Israel went to speak with Rehoboam.

Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to hear Rehoboam’s decision, just as the king had ordered.

So the king paid no attention to the people. This turn of events was the will of the LORD, for it fulfilled the LORD’s message to Jeroboam son of Nebat through the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh.

When the people of Israel learned of Jeroboam’s return from Egypt, they called an assembly and made him king over all Israel. So only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the family of David.

25 Jeroboam then built up the city of Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and it became his capital. Later he went and built up the town of Peniel.

1Kgs 12:26

Jeroboam thought to himself, “Unless I am careful, the kingdom will return to the dynasty of David.

1Kgs 12:31

Jeroboam also erected buildings at the pagan shrines and ordained priests from the common people — those who were not from the priestly tribe of Levi.

1Kgs 12:32

And Jeroboam instituted a religious festival in Bethel, held on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, in imitation of the annual Festival of Shelters in Judah. There at Bethel he himself offered sacrifices to the calves he had made, and he appointed priests for the pagan shrines he had made.

1Kgs 12:33

So on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a day that he himself had designated, Jeroboam offered sacrifices on the altar at Bethel. He instituted a religious festival for Israel, and he went up to the altar to burn incense.

1Kgs 13:1

1 At the LORD’s command, a man of God from Judah went to Bethel, arriving there just as Jeroboam was approaching the altar to burn incense.

1Kgs 13:4

When King Jeroboam heard the man of God speaking against the altar at Bethel, he pointed at him and shouted, “Seize that man!” But instantly the king’s hand became paralyzed in that position, and he couldn’t pull it back.

1Kgs 13:33

But even after this, Jeroboam did not turn from his evil ways. He continued to choose priests from the common people. He appointed anyone who wanted to become a priest for the pagan shrines.

1Kgs 13:34

This became a great sin and resulted in the utter destruction of Jeroboam’s dynasty from the face of the earth.

1Kgs 14:1

1 At that time Jeroboam’s son Abijah became very sick.

1Kgs 14:2

So Jeroboam told his wife, “Disguise yourself so that no one will recognize you as my wife. Then go to the prophet Ahijah at Shiloh — the man who told me I would become king.

1Kgs 14:4

So Jeroboam’s wife went to Ahijah’s home at Shiloh. He was an old man now and could no longer see.

1Kgs 14:5

But the LORD had told Ahijah, “Jeroboam’s wife will come here, pretending to be someone else. She will ask you about her son, for he is very sick. Give her the answer I give you.”

1Kgs 14:6

So when Ahijah heard her footsteps at the door, he called out, “Come in, wife of Jeroboam! Why are you pretending to be someone else?” Then he told her, “I have bad news for you.

1Kgs 14:7

Give your husband, Jeroboam, this message from the LORD, the God of Israel: ‘I promoted you from the ranks of the common people and made you ruler over my people Israel.

1Kgs 14:11

The members of Jeroboam’s family who die in the city will be eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by vultures. I, the LORD, have spoken.’”

1Kgs 14:12

Then Ahijah said to Jeroboam’s wife, “Go on home, and when you enter the city, the child will die.

1Kgs 14:13

All Israel will mourn for him and bury him. He is the only member of your family who will have a proper burial, for this child is the only good thing that the LORD, the God of Israel, sees in the entire family of Jeroboam.

1Kgs 14:14

“In addition, the LORD will raise up a king over Israel who will destroy the family of Jeroboam. This will happen today, even now!

1Kgs 14:16

He will abandon Israel because Jeroboam sinned and made Israel sin along with him.”

1Kgs 14:17

So Jeroboam’s wife returned to Tirzah, and the child died just as she walked through the door of her home.

Jeroboam reigned in Israel twenty-two years. When Jeroboam died, his son Nadab became the next king.

There was constant war between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

1Kgs 15:1

1 Abijam began to rule over Judah in the eighteenth year of Jeroboam’s reign in Israel.

1Kgs 15:6

There was war between Abijam and Jeroboam throughout Abijam’s reign.

1Kgs 15:7

The rest of the events in Abijam’s reign and everything he did are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Judah. There was constant war between Abijam and Jeroboam.

1Kgs 15:9

9 Asa began to rule over Judah in the twentieth year of Jeroboam’s reign in Israel.

1Kgs 15:25

25 Nadab son of Jeroboam began to rule over Israel in the second year of King Asa’s reign in Judah. He reigned in Israel two years.

1Kgs 15:26

But he did what was evil in the LORD’s sight and followed the example of his father, continuing the sins that Jeroboam had led Israel to commit.

1Kgs 15:29

He immediately slaughtered all the descendants of King Jeroboam, so that not one of the royal family was left, just as the LORD had promised concerning Jeroboam by the prophet Ahijah from Shiloh.

1Kgs 15:30

This was done because Jeroboam had provoked the anger of the LORD, the God of Israel, by the sins he had committed and the sins he had led Israel to commit.

1Kgs 15:34

But he did what was evil in the LORD’s sight and followed the example of Jeroboam, continuing the sins that Jeroboam had led Israel to commit.

1Kgs 16:2

“I lifted you out of the dust to make you ruler of my people Israel, but you have followed the evil example of Jeroboam. You have provoked my anger by causing my people Israel to sin.

1Kgs 16:3

So now I will destroy you and your family, just as I destroyed the descendants of Jeroboam son of Nebat.

1Kgs 16:7

The message from the LORD against Baasha and his family came through the prophet Jehu son of Hanani. It was delivered because Baasha had done what was evil in the LORD’s sight (just as the family of Jeroboam had done), and also because Baasha had destroyed the family of Jeroboam. The LORD’s anger was provoked by Baasha’s sins.

1Kgs 16:19

For he, too, had done what was evil in the LORD’s sight. He followed the example of Jeroboam in all the sins he had committed and led Israel to commit.

1Kgs 16:26

He followed the example of Jeroboam son of Nebat in all the sins he had committed and led Israel to commit. The people provoked the anger of the LORD, the God of Israel, with their worthless idols.

1Kgs 16:31

And as though it were not enough to follow the sinful example of Jeroboam, he married Jezebel, the daughter of King Ethbaal of the Sidonians, and he began to bow down in worship of Baal.

I am going to destroy your family as I did the family of Jeroboam son of Nebat and the family of Baasha son of Ahijah, for you have made me very angry and have led Israel into sin.’
