1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”
“Who told you that you were naked?” the LORD God asked. “Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?”
Then the LORD God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.”
“Why are you so angry?” the LORD asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected?
Afterward the LORD asked Cain, “Where is your brother? Where is Abel?” “I don’t know,” Cain responded. “Am I my brother’s guardian?”
As for Ishmael, I will bless him also, just as you have asked. I will make him extremely fruitful and multiply his descendants. He will become the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
“Where is Sarah, your wife?” the visitors asked. “She’s inside the tent,” Abraham replied.
“Should I hide my plan from Abraham?” the LORD asked.
Meanwhile, the angels questioned Lot. “Do you have any other relatives here in the city?” they asked. “Get them out of this place — your sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone else.
Abimelech asked, “Why have you set these seven apart from the others?”
The servant asked, “But what if I can’t find a young woman who is willing to travel so far from home? Should I then take Isaac there to live among your relatives in the land you came from?”
“Whose daughter are you?” he asked. “And please tell me, would your father have any room to put us up for the night?”
“Then I asked, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘I am the daughter of Bethuel, and my grandparents are Nahor and Milcah.’ So I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her wrists.
So they called Rebekah. “Are you willing to go with this man?” they asked her. And she replied, “Yes, I will go.”
“Who is that man walking through the fields to meet us?” she asked the servant. And he replied, “It is my master.” So Rebekah covered her face with her veil.
But the two children struggled with each other in her womb. So she went to ask the LORD about it. “Why is this happening to me?” she asked.
When the men who lived there asked Isaac about his wife, Rebekah, he said, “She is my sister.” He was afraid to say, “She is my wife.” He thought, “They will kill me to get her, because she is so beautiful.”
“Why have you come here?” Isaac asked. “You obviously hate me, since you kicked me off your land.”
Isaac asked, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?” “The LORD your God put it in my path!” Jacob replied.
“But are you really my son Esau?” he asked. “Yes, I am,” Jacob replied.
But Isaac asked him, “Who are you?” Esau replied, “It’s your son, your firstborn son, Esau.”
Jacob went over to the shepherds and asked, “Where are you from, my friends?” “We are from Haran,” they answered.
“Do you know a man there named Laban, the grandson of Nahor?” he asked. “Yes, we do,” they replied.
“Is he doing well?” Jacob asked. “Yes, he’s well,” they answered. “Look, here comes his daughter Rachel with the flock now.”
Then Jacob became furious with Rachel. “Am I God?” he asked. “He’s the one who has kept you from having children!”
“What wages do you want?” Laban asked again. Jacob replied, “Don’t give me anything. Just do this one thing, and I’ll continue to tend and watch over your flocks.
If any were attacked and killed by wild animals, I never showed you the carcass and asked you to reduce the count of your flock. No, I took the loss myself! You made me pay for every stolen animal, whether it was taken in broad daylight or in the dark of night.
“What is your name?” the man asked. He replied, “Jacob.”
Then Esau looked at the women and children and asked, “Who are these people with you?” “These are the children God has graciously given to me, your servant,” Jacob replied.
“And what were all the flocks and herds I met as I came?” Esau asked. Jacob replied, “They are a gift, my lord, to ensure your friendship.”
This time he told the dream to his father as well as to his brothers, but his father scolded him. “What kind of dream is that?” he asked. “Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow to the ground before you?”
When he arrived there, a man from the area noticed him wandering around the countryside. “What are you looking for?” he asked.
So he stopped and propositioned her. “Let me have sex with you,” he said, not realizing that she was his own daughter-in-law. “How much will you pay to have sex with me?” Tamar asked.
“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah promised. “But what will you give me to guarantee that you will send the goat?” she asked.
Later Judah asked his friend Hirah the Adullamite to take the young goat to the woman and to pick up the things he had given her as his guarantee. But Hirah couldn’t find her.
So he asked the men who lived there, “Where can I find the shrine prostitute who was sitting beside the road at the entrance to Enaim?” “We’ve never had a shrine prostitute here,” they replied.
“Why do you look so worried today?” he asked them.
So Pharaoh asked his officials, “Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God?”
“Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the boy?” Reuben asked. “But you wouldn’t listen. And now we have to answer for his blood!”
“The man kept asking us questions about our family,” they replied. “He asked, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ So we answered his questions. How could we know he would say, ‘Bring your brother down here’?”
After greeting them, he asked, “How is your father, the old man you spoke about? Is he still alive?”
Then Joseph looked at his brother Benjamin, the son of his own mother. “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” Joseph asked. “May God be gracious to you, my son.”
“My lord, previously you asked us, your servants, ‘Do you have a father or a brother?’
And Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?” They replied, “We, your servants, are shepherds, just like our ancestors.
“How old are you?” Pharaoh asked him.
Then Jacob looked over at the two boys. “Are these your sons?” he asked.
Then the baby’s sister approached the princess. “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked.
When the girls returned to Reuel, their father, he asked, “Why are you back so soon today?”
“Then where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave him there? Invite him to come and eat with us.”
Then the LORD asked him, “What is that in your hand?” “A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied.
