1 Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together,
O [a]undesirable nation,
Or the day passes like chaff,
Before the Lord’s fierce anger comes upon you,
Before the day of the Lord’s anger comes upon you!
Who have upheld His justice.
Seek righteousness, seek humility.
It may be that you will be hidden
In the day of the Lord’s anger.
4 For Gaza shall be forsaken,
And Ashkelon desolate;
They shall drive out Ashdod at noonday,
And Ekron shall be uprooted.
The nation of the Cherethites!
The word of the Lord is against you,
O Canaan, land of the Philistines:
“I will destroy you;
So there shall be no inhabitant.”
With [b]shelters for shepherds and folds for flocks.
They shall feed their flocks there;
In the houses of Ashkelon they shall lie down at evening.
For the Lord their God will intervene[c] for them,
And return their captives.
And the insults of the people of Ammon,
With which they have reproached My people,
And made arrogant threats against their borders.
Says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,
“Surely Moab shall be like Sodom,
And the people of Ammon like Gomorrah —
Overrun[d] with weeds and saltpits,
And a [e]perpetual desolation.
The residue of My people shall plunder them,
And the remnant of My people shall possess them.”
Because they have reproached and made arrogant threats
Against the people of the Lord of hosts.
For He will reduce to nothing all the gods of the earth;
People shall worship Him,
Each one from his place,
Indeed all the shores of the nations.
You shall be slain by My sword.”
Destroy Assyria,
And make Nineveh a desolation,
As dry as the wilderness.
Every beast of the nation.
Both the pelican and the bittern
Shall lodge on the capitals of her pillars;
Their voice shall sing in the windows;
Desolation shall be at the threshold;
For He will lay bare the cedar work.
That dwelt securely,
That said in her heart,
“I am it, and there is none besides me.”
How has she become a desolation,
A place for beasts to lie down!
Everyone who passes by her
Shall hiss and shake his fist.
II. БОГ ПРИЗЫВАЕТ ИУДЕЮ К ПОКАЯНИЮ (2:1−3)
Бог призывает народ необузданный (в др. переводах «бесстыдный») покаяться. По-видимому, в стихе 3 имеются в виду уцелевшие праведные иудеи. Если они взыщут Господа, то укроются в день гнева Господня.
III. ОБРЕЧЕННЫЕ НА ГИБЕЛЬ ЯЗЫЧЕСКИЕ НАРОДЫ (2:4−15)
A. Филистимляне (2:4−7)
В стихах 4−15 Софония предсказывает суд над народами, окружающими Иудею с запада, востока, юга и севера. Первой упоминается земля филистимская. Пророк также использует другое название этой нации: народ критский. Их города — Газа, Аскалон и Азот — будут покинуты и опустеют. Господь сотрет их с лица земли и отдаст всю страну Иудее, которая будет использовать ее в качестве пастбищ.
Б. Моавитяне и аммонитяне (2:8−11)
Далее следуют Моав и Аммон. Богу известны их высокомерные слова и превозношение над Его народом. Эти земли ожидает полное опустошение — остаток народа Божьего будет жить там. Стих 11 предвосхищает Тысячелетнее Царство, когда Господь истребит всех богов земли.
B. Эфиопия (2:12)
Эфиопия будет наказана Божьим мечом (вавилонским царем). Некоторые исследователи — например, Фейнберг — отождествляют «эфиоплян» и египтян.
«Судьба Эфиопии была тесно связана с Египтом, в котором правили эфиопские династии (см. Иер 46:9 и Иез 30:5, 9). Имеются все причины полагать, что здесь под термином «эфиопляне» подразумевается Египет.»
Г. Ассирия и в первую очередь Ниневия (2:13−15)
Навуходоносор уничтожит также и Ассирию. Ниневия станет убежищем для зверей и птиц, и всякий, проходя мимо нее, посвищет и махнет рукой.
