In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

На трэцім годзе цараваньня Ёакіма, цара Юдэйскага, прыйшоў Навухаданосар, цар Вавілонскі, да Ерусаліма і атачыў яго аблогаю.

And the Lord delivered Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the articles from the temple of God. These he carried off to the temple of his god in Babyloniaa and put in the treasure house of his god.

І аддаў Гасподзь у рукі ягоныя Ёакіма, цара Юдэйскага, і частку посудаў Божага дома, і ён адправіў іх у зямлю Сэнаар, у дом свайго бога, і ўнёс гэты посуд у скарбніцу бога свайго.

Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials, to bring into the king’s service some of the Israelites from the royal family and the nobility —

І сказаў цар Асфэназу, начальніку сваіх еўнухаў, каб ён з сыноў Ізраілевых, з роду царскага і княскага, прывёў

young men without any physical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for every kind of learning, well informed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in the king’s palace. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians.b

хлопчыкаў, у якіх няма ніякай цялеснай хібы, прыгожых сабою і цямных да ўсякай мудрасьці, і здатных да навук і кемлівых і здольных служыць у царскіх харомах, і каб навучыў іх кнігам і мове Халдэйскай.

The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king’s table. They were to be trained for three years, and after that they were to enter the king’s service.

І прызначыў ім цар штодзённую ежу з царскага стала і віно, якое сам піў, і загадаў выхоўваць іх тры гады, па сканчэньні якіх яны меліся стаць перад царом.

Among those who were chosen were some from Judah: Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah.

Сярод іх былі і зь Юдавых сыноў Данііл, Ананія, Місаіл і Азарыя.

The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.

І пераназваў іх начальнік еўнухаў — Данііла Валтасарам, Ананію Сэдрахам, Місаіла Місахам і Азарыю Аўдэнагам.

But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.

Данііл паклаў сабе на сэрца не апаганьвацца прысмакамі з царскага стала і віном, якое п’е цар, і таму прасіў у начальніка еўнухаў, каб не апаганьвацца яму.

Now God had caused the official to show favor and compassion to Daniel,

Бог даў Даніілу ласку і добрую прыхільнасьць начальніка еўнухаў;

but the official told Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned yourc food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”

і начальнік еўнухаў сказаў Даніілу: «баюся я гаспадара майго, цара, які сам вызначыў вам ежу і пітво: калі ён убачыць вашыя твары худзейшымі, чым у хлопчыкаў, вашых равесьнікаў, дык вы зробіце галаву маю вінаватаю перад царом».

Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah,

Тады сказаў Данііл Амэлсару, якога начальнік еўнухаў прыставіў да Данііла, Ананіі, Місаіла і Азарыя:

“Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink.

«зрабі выпрабаваньне рабам тваім: дзесяць дзён няхай даюць нам на ежу гародніну, а піць — ваду;

Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.”

і потым няхай явяцца перад табою нашыя твары і твары тых хлопчыкаў, якія кормяцца царскаю ежаю, і потым рабі з тваімі рабамі, як убачыш».

So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.

Той паслухаўся іх у гэтым і выпрабоўваў іх дзесяць дзён.

At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.

А як прайшло дзесяць дзён, твары іх былі прыгажэйшыя, і зь цела яны былі здаравейшыя за ўсіх тых хлопчыкаў, якія карміліся царскімі прысмакамі.

So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

Тады Амэлсар забіраў іхнюю ежу і віно на пітво, а даваў ім гародніну.

To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.

І даў Бог чатыром гэтым падлеткам веданьне і разуменьне ўсякай кнігі і мудрасьці, а Даніілу яшчэ даў разумець і ўсякія ўявы і сны.

At the end of the time set by the king to bring them into his service, the chief official presented them to Nebuchadnezzar.

Як мінуліся тыя дні, калі цар загадаў прывесьці іх, начальнік еўнухаў прывёў іх да Навухаданосара.

The king talked with them, and he found none equal to Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s service.

І цар гаварыў зь імі, і з усіх хлопчыкаў не знайшлося падобных на Данііла, Ананію, Місаіла і Азарыю, і пачалі яны служыць перад царом.

In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.

І ў кожнай справе мудрага ўразуменьня, пра што ні пытаўся ў іх цар, ён знаходзіў іх у дзесяць разоў вышэй за ўсіх чарадзеяў і заклінальнікаў, якія былі ва ўсім яго царстве.

And Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus.

І быў там Данііл да першага года цара Кіра.
