And it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man went from Bethlehem-Judah, to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons.

Zu der Zeit, als die Richter richteten, entstand eine Hungersnot im Lande. Und ein Mann von Bethlehem in Juda zog aus ins Land der Moabiter, um dort als Fremdling zu wohnen, mit seiner Frau und seinen beiden Söhnen.

And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem-Judah. And they came into the country of Moab, and continued there.

Der hieß Elimelech und seine Frau Noomi und seine beiden Söhne Machlon und Kiljon; die waren Efratiter aus Bethlehem in Juda. Und als sie ins Land der Moabiter gekommen waren, blieben sie dort.

And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.

Und Elimelech, Noomis Mann, starb, und sie blieb übrig mit ihren beiden Söhnen.

And they took them Moabitish wives; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the second Ruth: and they abode there about ten years.

Die nahmen moabitische Frauen; die eine hieß Orpa, die andere Rut. Und als sie ungefähr zehn Jahre dort gewohnt hatten,

And Mahlon and Chilion died also, both of them; and the woman was left of her two children and of her husband.

starben auch die beiden, Machlon und Kiljon, so daß die Frau beide Söhne und ihren Mann überlebte.

And she arose, she and her daughters-in-law, and returned from the fields of Moab; for she had heard in the fields of Moab how that Jehovah had visited his people to give them bread.

Da machte sie sich auf mit ihren beiden Schwiegertöchtern und zog aus dem Land der Moabiter wieder zurück; denn sie hatte erfahren im Moabiterland, daß der HERR sich seines Volkes angenommen und ihnen Brot gegeben hatte.

Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she had been, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah.

Und sie ging aus von dem Ort, wo sie gewesen war, und ihre beiden Schwiegertöchter mit ihr. Und als sie unterwegs waren, um ins Land Juda zurückzukehren,

And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, Go, return each to her mother's house. Jehovah deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead and with me.

sprach sie zu ihren beiden Schwiegertöchtern: Geht hin und kehrt um, eine jede ins Haus ihrer Mutter! Der HERR tue an euch Barmherzigkeit, wie ihr an den Toten und an mir getan habt.

Jehovah grant you that ye may find rest, each in the house of her husband. And she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice and wept.

Der HERR gebe euch, daß ihr Ruhe findet, eine jede in ihres Mannes Hause! Und sie küßte sie. Da erhoben sie ihre Stimme und weinten

And they said to her, We will certainly return with thee to thy people.

und sprachen zu ihr: Wir wollen mit dir zu deinem Volk gehen.

And Naomi said, Return, my daughters: why will ye go with me? Are there yet sons in my womb, that they could be your husbands?

Aber Noomi sprach: Kehrt um, meine Töchter! Warum wollt ihr mit mir gehen? Wie kann ich noch einmal Kinder in meinem Schoße haben, die eure Männer werden könnten?

Return, my daughters, go; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, should I even have a husband to-night, and should I also bear sons,

Kehrt um, meine Töchter, und geht hin; denn ich bin nun zu alt, um wieder einen Mann zu nehmen. Und wenn ich dächte: Ich habe noch Hoffnung! und diese Nacht einen Mann nehmen und Söhne gebären würde,

would ye wait on that account till they were grown? Would ye stay on that account from having husbands? No, my daughters, for I am in much more bitterness than you; for the hand of Jehovah is gone out against me.

wolltet ihr warten, bis sie groß würden? Wolltet ihr euch so lange einschließen und keinen Mann nehmen? Nicht doch, meine Töchter! Mein Los ist zu bitter für euch, denn des HERRN Hand ist gegen mich gewesen.

And they lifted up their voice and wept again. And Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clave to her.

Da erhoben sie ihre Stimme und weinten noch mehr. Und Orpa küßte ihre Schwiegermutter, Rut aber blieb bei ihr.

And she said, Behold, thy sister-in-law is gone back to her people and to her gods: return after thy sister-in-law.

Sie aber sprach: Siehe, deine Schwägerin ist umgekehrt zu ihrem Volk und zu ihrem Gott; kehre auch du um, deiner Schwägerin nach.

And Ruth said, Do not intreat me to leave thee, to return from [following] after thee; for whither thou goest I will go, and where thou lodgest I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God;

Rut antwortete: Rede mir nicht ein, daß ich dich verlassen und von dir umkehren sollte. Wo du hin gehst, da will ich auch hin gehen; wo du bleibst, da bleibe ich auch. Dein Volk ist mein Volk, und dein Gott ist mein Gott.

where thou diest will I die, and there will I be buried. Jehovah do so to me, and more also, if aught but death part me and thee!

Wo du stirbst, da sterbe ich auch, da will ich auch begraben werden. Der HERR tue mir dies und das, nur der Tod wird mich und dich scheiden.

And when she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, she left off speaking to her.

Als sie nun sah, daß sie festen Sinnes war, mit ihr zu gehen, ließ sie ab, ihr zuzureden.

And they two went until they came to Bethlehem. And it came to pass, when they came to Bethlehem, that all the city was moved about them, and the [women] said, Is this Naomi?

So gingen die beiden miteinander, bis sie nach Bethlehem kamen. Und als sie nach Bethlehem hineinkamen, erregte sich die ganze Stadt über sie, und die Frauen sprachen: Ist das die Noomi?

And she said to them, Call me not Naomi -- call me Mara; for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

Sie aber sprach zu ihnen: Nennt mich nicht Noomi, sondern Mara; denn der Allmächtige hat mir viel Bitteres angetan.

I went out full, and Jehovah has brought me home again empty. Why do ye call me Naomi, seeing Jehovah has brought me low, and the Almighty has afflicted me?

Voll zog ich aus, aber leer hat mich der HERR wieder heimgebracht. Warum nennt ihr mich denn Noomi, da doch der HERR gegen mich gesprochen und der Allmächtige mich betrübt hat?

So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the fields of Moab; and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of the barley-harvest.

Es war aber um die Zeit, da die Gerstenernte anging, als Noomi mit ihrer Schwiegertochter Rut, der Moabiterin, zurückkam vom Moabiterland nach Bethlehem.
