In the second year of Darius the king, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came by the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

Im zweiten Jahr des Königs Dariusⓐ, im sechsten Monat, am ersten Tag des Monats, geschah das Wort des HERRN durch den Propheten Haggaiⓑ zu Serubbabel, dem Sohn des Schealtiëlⓒ, dem Statthalter[1] von Juda, und zu Jeschua[2], dem Sohn des Jozadakⓓ, dem Hohenpriester:

“Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘This people says, “The time has not come, even the time for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt.”’”

So spricht der HERR der Heerscharen: Dieses Volk sagt: Die Zeit ist ‹noch› nicht gekommen, das Haus des HERRN zu bauen[3]ⓔ.

Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying,

Und das Wort des HERRN geschah durch den Propheten Haggai:

“Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?”

Ist es für euch selber ‹an der› Zeitⓕ, in euren getäfelten Häusern zu wohnen, während dieses Haus verödet daliegt?

Now therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts, “Consider your ways!

Und nun, so spricht der HERR der Heerscharen: Richtet euer Herz auf eure Wegeⓖ!

“You have sown much, but harvest little; you eat, but there is not enough to be satisfied; you drink, but there is not enough to become drunk; you put on clothing, but no one is warm enough; and he who earns, earns wages to put into a purse with holes.”

Ihr habt viel gesät, aber wenig eingebrachtⓗ; ihr esst, aber werdet nicht satt[4]ⓘ; ihr trinkt, aber seid noch durstig[5]; ihr kleidet euch, aber es wird keinem warm[6]; und der Lohnarbeiter erwirbt Lohn in einen durchlöcherten Beutelⓙ.

Thus says the LORD of hosts, “Consider your ways!

So spricht der HERR der Heerscharen: Richtet euer Herz auf eure Wegeⓚ!

“Go up to the mountains, bring wood and rebuild the temple, that I may be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the LORD.

Steigt hinauf ins Gebirge und bringt Holz herbei und baut das Hausⓛ! Dann werde ich Gefallen daran haben und mich verherrlichen[7], spricht der HERR.

“You look for much, but behold, it comes to little; when you bring it home, I blow it away. Why?” declares the LORD of hosts, “Because of My house which lies desolate, while each of you runs to his own house.

Ihr habt nach vielem ausgeschaut, und siehe, es wurde wenig. Und brachtet ihr es heim, so blies ich hineinⓜ. Weshalb das?, spricht der HERR[8] der Heerscharen. Wegen meines Hauses, das verödet daliegt, während ihr lauft, jeder für sein eigenes Haus.

“Therefore, because of you the sky has withheld its dew and the earth has withheld its produce.

Deshalb hat um euretwillen[9] der Himmel den Tau zurückgehalten, und die Erde hat ihren Ertrag zurückgehaltenⓝ.

“I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of your hands.”

Und ich habe eine Dürre gerufen über das Land und über die Berge und über das Korn und über den Wein und über das Öl und über das, was der Erdboden hervorbringt, und über die Menschen und über das Vieh und über allen Arbeitsertrag der Händeⓞ.

Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people showed reverence for the LORD.

Da hörten Serubbabel, der Sohn des Schealtiël, und der Hohepriester Jeschua, der Sohn des Jozadak, und der ganze Rest des Volkes auf die Stimme des HERRN, ihres Gottes, und auf die Worte des Propheten Haggai, so wie der HERR, ihr Gott, ihn gesandt hatte, und das Volk fürchtete sich vor dem HERRN.

Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke by the commission of the LORD to the people saying, “ ‘I am with you,’ declares the LORD.”

Da sprach Haggai, der Bote des HERRN, im Auftrag[10] des HERRN zum Volk: Ich bin mit euchⓟ, spricht der HERR[11].

So the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

Und der HERR erweckte den Geist Serubbabels, des Sohnes Schealtiëls, des Statthalters[12] von Juda, und den Geist Jeschuas, des Sohnes Jozadaks, des Hohenpriesters, und den Geist des ganzen Restes des Volkes, so dass sie kamen und sich an die Arbeit am Haus des HERRN der Heerscharen, ihres Gottes, machtenⓠ,

on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month in the second year of Darius the king.
