Now these are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob; they came each one with his household:

Und dies sind die Namen der Söhne Israel, die nach Ägypten kamen — mit Jakob kamen sie, jeder mit seinem Haus[1]ⓐ:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi and Judah;

Ruben, Simeon, Levi und Juda;

Issachar, Zebulun and Benjamin;

Issaschar, Sebulon und Benjamin;

Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

Dan und Naftali, Gad und Asserⓑ.

All the persons who came from the loins of Jacob were seventy in number, but Joseph was already in Egypt.

Und ‹die Zahl› aller Seelen, die aus Jakobs Schoß hervorgegangen waren[2], betrug siebzig[3] Seelenⓒ. Josef aber war ‹schon› in Ägyptenⓓ.

Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.

Und Josef starbⓔ und alle seine Brüder und jene ganze Generationⓕ.

But the sons of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly, and multiplied, and became exceedingly mighty, so that the land was filled with them.

Die Söhne Israel aber waren fruchtbar und wimmelten und mehrten sich und wurden sehr, sehr stark[4], und das Land wurde voll von ihnenⓖ.

Now a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

Da trat ein neuer König ‹die Herrschaft› über Ägypten an, der Josef nicht ‹mehr› kannteⓗ.

He said to his people, “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are more and mightier than we.

Der sagte zu seinem Volk: Siehe, das Volk der Söhne Israel ist zahlreicher und stärker als wirⓘ.

“Come, let us deal wisely with them, or else they will multiply and in the event of war, they will also join themselves to those who hate us, and fight against us and depart from the land.”

Auf, lasst uns klug gegen es vorgehenⓙ, damit es sich nicht noch weiter vermehrt! Sonst könnte es geschehen, wenn Krieg ausbricht, dass es sich auch ‹noch› zu unseren Feinden schlägt und gegen uns kämpft und ‹dann› aus dem Land hinaufzieht[5]ⓚ.

So they appointed taskmasters over them to afflict them with hard labor. And they built for Pharaoh storage cities, Pithom and Raamses.

Daher setzten sie Arbeitsaufseher[6] über es, um es mit ihren Lastarbeiten zu drückenⓛ. Und es baute für den Pharao Vorratsstädte: Pitom und Ramsesⓜ.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out, so that they were in dread of the sons of Israel.

Aber je mehr sie es bedrückten, desto mehr nahm es zu; und so breitete es sich ausⓝ, so dass sie ein Grauen erfasste vor den Söhnen Israelⓞ.

The Egyptians compelled the sons of Israel to labor rigorously;

Da zwangen die Ägypter die Söhne Israel mit Gewalt zur Arbeitⓟ

and they made their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the field, all their labors which they rigorously imposed on them.

und machten ihnen das Leben bitter durch harte Arbeitⓠ an Lehm und an Ziegeln und durch allerlei Arbeit auf dem Feld, mit[7] all ihrer Arbeit, zu der sie sie mit Gewalt zwangen.ⓡ

Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other was named Puah;

Und der König von Ägypten sprach zu den hebräischen Hebammen, von denen die eine Schifra und die andere Pua hieß,

and he said, “When you are helping the Hebrew women to give birth and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

und sagte: Wenn ihr den Hebräerinnen bei der Geburt helft und bei der Entbindung[8] seht, dass es ein Sohn ist, dann tötet ihn, wenn es aber eine Tochter ist, dann mag sie am Leben bleibenⓢ.

But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded them, but let the boys live.

Aber weil die Hebammen Gott fürchtetenⓣ, taten sie nicht, wie ihnen der König von Ägypten gesagt hatte, sondern ließen die Jungen am Lebenⓤ.

So the king of Egypt called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, and let the boys live?”

Da rief der König von Ägypten die Hebammen ‹zu sich› und sagte zu ihnen: Warum habt ihr das getan, dass ihr die Jungen am Leben gelassen habt?

The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife can get to them.”

Die Hebammen antworteten dem Pharao: Ja, die hebräischen Frauen sind nicht wie die ägyptischen, denn sie sind lebenskräftig; ehe die Hebamme zu ihnen kommt, haben sie ‹schon› geboren.

So God was good to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very mighty.

Und Gott tat den Hebammen Gutesⓥ, und das Volk vermehrte sich und wurde sehr stark[9].

Because the midwives feared God, He established households for them.

Und weil die Hebammen Gott fürchteten, geschah es, dass er ihnen Nachkommen schenkte[10]ⓦ.

Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you are to cast into the Nile, and every daughter you are to keep alive.”

Da gebot der Pharao seinem ganzen Volk: Jeden Sohn, der geboren wirdⓧ, sollt ihr in den Nil werfenⓨ, jede Tochter aber sollt ihr am Leben lassenⓩ!
