During the third year of King Jehoiakim’s reign in Judah,a King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

У трэці год царавання цара Юдэйскага Ёакіма падышоў Набукаданосар, цар Бабілонскі, пад Ерузалім і абклаў яго;

The Lord gave him victory over King Jehoiakim of Judah and permitted him to take some of the sacred objects from the Temple of God. So Nebuchadnezzar took them back to the land of Babyloniab and placed them in the treasure-house of his god.

і Госпад аддаў у яго рукі цара Юдэйскага Ёакіма, і частку пасудзін дома Божага, і іх забраў ён у зямлю Сэнаар, у дом багоў сваіх, і памясціў пасудзіны ў дом скарбоўні багоў сваіх.

Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, his chief of staff, to bring to the palace some of the young men of Judah’s royal family and other noble families, who had been brought to Babylon as captives.

І цар загадаў Асфаназу, кіраўніку сваіх еўнухаў, каб прывёў з ізраэльцаў і з роду царскага, і з правіцеляў

“Select only strong, healthy, and good-looking young men,” he said. “Make sure they are well versed in every branch of learning, are gifted with knowledge and good judgment, and are suited to serve in the royal palace. Train these young men in the language and literature of Babylon.c”

юнакоў без аніякай заганы, прыгожых выглядам і вывучаных ва ўсякай мудрасці, маючых веды, і выхаваных, і здатных да службы ў царскім палацы, і каб навучыць іх кнігам і мове халдэйцаў.

The king assigned them a daily ration of food and wine from his own kitchens. They were to be trained for three years, and then they would enter the royal service.

І цар выдзеліў ім штодзённую порцыю ад страў царскіх і ад віна, якое сам піў, каб былі яны ўзгадаваны праз тры гады і пасля служылі цару.

Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were four of the young men chosen, all from the tribe of Judah.

Такім чынам, з сыноў юдэйскіх былі сярод іх Даніэль, Ананія, Місаэль і Азарыя.

The chief of staff renamed them with these Babylonian names: Daniel was called Belteshazzar. Hananiah was called Shadrach. Mishael was called Meshach. Azariah was called Abednego.

І наглядчык еўнухаў надаў ім імёны: Даніэлю — Балтасар, і Ананію — Сэдрак, Місаэлю — Місак, і Азарыю — Абдэнага.

But Daniel was determined not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief of staff for permission not to eat these unacceptable foods.

Даніэль жа рашыў у сэрцы сваім, каб не апаганьвацца стравамі царскімі, ані віном, якое цар піў, ды папрасіў наглядчыка еўнухаў, каб не апаганьвацца.

Now God had given the chief of staff both respect and affection for Daniel.

А абдарыў Бог Даніэля ласкаю і міласэрнасцю перад наглядчыкам еўнухаў,

But he responded, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has ordered that you eat this food and wine. If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths your age, I am afraid the king will have me beheaded.”

і кіраўнік еўнухаў сказаў Даніэлю: «Баюся я гаспадара майго, цара, калі ўбачыць ён вашы твары худзейшымі, чым у іншых юнакоў у вашых гадах; калі гэтак, то вы выставіце маю галаву на небяспеку перад царом».

Daniel spoke with the attendant who had been appointed by the chief of staff to look after Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

І Даніэль сказаў вартаўніку, якога паставіў кіраўнік еўнухаў над Даніэлем, Ананіем, Місаэлем і Азарыем:

“Please test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water,” Daniel said.

«Прашу, аддай нас, паслугачоў тваіх, дзесяцідзённаму выпрабаванню: хай даюць нам гародніну есці і ваду піць;

“At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king’s food. Then make your decision in light of what you see.”

і ўбачыш, як мы выглядаем і як выглядаюць юнакі, якія ядуць стравы царскія, і зробіш з паслугачамі сваімі паводле таго, што ўбачыш».

The attendant agreed to Daniel’s suggestion and tested them for ten days.

Ён, выслухаўшы гэтыя словы, выставіў іх на дзесяцідзённае выпрабаванне.

At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king.

Па дзесяці ж днях аблічча іх было лепшым і здаравейшым, чым у юнакоў, якія елі ежу царскую.

So after that, the attendant fed them only vegetables instead of the food and wine provided for the others.

А вартаўнік браў іх ежу і віно і падаваў ім гародніну.

God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom. And God gave Daniel the special ability to interpret the meanings of visions and dreams.

І надзяліў Бог гэтых чатырох юнакоў ведамі і ўменнем ва ўсякім пісанні і мудрасці, Даніэль жа меў разуменне ўсякіх з’яў і сноў.

When the training period ordered by the king was completed, the chief of staff brought all the young men to King Nebuchadnezzar.

Дык калі прайшоў час, што ўстанавіў цар, каб іх прадставіць, наглядчык еўнухаў прывёў іх да Набукаданосара.

The king talked with them, and no one impressed him as much as Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. So they entered the royal service.

І калі цар размаўляў з імі, нельга было знайсці паміж іх усіх нікога, роўнага Даніэлю, Ананію, Місаэлю і Азарыю; ды сталі на службу пры цару.

Whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in his entire kingdom.

І ўсякае слова мудрасці і разумення, якое ён атрымаў ад іх, цар знайшоў у іх дзесяцікратна лепшым, чым словы ўсіх прадказальнікаў і варажбітоў, якія былі ва ўсім яго царстве.

Daniel remained in the royal service until the first year of the reign of King Cyrus.d

А прабываў там Даніэль аж да першага года цара Кіра.
