Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

Und das Wort des HERRN geschah zu Jona, dem Sohn des Amittaiⓐ:

“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me.”

Mache dich auf, geh nach Niniveⓑ, der großen Stadtⓒ, und verkündige gegen sie[1]! Denn ihre Bosheit ist vor mich aufgestiegenⓓ.

But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

Aber Jona machte sich auf, um nach Tarsis[2]ⓔ zu fliehenⓕ, weg vom Angesicht des HERRN. Und er ging nach Jafo[3]ⓖ hinab, fand ein Schiff, das nach Tarsis fuhr, gab den Fahrpreis dafür und stieg hineinⓗ, um mit ihnen nach Tarsis zu fahren, weg vom Angesicht des HERRN.

But the Lord [a]sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.

Da warf der HERR einen gewaltigen Wind auf das Meer, und es entstand ein großer Sturm auf dem Meerⓘ, so dass das Schiff zu zerbrechen drohte.

Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten [b]the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.

Da fürchteten sich die Seeleute und schrien um Hilfe, jeder zu seinem Gottⓙ. Und sie warfen die Geräte, die im Schiff waren, ins Meer, um ihre schwierige Lage zu erleichtern[4]ⓚ. Jona aber war in den untersten Schiffsraum[5] hinabgestiegen, hatte sich hingelegt und schlief fest.

So the captain came to him, and said to him, “What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”

Da trat der Kapitän[6] an ihn heran und sagte zu ihm: Was ist mit dir, du Schläferⓛ? Steh auf, ruf deinen Gott an! Vielleicht wird der Gott sich auf uns besinnen, so dass wir nicht umkommen.

And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

Und sie sagten einer zum anderen[7]: Kommt und lasst uns Lose werfen, damit wir erkennen, um wessentwillen dieses Unglück uns ‹trifft›! Und sie warfen Lose, und das Los fiel auf Jonaⓜ.

Then they said to him, “Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?”

Da sagten sie zu ihm: Teile uns doch mit, durch wessen ‹Schuld› dieses Unglück uns ‹trifft›ⓝ! Was ist dein Beruf[8], und woher kommst du? Was ist dein Land, und von welchem Volk bist du?

So he said to them, “I am a Hebrew; and I fear [c]the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.”

Und er sagte zu ihnen: Ich bin ein Hebräerⓞ, und ich fürchte den HERRN, den Gott des Himmelsⓟ, der das Meer und das trockene ‹Land› gemacht hatⓠ.

Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, “Why have you done this?” For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.

Da fürchteten sich die Männer mit großer Furcht und sagten zu ihm: Was hast du da getanⓡ! Die Männer hatten nämlich erfahren, dass er vor dem Angesicht des HERRN auf der Flucht war, denn er hatte es ihnen mitgeteilt.

Then they said to him, “What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?” — for the sea was growing more tempestuous.

Und sie sagten zu ihm: Was sollen wir ‹mit› dir tunⓢ, damit das Meer uns in Ruhe lässt[9]? — Denn das Meer wurde immer stürmischer.

And he said to them, “Pick me up and [d]throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.”

Da sagte er zu ihnen: Nehmt mich und werft mich ins Meer! Dann wird das Meer euch in Ruhe lassen[10]; denn ich habe erkannt, dass dieser große Sturm um meinetwillen über euch ‹gekommen istⓣ›.

Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them.

Und die Männer ruderten mit aller Kraft[11], um ‹das Schiff› ans trockene ‹Land› zurückzubringen. Aber sie konnten es nicht, weil das Meer immer stürmischer gegen sie anging.

Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, “We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man’s life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You.”

Da riefen sie zum HERRN und sagten: Ach, HERR, lass uns doch nicht umkommen um der Seele dieses Mannes willen[12] und bringe nicht unschuldiges Blut über uns[13]ⓤ! Denn du, HERR, hast getan, wie es dir gefallen hat.

So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.

Und sie nahmen Jona und warfen ihn ins Meer. Da ließ das Meer ab[14] von seinem Wütenⓥ.

Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.

Und die Männer fürchteten den HERRN mit großer Furchtⓦ, und sie brachten dem HERRN Schlachtopfer dar und gelobten ‹ihm› Gelübde.

Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
