This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy. I am writing to God’s church in Corinth and to all of his holy people throughout Greece.a

Paulus, ein Apostel Christi Jesu durch den Willen Gottes, und Timotheus, unser Bruder, an die Gemeinde Gottes in Korinth samt allen Heiligen in ganz Achaja:

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Gnade sei mit euch und Friede von Gott, unserm Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Christus!

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.

Gelobt sei Gott, der Vater unseres Herrn Jesus Christus, der Vater der Barmherzigkeit und Gott allen Trostes,

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

der uns tröstet in aller unserer Trübsal, damit wir auch trösten können, die in allerlei Trübsal sind, mit dem Trost, mit dem wir selber getröstet werden von Gott.

For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.

Denn wie die Leiden Christi reichlich über uns kommen, so werden wir auch reichlich getröstet durch Christus.

Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.

Haben wir aber Trübsal, so geschieht es euch zu Trost und Heil. Haben wir Trost, so geschieht es zu eurem Trost, der sich wirksam erweist, wenn ihr mit Geduld dieselben Leiden ertragt, die auch wir leiden.

We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.

Und unsre Hoffnung steht fest für euch, weil wir wissen: wie ihr an den Leiden teilhabt, so werdet ihr auch am Trost teilhaben.

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters,b about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.

Denn wir wollen euch, liebe Brüder, nicht verschweigen die Bedrängnis, die uns in der Provinz Asien widerfahren ist, wo wir über die Maßen beschwert waren und über unsere Kraft, so daß wir auch am Leben verzagten

In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.

und es bei uns selbst für beschlossen hielten, wir müßten sterben. Das geschah aber, damit wir unser Vertrauen nicht auf uns selbst setzten, sondern auf Gott, der die Toten auferweckt,

And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.

der uns aus solcher Todesnot errettet hat und erretten wird. Auf ihn hoffen wir, er werde uns auch hinfort erretten.

And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.

Dazu helft auch ihr durch eure Fürbitte für uns, damit unsertwegen für die Gabe, die uns gegeben ist, durch viele Personen viel Dank dargebracht werde.

We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holinessc and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you.

Denn dies ist unser Ruhm: das Zeugnis unseres Gewissens, daß wir in Einfalt und göttlicher Lauterkeit, nicht in fleischlicher Weisheit, sondern in der Gnade Gottes unser Leben in der Welt geführt haben, und das vor allem bei euch.

Our letters have been straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and nothing you can’t understand. I hope someday you will fully understand us,

Denn wir schreiben euch nichts anderes, als was ihr lest und auch versteht. Ich hoffe aber, ihr werdet es noch völlig verstehen,

even if you don’t understand us now. Then on the day when the Lord Jesusd returns, you will be proud of us in the same way we are proud of you.

wie ihr uns zum Teil auch schon verstanden habt, nämlich, daß wir euer Ruhm sind, wie auch ihr unser Ruhm seid am Tage unseres Herrn Jesus.

Since I was so sure of your understanding and trust, I wanted to give you a double blessing by visiting you twice —

Und in solchem Vertrauen wollte ich zunächst zu euch kommen, damit ihr abermals eine Wohltat empfinget.

first on my way to Macedonia and again when I returned from Macedonia.e Then you could send me on my way to Judea.

Von euch aus wollte ich nach Mazedonien reisen, aus Mazedonien wieder zu euch kommen und mich von euch geleiten lassen nach Judäa.

You may be asking why I changed my plan. Do you think I make my plans carelessly? Do you think I am like people of the world who say “Yes” when they really mean “No”?

Bin ich etwa leichtfertig gewesen, als ich dies wollte? Oder ist mein Vorhaben fleischlich, so daß das Ja Ja bei mir auch ein Nein Nein ist?

As surely as God is faithful, our word to you does not waver between “Yes” and “No.”

Gott ist mein Zeuge, daß unser Wort an euch nicht Ja und Nein zugleich ist.

For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas,f Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says.

Denn der Sohn Gottes, Jesus Christus, der unter euch durch uns gepredigt worden ist, durch mich und Silvanus und Timotheus, der war nicht Ja und Nein, sondern es war Ja in ihm.

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.

Denn auf alle Gottesverheißungen ist in ihm das Ja; darum sprechen wir auch durch ihn das Amen, Gott zum Lobe.

It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us,

Gott ist's aber, der uns fest macht samt euch in Christus und uns gesalbt

and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.

und versiegelt und in unsre Herzen als Unterpfand den Geist gegeben hat.

Now I call upon God as my witness that I am telling the truth. The reason I didn’t return to Corinth was to spare you from a severe rebuke.

Ich rufe aber Gott zum Zeugen an bei meiner Seele, daß ich euch schonen wollte und darum nicht wieder nach Korinth gekommen bin.

But that does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you how to put your faith into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm.

Nicht daß wir Herren wären über euren Glauben, sondern wir sind Gehilfen eurer Freude; denn ihr steht im Glauben.
