This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy. I am writing to God’s church in Corinth and to all of his holy people throughout Greece.a

Paulus, Apostel[1] Christi Jesu durch Gottes Willenⓐ, und Timotheusⓑ, der Bruder, der Gemeinde[2] Gottes, die in Korinthⓒ ist, samt allen Heiligen, die in ganz Achaja sind:

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Gnade euch und Friede von Gott, unserem Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Christusⓓ!

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.

Gepriesen sei der Gottⓔ und Vater unseres Herrn Jesus Christusⓕ, der Vater der Erbarmungen und Gott allen Trostesⓖ,

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.

der uns tröstet[3] in all unserer Bedrängnisⓗ, damit wir die trösten können, die in allerlei Bedrängnis sind, durch den Trost, mit dem wir selbst von Gott getröstet werden.

For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.

Denn wie die Leiden des Christus überreich auf uns kommenⓘ, so ist auch durch den Christus unser Trost überreich.

Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.

Sei es aber, dass wir bedrängt werden, so ist es zu eurem Trost und Heil[4]; sei es, dass wir getröstet werden, so ist es zu eurem Trost, der wirksam wird im ‹geduldigen› Ertragen[5] derselben Leiden, die auch wir leidenⓙ.

We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.

Und unsere Hoffnung für euch steht fest, da wir wissen, dass, wie ihr der Leiden teilhaftig seid, so auch des Trostes.

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters,b about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.

Denn wir wollen euch nicht in Unkenntnis lassen, Brüderⓚ, über unsere Bedrängnis, die uns in Asien[6] widerfahren istⓛ, dass wir übermäßig beschwert wurden, über Vermögen, so dass wir sogar am Leben verzweifelten.

In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.

Wir selbst aber hatten in uns selbstⓜ ‹schon› das Urteil des Todes erhalten, damit wir nicht auf uns selbst vertrauten, sondern auf Gott, der die Toten auferwecktⓝ.

And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.

Und der hat uns aus so großer Todesgefahr[7] gerettet und wird uns retten; auf ihn hoffen wir, dass er uns auch ferner retten werdeⓞ;

And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.

wobei auch ihr durch das Gebet für uns mitwirktⓟ, damit von vielen Personen für das uns ‹verliehene› Gnadengeschenk[8] gedankt werde, durch viele für uns.

We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holinessc and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you.

Denn unser Rühmen ist dies: das Zeugnis unseres Gewissensⓠ, dass wir in Einfalt[9] und Lauterkeit Gottesⓡ, nicht in fleischlicher Weisheitⓢ, sondern in der Gnade Gottes gewandelt sind in der Welt, besonders[10] aber bei euchⓣ.

Our letters have been straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and nothing you can’t understand. I hope someday you will fully understand us,

Denn wir schreiben euch nichts anderes, als was ihr lest oder auch erkennt; ich hoffe aber, dass ihr bis ans Ende erkennen werdet,

even if you don’t understand us now. Then on the day when the Lord Jesusd returns, you will be proud of us in the same way we are proud of you.

wie ihr auch uns zum Teil erkannt habt, dass wir euer Ruhm sindⓤ, so wie auch ihr der unsrige seid am Tag unseres Herrn Jesusⓥ.

Since I was so sure of your understanding and trust, I wanted to give you a double blessing by visiting you twice —

Und in diesem Vertrauen wollte ich vorher zu euch kommenⓦ, damit ihr eine zweite Gnade hättet,

first on my way to Macedonia and again when I returned from Macedonia.e Then you could send me on my way to Judea.

und über euch nach Mazedonien reisen und wieder von Mazedonien zu euch kommen und von euch nach Judäa geleitet werdenⓧ.

You may be asking why I changed my plan. Do you think I make my plans carelessly? Do you think I am like people of the world who say “Yes” when they really mean “No”?

Habe ich nun, indem ich mir dieses vornahm, etwa leichtfertig gehandelt? Oder was ich mir vornehme, nehme ich mir das nach dem Fleisch vor, damit bei mir das Ja-ja und das Nein-nein ‹gleichzeitig› wärenⓨ?

As surely as God is faithful, our word to you does not waver between “Yes” and “No.”

Gott aber ist treu ‹und bürgt dafür›, dass unser Wort an euch nicht Ja und Nein ‹zugleich› ist.

For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas,f Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says.

Denn der Sohn Gottes, Christus Jesus, der unter euch durch uns gepredigt worden istⓩ, durch mich und Silvanus[11] und Timotheusⓐ, war nicht Ja und Nein, sondern in ihm ist ein Ja geschehen.

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.

Denn so viele Verheißungen Gottes es gibt, in ihm ist das Ja, deshalb auch durch ihn das Amen[12]ⓑ, Gott zur Ehre durch uns.

It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us,

Der uns aber mit euch festigt in Christusⓒ und uns gesalbt hat, ist Gottⓓ,

and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.

der uns auch versiegeltⓔ und die Anzahlung des Geistes in unsere Herzen gegeben hatⓕ.

Now I call upon God as my witness that I am telling the truth. The reason I didn’t return to Corinth was to spare you from a severe rebuke.

Ich aber rufe Gott zum Zeugen an gegen meine Seeleⓖ, dass ich, um euch zu schonen, noch nicht nach Korinth gekommen binⓗ.

But that does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you how to put your faith into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm.

Nicht dass wir über euren Glauben herrschenⓘ, sondern wir sind Mitarbeiter an eurer Freudeⓙ; denn ihr steht durch den Glaubenⓚ.
