This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy. I am writing to God’s church in Corinth and to all of his holy people throughout Greece.a
 
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the church of God which is at Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia:

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
 
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.
 
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort,

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
 
who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any [a]trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower us with his comfort through Christ.
 
For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our [b]consolation also abounds through Christ.

Even when we are weighed down with troubles, it is for your comfort and salvation! For when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly comfort you. Then you can patiently endure the same things we suffer.
 
Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

We are confident that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in the comfort God gives us.
 
And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.

We think you ought to know, dear brothers and sisters,b about the trouble we went through in the province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never live through it.
 
For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our [c]trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life.

In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, who raises the dead.
 
Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead,

And he did rescue us from mortal danger, and he will rescue us again. We have placed our confidence in him, and he will continue to rescue us.
 
who delivered us from so great a death, and [d]does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us,

And you are helping us by praying for us. Then many people will give thanks because God has graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
 
you also helping together in prayer for us, that thanks may be given by many persons on [e]our behalf for the gift granted to us through many.

We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have lived with a God-given holinessc and sincerity in all our dealings. We have depended on God’s grace, not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted ourselves before the world, and especially toward you.
 
For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in [f]simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.

Our letters have been straightforward, and there is nothing written between the lines and nothing you can’t understand. I hope someday you will fully understand us,
 
For we are not writing any other things to you than what you read or understand. Now I trust you will understand, even to the end

even if you don’t understand us now. Then on the day when the Lord Jesusd returns, you will be proud of us in the same way we are proud of you.
 
(as also you have understood us in part), that we are your boast as you also are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Since I was so sure of your understanding and trust, I wanted to give you a double blessing by visiting you twice —
 
And in this confidence I intended to come to you before, that you might have a second benefit —

first on my way to Macedonia and again when I returned from Macedonia.e Then you could send me on my way to Judea.
 
to pass by way of you to Macedonia, to come again from Macedonia to you, and be helped by you on my way to Judea.

You may be asking why I changed my plan. Do you think I make my plans carelessly? Do you think I am like people of the world who say “Yes” when they really mean “No”?
 
Therefore, when I was planning this, did I do it lightly? Or the things I plan, do I plan according to the flesh, that with me there should be Yes, Yes, and No, No?

As surely as God is faithful, our word to you does not waver between “Yes” and “No.”
 
But as God is faithful, our [g]word to you was not Yes and No.

For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas,f Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says.
 
For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us — by me, Silvanus, and Timothy — was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes.

For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.
 
For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for Christ. He has commissioned us,
 
Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God,

and he has identified us as his own by placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts as the first installment that guarantees everything he has promised us.
 
who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

Now I call upon God as my witness that I am telling the truth. The reason I didn’t return to Corinth was to spare you from a severe rebuke.
 
Moreover I call God as witness against my soul, that to spare you I came no more to Corinth.

But that does not mean we want to dominate you by telling you how to put your faith into practice. We want to work together with you so you will be full of joy, for it is by your own faith that you stand firm.
 
Not that we [h]have dominion over your faith, but are fellow workers for your joy; for by faith you stand.
