This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abrahama:

ⓐ Buch des Ursprungs[1]ⓑ Jesu Christi, des Sohnes Davidsⓒ, des Sohnes Abrahamsⓓ.

Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac was the father of Jacob. Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.

Abraham zeugte Isaakⓔ, Isaak aber zeugte Jakobⓕ, Jakob aber zeugte Juda und seine Brüderⓖ,

Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar). Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron was the father of Ram.b

Juda aber zeugte Perez und Serach von der Tamarⓗ, Perez aber zeugte Hezron, Hezron aber zeugte Ram,

Ram was the father of Amminadab. Amminadab was the father of Nahshon. Nahshon was the father of Salmon.

Ram aber zeugte Amminadab, Amminadab aber zeugte Nachschon, Nachschon aber zeugte Salmon,

Salmon was the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab). Boaz was the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth). Obed was the father of Jesse.

Salmon aber zeugte Boasⓘ von der Rahabⓙ, Boas aber zeugte Obed von der Rutⓚ, Obed aber zeugte Isaiⓛ,

Jesse was the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah).

Isai aber zeugte David, den Königⓜ, David aber zeugte Salomo von der ‹Frau› des Uriaⓝ,

Solomon was the father of Rehoboam. Rehoboam was the father of Abijah. Abijah was the father of Asa.c

Salomo aber zeugte Rehabeamⓞ, Rehabeam aber zeugte Abijaⓟ, Abija aber zeugte Asa[2]ⓠ,

Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat. Jehoshaphat was the father of Jehoram.d Jehoram was the fathere of Uzziah.

Asa[3] aber zeugte Joschafatⓡ, Joschafat aber zeugte Joramⓢ, Joram aber zeugte Usijaⓣ,

Uzziah was the father of Jotham. Jotham was the father of Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.

Usija aber zeugte Jotamⓤ, Jotam aber zeugte Ahasⓥ, Ahas aber zeugte Hiskiaⓦ,

Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh. Manasseh was the father of Amon.f Amon was the father of Josiah.

Hiskia aber zeugte Manasseⓧ, Manasse aber zeugte Amon[4]ⓨ, Amon[5] aber zeugte Josiaⓩ,

Josiah was the father of Jehoiaching and his brothers (born at the time of the exile to Babylon).

Josia aber zeugte Jojachinⓐ und seine Brüder um die Zeit der Wegführung nach Babylonⓑ.

After the Babylonian exile: Jehoiachin was the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.

Nach der Wegführung nach Babylon aber zeugte Jojachin Schealtiël, Schealtiël aber zeugte Serubbabelⓒ,

Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud. Abiud was the father of Eliakim. Eliakim was the father of Azor.

Serubbabel aber zeugte Abihud, Abihud aber zeugte Eljakim, Eljakim aber zeugte Asor,

Azor was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Akim. Akim was the father of Eliud.

Asor aber zeugte Zadok, Zadok aber zeugte Achim, Achim aber zeugte Eliud,

Eliud was the father of Eleazar. Eleazar was the father of Matthan. Matthan was the father of Jacob.

Eliud aber zeugte Eleasar, Eleasar aber zeugte Mattan, Mattan aber zeugte Jakob,

Jacob was the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Mary gave birth to Jesus, who is called the Messiah.

Jakob aber zeugte Josef, den Mann Mariasⓓ, von welcher Jesus geboren wurde, der Christus[6] genannt wirdⓔ.

All those listed above include fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah.

So sind nun alle Geschlechter von Abraham bis auf David vierzehn Geschlechter und von David bis zur Wegführung nach Babylon vierzehn Geschlechter und von der Wegführung nach Babylon bis auf den Christus vierzehn Geschlechter.

This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the power of the Holy Spirit.

ⓕ Mit dem Ursprung[7] Jesu Christi verhielt es sich aber so: Als nämlich Maria, seine Mutter, dem Josef verlobt war, wurde sie, ehe sie zusammengekommen waren, schwanger befunden von dem Heiligen Geistⓖ.

Joseph, to whom she was engaged, was a righteous man and did not want to disgrace her publicly, so he decided to break the engagementh quietly.

Josef aber, ihr Mann, der gerecht war und sie nicht öffentlich bloßstellen[8] wollteⓗ, gedachte sie heimlich zu entlassenⓘ.

As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Während er dies aber überlegte, siehe, da erschien ihm ein Engel des Herrnⓙ im Traumⓚ und sprach: Josef, Sohn Davids, fürchte dich nicht, Maria, deine Frau, zu dir zu nehmen! Denn das in ihr Gezeugte ist von dem Heiligen Geist.

And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus,i for he will save his people from their sins.”

Und sie wird einen Sohn gebären, und du sollst seinen Namen Jesus nennenⓛ, denn er wird sein Volkⓜ retten von seinen[9] Sündenⓝ.

All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet:

Dies alles geschah aber, damit erfüllt würde, was von dem Herrn geredet ist durch den Propheten, der spricht:

“Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel,j which means ‘God is with us.’”

«Siehe, die Jungfrau wird schwanger sein und einen Sohn gebären, und sie werden seinen Namen Emmanuel[10] nennen»ⓞ, was übersetzt ist: Gott mit unsⓟ.

When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife.

Josef aber, vom Schlaf erwacht, tat, wie ihm der Engel des Herrn befohlen hatte, und nahm seine Frau zu sich;

But he did not have sexual relations with her until her son was born. And Joseph named him Jesus.

und er erkannte sie nicht, bis sie einen Sohn[11] geboren hatteⓠ; und er nannte seinen Namen Jesusⓡ.
