The word of the Lord that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, during the reign of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:

Dies ist das Wort des HERRN, das geschah zu Zefanja, dem Sohn Kuschis, des Sohnes Gedaljas, des Sohnes Amarjas, des Sohnes Hiskias, zur Zeit Josias, des Sohnes Amons, des Königs von Juda.

“I will sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” “When I destroy all mankind on the face of the earth,” declares the Lord.

Ich will alles vom Erdboden wegraffen, spricht der HERR.

“I will sweep away both man and beast; I will sweep away the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea — and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble.”a “When I destroy all mankind on the face of the earth,” declares the Lord,

Ich will Mensch und Vieh, die Vögel des Himmels und die Fische im Meer wegraffen; ich will zu Fall bringen die Gottlosen, ja, ich will die Menschen ausrotten vom Erdboden, spricht der HERR.

“I will stretch out my hand against Judah and against all who live in Jerusalem. I will destroy every remnant of Baal worship in this place, the very names of the idolatrous priests —

Ich will meine Hand ausstrecken gegen Juda und gegen alle, die in Jerusalem wohnen, und will ausrotten von dieser Stätte, was vom Baal noch übrig ist, dazu den Namen der Götzenpfaffen und Priester

those who bow down on the roofs to worship the starry host, those who bow down and swear by the Lord and who also swear by Molek,b

und die auf den Dächern anbeten des Himmels Heer, die es anbeten und schwören doch bei dem HERRN und zugleich bei Milkom

those who turn back from following the Lord and neither seek the Lord nor inquire of him.”

und die vom HERRN abfallen und die nach dem HERRN nichts fragen und ihn nicht achten.

Be silent before the Sovereign Lord, for the day of the Lord is near. The Lord has prepared a sacrifice; he has consecrated those he has invited.

Seid stille vor Gott dem HERRN, denn des HERRN Tag ist nahe; denn der HERR hat ein Schlachtopfer zubereitet und seine Gäste dazu geladen.

“On the day of the Lord’s sacrifice I will punish the officials and the king’s sons and all those clad in foreign clothes.

Und am Tage des Schlachtopfers des HERRN will ich heimsuchen die Oberen und die Söhne des Königs und alle, die ein fremdländisches Gewand tragen.

On that day I will punish all who avoid stepping on the threshold,c who fill the temple of their gods with violence and deceit.

Auch will ich zur selben Zeit die heimsuchen, die über die Schwelle springen, die ihres Herrn Haus füllen mit Rauben und Trügen.

“On that day,” declares the Lord, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, wailing from the New Quarter, and a loud crash from the hills.

Zur selben Zeit, spricht der HERR, wird sich ein lautes Geschrei erheben vom Fischtor her und ein Geheul von der Neustadt und ein großer Jammer von den Hügeln.

Wail, you who live in the market districtd; all your merchants will be wiped out, all who trade withe silver will be destroyed.

Heulet, die ihr im «Mörser» wohnt; denn das ganze Krämervolk ist dahin, und alle, die Geld wechseln, sind ausgerottet.

At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish those who are complacent, who are like wine left on its dregs, who think, ‘The Lord will do nothing, either good or bad.’

Zur selben Zeit will ich Jerusalem mit der Lampe durchsuchen und aufschrecken die Leute, die sich durch nichts aus der Ruhe bringen lassen und sprechen in ihrem Herzen: Der HERR wird weder Gutes noch Böses tun.

Their wealth will be plundered, their houses demolished. Though they build houses, they will not live in them; though they plant vineyards, they will not drink the wine.”

Ihre Güter sollen zum Raub werden und ihre Häuser verwüstet. Sie werden Häuser bauen und nicht darin wohnen, sie werden Weinberge pflanzen und keinen Wein davon trinken.

The great day of the Lord is near — near and coming quickly. The cry on the day of the Lord is bitter; the Mighty Warrior shouts his battle cry.

a Des HERRN großer Tag ist nahe, er ist nahe und eilt sehr. Horch, der bittere Tag des HERRN! Da werden die Starken schreien.

That day will be a day of wrath — a day of distress and anguish, a day of trouble and ruin, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness —

Denn dieser Tag ist ein Tag des Grimmes, ein Tag der Trübsal und der Angst, ein Tag des Wetters und des Ungestüms, ein Tag der Finsternis und des Dunkels, ein Tag der Wolken und des Nebels,

a day of trumpet and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the corner towers.

ein Tag der Posaune und des Kriegsgeschreis gegen die festen Städte und die hohen Zinnen.

“I will bring such distress on all people that they will grope about like those who are blind, because they have sinned against the Lord. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their entrails like dung.

Und ich will die Menschen ängstigen, daß sie umhergehen sollen wie die Blinden, weil sie wider den HERRN gesündigt haben. Ihr Blut soll vergossen werden, als wäre es Staub, und ihre Eingeweide sollen weggeworfen werden, als wären sie Kot.

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to save them on the day of the Lord’s wrath.” In the fire of his jealousy the whole earth will be consumed, for he will make a sudden end of all who live on the earth.

Es wird sie ihr Silber und Gold nicht erretten können am Tage des Zorns des HERRN, sondern das ganze Land soll durch das Feuer seines Grimms verzehrt werden; denn er wird plötzlich ein Ende machen mit allen, die im Lande wohnen.
