1-2 Вітання від Павла, апостола Ісуса Христа, за велінням Бога, нашого Спасителя, та Ісуса Христа, надії нашої, до Тимофія, істинного сина мого у вірі. Благодать, милість і мир тобі від Бога Отця і від Ісуса Христа, Господа нашого.

This letter is from Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, appointed by the command of God our Savior and Christ Jesus, who gives us hope.

I am writing to Timothy, my true son in the faith. May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace.

Перед тим, як вирушити до Македонії, я попрохав тебе залишитися в Ефесі. Я хочу, щоб ти наказав деяким людям припинити навчати брехні

When I left for Macedonia, I urged you to stay there in Ephesus and stop those whose teaching is contrary to the truth.

і не звертати уваги на вигадки і нескінченні родоводи, що приводять лише до суперечок, а не служать задуму Божому, який виконується через віру.

Don’t let them waste their time in endless discussion of myths and spiritual pedigrees. These things only lead to meaningless speculations,a which don’t help people live a life of faith in God.b

Мета цієї настанови — любов, що йде від доброго серця, чистого сумління і щирої віри.

The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.

Але деякі люди збочили і відхилилися від усього цього, віддавшись безглуздому марнословству, яке не несе ніякої користі.

But some people have missed this whole point. They have turned away from these things and spend their time in meaningless discussions.

Вони бажають бути вчителями Закону,[1] та не розуміють ні того, що кажуть, ані того, в чому запевняють.

They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don’t know what they are talking about, even though they speak so confidently.

Ми знаємо, що Закон добрий, якщо користуватися ним належним чином.

We know that the law is good when used correctly.

Ми також знаємо, що Закон існує не для праведних, а для порушників і заколотників, непоштивих і грішних, нечестивих і безбожників, убивць батьків і матерів, душогубів,

For the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful, who consider nothing sacred and defile what is holy, who kill their father or mother or commit other murders.

розпусників, мужоложців, работорговців, брехунів, лжесвідків і тих, хто діє проти істинного вчення Божого,

The law is for people who are sexually immoral, or who practice homosexuality, or are slave traders,c liars, promise breakers, or who do anything else that contradicts the wholesome teaching

яке підкоряється славній Добрій Звістці, що йде від благословенного Бога. Мені було довірено нести її людям.

that comes from the glorious Good News entrusted to me by our blessed God.

Я дякую Ісусу Христу, Господу нашому, Який дав мені сили, бо визнав мене гідним і призначив на служіння Собі,

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength to do his work. He considered me trustworthy and appointed me to serve him,

хоч до того я був богозневажником, гонителем Божої церкви і зухвальцем. Але Господь дарував мені прощення, оскільки чинив я те в невірі й незнанні.

even though I used to blaspheme the name of Christ. In my insolence, I persecuted his people. But God had mercy on me because I did it in ignorance and unbelief.

Та безмірна милість Господа нашого перелилася в мене разом з вірою і любов’ю, які знайшов я в Ісусі Христі.

Oh, how generous and gracious our Lord was! He filled me with the faith and love that come from Christ Jesus.

Ось істина, яка гідна повного і безсумнівного сприйняття: Христос Ісус прийшов у цей світ, аби спасти грішників, а я — найгірший з-поміж них.

This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” — and I am the worst of them all.

Саме з цієї причини мені було дано милість, щоб, використавши мене, найгіршого з грішників, Христос Ісус зміг би показати Своє довготерпіння, як приклад для тих, хто пізніше повірив би у Нього й отримав вічне життя.

But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.

Цареві вічному, невмирущому й невидимому, єдиному Богу честь і Слава на віки вічні. Амінь.

All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.

Я довіряю цей наказ тобі, Тимофію, сину мій, згідно з пророцтвами [2] про тебе, що були зроблені в минулому, щоб ти міг використати їх у праведному бою віри.

Timothy, my son, here are my instructions for you, based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier. May they help you fight well in the Lord’s battles.

Адже ти маєш віру Господа і чисте сумління. Дехто зрікся цього і втратив [3] свою віру.

Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

Серед них Ґіменей і Олександр, яких я передав сатані, щоб вони навчилися не говорити супроти Бога.

Hymenaeus and Alexander are two examples. I threw them out and handed them over to Satan so they might learn not to blaspheme God.
