These are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob, each with his household:

І вось імёны сыноў Ізраіля, якія прыйшлі ў Эгіпет з Якубам, увайшлі кожны з домам сваім:

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

Рубэн, Сымон, Левій і Юда,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

Ісахар, Завулён і Бэн’ямін,

Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

Дан і Нэфталі, Гад і Асэр.

All the descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in Egypt.

І ўсіх душаў, якія выйшлі з паясьніцы Якуба, было семдзясят, а Язэп быў у Эгіпце.

Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that generation.

І памёр Язэп, і ўсе браты ягоныя, і ўсё пакаленьне тое.

But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the land was filled with them.

І сыны Ізраіля пладзіліся, і нараджаліся, і памнажаліся, і ставаліся вельмі-вельмі магутнымі, і напоўнілася імі зямля.

Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

І паўстаў новы валадар у Эгіпце, які ня ведаў Язэпа.

And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us.

І сказаў ён народу свайму: «Вось, народ сыноў Ізраіля больш шматлікі і мацнейшы за нас.

Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.”

Давайце мудра ўчынім адносна яго, каб ён не памнажаўся; бо як здарыцца вайна, ён злучыцца з ворагамі нашымі, і будзе ваяваць з намі, і выйдзе з зямлі гэтай».

Therefore they set taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses.

І ён паставіў над ім наглядчыкаў працаў, каб уціскалі яго цяжкімі працамі. І пабудаваў [Ізраіль] на склады фараону гарады Пітом і Рамсэс.

But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.

І колькі ўціскалі яго, ён памнажаўся і пашыраўся. І [Эгіпцяне] трывожыліся з прычыны сыноў Ізраіля.

So they ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves

І зьняволілі Эгіпцяне сыноў Ізраіля, і ўціскалі,

and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them work as slaves.

і рабілі горкім жыцьцё іхняе цяжкаю працаю з глінаю і цэглаю, і ўсякаю працаю ў полі, і ўсякімі працамі зьневалялі іх і ўціскалі.

Then the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah,

І сказаў валадар Эгіпту павітухам гебрайскім, якіх адной імя было Шыфра, а імя другой — Пуа,

“When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.”

і сказаў: «Калі будзеце пры радзінах у Гебраек, глядзіце на радзільны ложак: калі будзе сын, дык забіце яго, а калі дачка, няхай застанецца жывая».

But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live.

Але павітухі баяліся Бога, і не рабілі так, як загадаў ім валадар Эгіпту, і пакідалі хлопцаў жывымі.

So the king of Egypt called the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the male children live?”

І паклікаў валадар Эгіпту павітухаў, і сказаў ім: «Чаму вы робіце гэта, чаму пакідаеце хлопцаў жывымі?»

The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous and give birth before the midwife comes to them.”

І сказалі павітухі фараону: «Жанчыны гебрайскія не такія, як эгіпецкія; яны здаровыя, і яны нараджаюць перш, чым прыйдзе да іх павітуха».

So God dealt well with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong.

І спагадаў Бог павітухам; і народ памнажаўся і вельмі мацнеў.

And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.

І сталася, [за тое], што павітухі баяліся Бога, Ён збудаваў ім дамы.

Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the Hebrewsa you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.”

І загадаў фараон усяму народу свайму, кажучы: «Кожнага сына, які народзіцца [ў Гебраяў], кідайце ў раку; а кожную дачку пакідайце жывую».
