Paulus, ein Knecht Christi Jesu, berufen zum Apostel, ausgesondert, zu predigen das Evangelium Gottes,

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God —

das er zuvor verheißen hat durch seine Propheten in der heiligen Schrift,

the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures

von seinem Sohn Jesus Christus, unserm Herrn, der geboren ist aus dem Geschlecht Davids nach dem Fleisch,

regarding his Son, who as to his earthly lifea was a descendant of David,

und nach dem Geist, der heiligt, eingesetzt ist als Sohn Gottes in Kraft durch die Auferstehung von den Toten.

and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in powerb by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Durch ihn haben wir empfangen Gnade und Apostelamt, in seinem Namen den Gehorsam des Glaubens aufzurichten unter allen Heiden,

Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes fromc faith for his name’s sake.

zu denen auch ihr gehört, die ihr berufen seid von Jesus Christus.

And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

An alle Geliebten Gottes und berufenen Heiligen in Rom: Gnade sei mit euch und Friede von Gott, unserm Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Christus!

To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

Zuerst danke ich meinem Gott durch Jesus Christus für euch alle, daß man von eurem Glauben in aller Welt spricht.

First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over the world.

Denn Gott ist mein Zeuge, dem ich in meinem Geist diene am Evangelium von seinem Sohn, daß ich ohne Unterlaß euer gedenke

God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly I remember you

und allezeit in meinem Gebet flehe, ob sich's wohl einmal fügen möchte durch Gottes Willen, daß ich zu euch komme.

in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by God’s will the way may be opened for me to come to you.

Denn mich verlangt danach, euch zu sehen, damit ich euch etwas mitteile an geistlicher Gabe, um euch zu stärken,

I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong —

das heißt, damit ich zusammen mit euch getröstet werde durch euren und meinen Glauben, den wir miteinander haben.

that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith.

Ich will euch aber nicht verschweigen, liebe Brüder, daß ich mir oft vorgenommen habe, zu euch zu kommen - wurde aber bisher gehindert -, damit ich auch unter euch Frucht schaffe wie unter andern Heiden.

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters,d that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

Ich bin ein Schuldner der Griechen und der Nichtgriechen, der Weisen und der Nichtweisen;

I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish.

darum, soviel an mir liegt, bin ich willens, auch euch in Rom das Evangelium zu predigen.

That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.

Denn ich schäme mich des Evangeliums nicht; denn es ist eine Kraft Gottes, die selig macht alle, die daran glauben, die Juden zuerst und ebenso die Griechen.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

Denn darin wird offenbart die Gerechtigkeit, die vor Gott gilt, welche kommt aus Glauben in Glauben; wie geschrieben steht (Habakuk 2,4): «Der Gerechte wird aus Glauben leben.»

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed — a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,e just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”f

Denn Gottes Zorn wird vom Himmel her offenbart über alles gottlose Wesen und alle Ungerechtigkeit der Menschen, die die Wahrheit durch Ungerechtigkeit niederhalten.

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

Denn was man von Gott erkennen kann, ist unter ihnen offenbar; denn Gott hat es ihnen offenbart.

since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.

Denn Gottes unsichtbares Wesen, das ist seine ewige Kraft und Gottheit, wird seit der Schöpfung der Welt ersehen aus seinen Werken, wenn man sie wahrnimmt, so daß sie keine Entschuldigung haben.

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

Denn obwohl sie von Gott wußten, haben sie ihn nicht als Gott gepriesen noch ihm gedankt, sondern sind dem Nichtigen verfallen in ihren Gedanken, und ihr unverständiges Herz ist verfinstert.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Da sie sich für Weise hielten, sind sie zu Narren geworden

Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools

und haben die Herrlichkeit des unvergänglichen Gottes vertauscht mit einem Bild gleich dem eines vergänglichen Menschen und der Vögel und der vierfüßigen und der kriechenden Tiere.

and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

Darum hat Gott sie in den Begierden ihrer Herzen dahingegeben in die Unreinheit, so daß ihre Leiber durch sie selbst geschändet werden,

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

sie, die Gottes Wahrheit in Lüge verkehrt und das Geschöpf verehrt und ihm gedient haben statt dem Schöpfer, der gelobt ist in Ewigkeit. Amen.

They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator — who is forever praised. Amen.

Darum hat sie Gott dahingegeben in schändliche Leidenschaften; denn ihre Frauen haben den natürlichen Verkehr vertauscht mit dem widernatürlichen;

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones.

desgleichen haben auch die Männer den natürlichen Verkehr mit der Frau verlassen und sind in Begierde zueinander entbrannt und haben Mann mit Mann Schande getrieben und den Lohn ihrer Verirrung, wie es ja sein mußte, an sich selbst empfangen.

In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

Und wie sie es für nichts geachtet haben, Gott zu erkennen, hat sie Gott dahingegeben in verkehrten Sinn, so daß sie tun, was nicht recht ist,

Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.

voll von aller Ungerechtigkeit, Schlechtigkeit, Habgier, Bosheit, voll Neid, Mord, Hader, List, Niedertracht; Zuträger,

They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips,

Verleumder, Gottesverächter, Frevler, hochmütig, prahlerisch, erfinderisch im Bösen, den Eltern ungehorsam,

slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents;

unvernünftig, treulos, lieblos, unbarmherzig.

they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.

Sie wissen, daß, die solches tun, nach Gottes Recht den Tod verdienen; aber sie tun es nicht allein, sondern haben auch Gefallen an denen, die es tun.

Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.
