Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not;

Горе городу убийц, который полон лжи, награбленного добра и убийц многочисленных жертв!

The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

Вы слышите звуки бичей, стук колёс, скачущих коней и грохот колесниц, проносящихся мимо!

The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:

Несётся конница, сверкают мечи, блестят копья! Множество убитых, груды трупов, которых не счесть! Люди спотыкаются о трупы.

Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.

Всё это случилось из-за Ниневии. Она, словно блудница, которой всегда всего мало. Она продала себя многим странам и поработила народы своим чародейством.

Behold, I am against thee, saith the LORD of hosts; and I will discover thy skirts upon thy face, and I will shew the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame.

"Я против тебя, — говорит Всемогущий Господь. — Я унижу тебя и заберу твой народ. Как мужчина, который поднимает тебе платье до головы и открывает твоё нагое тело. Я покажу народам твою наготу, и другие царства увидят срамоту твою.

And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazingstock.

Я забросаю тебя всей этой мерзостью, опозорю тебя и сделаю посмешищем людей.

And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

Каждый, кто увидит тебя, бросится прочь и скажет: "Ниневия разорена! Кто пожалеет её?" Где найти для неё утешителя?"

Art thou better than populous No, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about it, whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was from the sea?

Разве ты лучше Но-Аммона, стоящего на реке Нил и окружённого водой? Река была его защитой, вода служила ему стеной.

Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers.

Эфиопия и Египет дали Но-Аммону большую силу. Его поддерживали Судан и Ливия.

Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

Но Но-Аммон был покорён и пленён. На его улицах солдаты забивали маленьких детей до смерти. Они бросали жребий о том, кто возьмёт себе в рабы знатных людей, и всех их заковали в цепи.

Thou also shalt be drunken: thou shalt be hid, thou also shalt seek strength because of the enemy.

Так и ты, Ниневия, ты тоже падёшь, подобно пьянице! И постараешься скрыться, и будешь искать защиты от неприятеля.

All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

Все твои укрепления похожи на фиговые деревья со спелыми плодами. Когда их трясут, они падают прямо в рот едоку. Он съедает их, и нет их больше!

Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women: the gates of thy land shall be set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire shall devour thy bars.

Ниневия, твой народ — словно женщины, и неприятель готов их захватить. Ворота вашей страны настежь открыты врагам, огонь разрушил их деревянные засовы.

Draw thee waters for the siege, fortify thy strong holds: go into clay, and tread the morter, make strong the brickkiln.

Наберите воды и запаситесь ею на время осады, укрепляйте свои крепости! Возьмите глину, чтобы сделать больше кирпичей! Замесите глину! Приготовьте формы и обжигайте кирпичи!

There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off, it shall eat thee up like the cankerworm: make thyself many as the cankerworm, make thyself many as the locusts.

Но что бы ты ни делал, тебя всё равно до основания разрушит огонь! Убьёт тебя меч, а страна твоя будет выглядеть, словно опустошённая полчищами саранчи. Ниневия! Ты разрослась и стала подобна гусеницам или рою саранчи.

Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the cankerworm spoileth, and flieth away.

Ты умножила число своих купцов, пока их не стало, как звёзд на небе, но, как саранча, они разорят страну и улетят прочь.

Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

Охрана твоя тоже, как саранча; твои чиновники — словно рой саранчи, которая садится на каменные стены в холодный день. Когда же камни нагреваются от солнца, она улетает прочь, и никто не знает куда.

Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria: thy nobles shall dwell in the dust: thy people is scattered upon the mountains, and no man gathereth them.

Царь Ассирии, твои пастыри заснули, твои вельможи отдыхают. Народ твой рассеян на горах, и нет такого человека, который может собрать их и привести назад.

There is no healing of thy bruise; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the bruit of thee shall clap the hands over thee: for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?

Ниневия, ты получила смертельную рану, которую нельзя залечить. Каждый, кто услышит новость о тебе, будет рукоплескать твоему падению, ибо все они испытали твою жестокость!
