Paulus, ein Knecht JEsu Christi, berufen zum Apostel, ausgesondert, zu predigen das Evangelium GOttes,

This letter is from Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, chosen by God to be an apostle and sent out to preach his Good News.

welches er zuvor verheißen hat durch seine Propheten in der Heiligen Schrift,

God promised this Good News long ago through his prophets in the holy Scriptures.

von seinem Sohn, der geboren ist von dem Samen Davids nach dem Fleisch

The Good News is about his Son. In his earthly life he was born into King David’s family line,

und kräftiglich erweiset ein Sohn GOttes nach dem Geist, der da heiliget, seit der Zeit er auferstanden ist von den Toten, nämlich JEsus Christus, unser HErr

and he was shown to bea the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.b He is Jesus Christ our Lord.

(durch welchen wir haben empfangen Gnade und Apostelamt, unter allen Heiden den Gehorsam des Glaubens aufzurichten unter seinem Namen,

Through Christ, God has given us the privilegec and authority as apostles to tell Gentiles everywhere what God has done for them, so that they will believe and obey him, bringing glory to his name.

welcher ihr zum Teil auch seid, die da berufen sind von JEsu Christo):

And you are included among those Gentiles who have been called to belong to Jesus Christ.

Allen, die zu Rom sind, den Liebsten GOttes und berufenen Heiligen: Gnade sei mit euch und Friede von GOtt, unserm Vater, und dem HErrn JEsus Christus!

I am writing to all of you in Rome who are loved by God and are called to be his own holy people. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.

Aufs erste danke ich meinem GOtt durch JEsum Christum euer aller halben, daß man von eurem Glauben in aller Welt saget.

Let me say first that I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith in him is being talked about all over the world.

Denn GOtt ist mein Zeuge, welchem ich diene in meinem Geist am Evangelium von seinem Sohn, daß ich ohne Unterlaß euer gedenke

God knows how often I pray for you. Day and night I bring you and your needs in prayer to God, whom I serve with all my heartd by spreading the Good News about his Son.

und allezeit in meinem Gebet flehe, ob sich's einmal zutragen wollte, daß ich zu euch käme durch GOttes Willen.

One of the things I always pray for is the opportunity, God willing, to come at last to see you.

Denn mich verlanget, euch zu sehen, auf daß ich euch mitteile etwas geistlicher Gabe, euch zu stärken,

For I long to visit you so I can bring you some spiritual gift that will help you grow strong in the Lord.

das ist, daß ich samt euch getröstet würde durch euren und meinen Glauben, den wir untereinander haben.

When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.

Ich will euch aber nicht verhalten, liebe Brüder, daß ich mir oft habe vorgesetzt, zu euch zu kommen (bin aber verhindert bisher), daß ich auch unter euch Frucht schaffete gleichwie unter andern Heiden.

I want you to know, dear brothers and sisters,e that I planned many times to visit you, but I was prevented until now. I want to work among you and see spiritual fruit, just as I have seen among other Gentiles.

Ich bin ein Schuldner beide, der Griechen und der Ungriechen, beide, der Weisen und der Unweisen.

For I have a great sense of obligation to people in both the civilized world and the rest of the world,f to the educated and uneducated alike.

Darum, soviel an mir ist bin ich geneigt, auch euch zu Rom das Evangelium zu predigen.

So I am eager to come to you in Rome, too, to preach the Good News.

Denn ich schäme mich des Evangeliums von Christo nicht; denn es ist eine Kraft GOttes, die da selig machet alle, die daran glauben, die Juden vornehmlich und auch die Griechen,

For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes — the Jew first and also the Gentile.g

sintemal darinnen offenbaret wird die Gerechtigkeit, die vor GOtt gilt, welche kommt aus Glauben in Glauben; wie denn geschrieben stehet: Der Gerechte wird seines Glaubens leben.

This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”h

Denn GOttes Zorn vom Himmel wird offenbart über alles gottlose Wesen und Ungerechtigkeit der Menschen, die die Wahrheit in Ungerechtigkeit aufhalten.

But God shows his anger from heaven against all sinful, wicked people who suppress the truth by their wickedness.i

Denn daß man weiß, daß GOtt sei, ist ihnen offenbar; denn GOtt hat es ihnen offenbart

They know the truth about God because he has made it obvious to them.

damit, daß GOttes unsichtbares Wesen, das ist, seine ewige Kraft und Gottheit, wird ersehen, so man des wahrnimmt an den Werken, nämlich an der Schöpfung der Welt, also daß sie keine Entschuldigung haben,

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.

dieweil sie wußten, daß ein GOtt ist, und haben ihn nicht gepreiset als einen GOtt noch gedanket, sondern sind in ihrem Dichten eitel worden, und ihr unverständiges Herz ist verfinstert.

Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused.

Da sie sich für weise hielten, sind sie zu Narren worden

Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.

und haben verwandelt die Herrlichkeit des unvergänglichen GOttes in ein Bild gleich dem vergänglichen Menschen und der Vögel und der vierfüßigen und der kriechenden Tiere.

And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.

Darum hat sie auch GOtt dahingegeben in ihrer Herzen Gelüste, in Unreinigkeit, zu schänden ihre eigenen Leiber an sich selbst.

So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other’s bodies.

Die GOttes Wahrheit haben verwandelt in die Lüge und haben geehret und gedienet dem Geschöpfe mehr denn dem Schöpfer, der da gelobet ist in Ewigkeit. Amen.

They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen.

Darum hat sie GOtt auch dahingegeben in schändliche Lüste. Denn ihre Weiber haben verwandelt den natürlichen Brauch in den unnatürlichen

That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other.

Desselbigengleichen auch die Männer haben verlassen den natürlichen Brauch des Weibes und sind aneinander erhitzet in ihren Lüsten, und haben Mann mit Mann Schande gewirket und den Lohn ihres Irrtums (wie es denn sein sollte) an sich selbst empfangen.

And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved.

Und gleichwie sie nicht geachtet haben, daß sie GOtt erkenneten, hat sie GOtt auch dahingegeben in verkehrten Sinn, zu tun, was nicht taugt,

Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done.

voll alles Ungerechten, Hurerei, Schalkheit, Geizes, Bosheit, voll Hasses, Mordes, Haders, List, giftig, Ohrenbläser,

Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip.

Verleumder, Gottesverächter, Frevler, hoffärtig, ruhmredig, Schädliche, den Eltern ungehorsam,

They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents.

Unvernünftige, Treulose, störrig, unversöhnlich, unbarmherzig

They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy.

die GOttes Gerechtigkeit Wissen (daß, die solches tun, des Todes würdig sind), tun sie es nicht allein, sondern haben auch Gefallen an denen, die es tun.

They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too.
