Жил вениаминитянин по имени Киш, сын Авиэля, внук Церора, правнук Бехората, праправнук Афиаха, достойный1 человек из колена Вениаминова.

Now there was a man of Benjamin whose name was Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.

У него был сын по имени Саул, молодой и красивый, и не было среди израильтян никого красивее его — был он на голову выше всех.

He had a son whose name was Saul, a choice and handsome man, and there was not a more handsome person than he among the sons of Israel; from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people.

Однажды у Киша, отца Саула, пропали ослицы. Киш велел своему сыну Саулу: «Возьми с собой кого-нибудь из слуг и ступай поищи ослиц!»

Now the donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. So Kish said to his son Saul, “Take now with you one of the servants, and arise, go search for the donkeys.”

Вместе со слугой прошел Саул Ефремово нагорье, землю Шалишу, но не нашел их. Прошли они землю Шаалим, но ослиц не было и там, прошли они и землю Вениамина, но так и не нашли их.

He passed through the hill country of Ephraim and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they did not find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not find them.

Когда они дошли до земли Цуф, Саул сказал слуге, что был при нем: «Пора нам возвращаться, не то отец начнет беспокоиться уже не об ослицах, а о нас самих».

When they came to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come, and let us return, or else my father will cease to be concerned about the donkeys and will become anxious for us.”

Но тот ответил: «Здесь, в этом городе, есть человек Божий, весьма уважаемый человек. Что он ни скажет, всё сбывается. Давай зайдем к нему, может быть, он укажет нам, куда дальше держать путь».2

He said to him, “Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and the man is held in honor; all that he says surely comes true. Now let us go there, perhaps he can tell us about our journey on which we have set out.”

Саул сказал слуге: «С чем мы пойдем к такому человеку? Хлеба в нашей суме не осталось и подарка с собой нет, чтобы поднести человеку Божьему. Разве что-то у нас осталось?»

Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? For the bread is gone from our sack and there is no present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

Тогда слуга сказал Саулу: «Смотри, у меня есть четверть шекеля3 серебра. Я отдам ее человеку Божьему, и он нам укажет, куда идти».

The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand a fourth of a shekel of silver; I will give it to the man of God and he will tell us our way.”

(Прежде в Израиле, когда кто-либо шел вопросить Бога, говорили: «Пойдем к провидцу!» — кого теперь называют пророком, прежде называли провидцем.)

(Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he used to say, “Come, and let us go to the seer”; for he who is called a prophet now was formerly called a seer.)

Саул ответил слуге: «Хорошо ты сказал, пойдем!» И они пошли в город, где был человек Божий.

Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said; come, let us go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

Когда они поднимались к городу, встретились им девушки, идущие по воду, и они спросили у девушек: «В городе ли провидец?»

As they went up the slope to the city, they found young women going out to draw water and said to them, “Is the seer here?”

Те отвечали: «Да, сейчас вы его увидите. Он как раз сегодня пришел в город, но спешите, ведь нынче у народа жертвоприношение в святилище на холме.

They answered them and said, “He is; see, he is ahead of you. Hurry now, for he has come into the city today, for the people have a sacrifice on the high place today.

Как войдете в город, сразу ищите его, пока он не пошел пировать на тот холм, ведь народ не начнет пира до его прихода: он должен помолиться над жертвой,4 и только потом гости станут есть. А сейчас вы еще застанете его, идите!»

“As soon as you enter the city you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat, for the people will not eat until he comes, because he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Now therefore, go up for you will find him at once.”

Они вошли в город, и лишь только оказались внутри, навстречу им вышел Самуил, он как раз шел в святилище на холме.

So they went up to the city. As they came into the city, behold, Samuel was coming out toward them to go up to the high place.

За день до прихода Саула ГОСПОДЬ дал Самуилу откровение, сказав:

Now a day before Saul’s coming, the LORD had revealed this to Samuel saying,

«Завтра в это же время Я пошлю тебе человека из земли Вениамина. Его ты помажешь в правители над народом Моим Израилем, он и избавит народ Мой от филистимлян, потому что обратил Я взор на Мой народ, мольба их достигла Меня».

“About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over My people Israel; and he will deliver My people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have regarded My people, because their cry has come to Me.”

Когда Самуил увидел Саула, ГОСПОДЬ подсказал ему: «Это тот самый человек, о котором Я говорил тебе. Он и будет править Моим народом».

When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! This one shall rule over My people.”

Саул подошел к Самуилу прямо в воротах и спросил: «Скажи мне, прошу, где дом провидца?»

Then Saul approached Samuel in the gate and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.”

Самуил ответил Саулу: «Я и есть провидец. Ступай сейчас впереди меня на холм пировать со мной, а утром я тебя отпущу и расскажу всё, что только пожелаешь.

Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you shall eat with me today; and in the morning I will let you go, and will tell you all that is on your mind.

А что до ослиц, которые у тебя пропали три дня назад, то не беспокойся о них, они нашлись. Да и кому принадлежит всё лучшее5 в Израиле, как не тебе и всему твоему отеческому роду?»

“As for your donkeys which were lost three days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and for all your father’s household?”

Саул сказал в ответ: «Разве я не из колена Вениаминова, наименьшего в Израиле? И семейство моего отца — самое незначительное в колене Вениамина. Что такое ты мне говоришь?»

Saul replied, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me in this way?”

Самуил взял Саула и его слугу, ввел их в комнату, посадил во главе всех гостей (а там было около тридцати человек).

Then Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the hall and gave them a place at the head of those who were invited, who were about thirty men.

Повару Самуил сказал: «Подай ему тот кусок, который я передал тебе и велел отложить особо».

Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion that I gave you, concerning which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’”

Повар взял целый окорок и положил его перед Саулом, а Самуил сказал: «Вот что сберегли для тебя, возьми себе и поешь! Эту часть предназначили тебе, еще когда я стал созывать народ». В тот день Саул пировал с Самуилом.

Then the cook took up the leg with what was on it and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, “Here is what has been reserved! Set it before you and eat, because it has been kept for you until the appointed time, since I said I have invited the people.” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

Когда они спустились с холма в город, Самуил беседовал с Саулом на крыше6 своего дома.

When they came down from the high place into the city, Samuel spoke with Saul on the roof.

Следующим утром на самой заре Самуил позвал Саула, ночевавшего на крыше: «Вставай, я провожу тебя в путь!» Саул встал, и оба они вышли наружу.

And they arose early; and at daybreak Samuel called to Saul on the roof, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went out into the street.

Когда они подходили к городской окраине, Самуил сказал Саулу: «Прикажи слуге пройти вперед (тот так и сделал), а сам задержись: сейчас я возвещу тебе слово Божье».

As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Say to the servant that he might go ahead of us and pass on, but you remain standing now, that I may proclaim the word of God to you.”
