После того как ГОСПОДЬ, Бог ваш, истребит народы, землю которых Он отдает вам, и вы овладеете всеми их городами и будете жить в их домах,

When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeedest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;

выделите три города в той стране, которую ГОСПОДЬ, Бог ваш, дарует вам во владение.

Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

А расположение этих городов — где они должны находиться, чтобы в один из них мог убежать совершивший убийство, вы определите, разделив на три части ту страну, которую ГОСПОДЬ, Бог ваш, дает вам в наследство.

Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divide the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.

И вот при каком условии человек, убивший другого, может бежать туда, чтобы спасти свою жизнь: если он неумышленно убил человека, который не был прежде1 его врагом.

And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;

Пошел, положим, кто-то с соседом2 своим в лес по дрова, замахнулся топором, чтобы дерево срубить, а железо слетело у него с топорища и сразило насмерть соседа. Тогда он может бежать в один из тех городов и спасти свою жизнь.

As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:

Но если впереди у него долгая дорога, разъяренный кровный мститель может догнать его и расправиться с ним, хотя того и нельзя было бы приговорить к смерти, потому что он никогда не относился враждебно к убитому.

Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of death, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

Посему и повелеваю вам выделить у себя три таких города.

Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.

Если же ГОСПОДЬ, Бог ваш, расширит со временем владения ваши, как Он обещал клятвенно праотцам вашим, и отдаст вам всю землю, о которой им говорил, —

And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;

а это будет, если по любви к ГОСПОДУ, Богу вашему, и из желания всегда ходить Его путями будете в точности исполнять все заповеди Наказа сего, который даю вам ныне, — тогда к трем прежним городам прибавьте еще три.

If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, beside these three:

Пусть же не льется невинная кровь на земле вашей, которую ГОСПОДЬ, Бог ваш, дает вам в наследство, и на вас не ложится вина в пролитии крови.

That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

Другое дело, если возненавидит кто ближнего своего и, выбрав удобный случай, нападет на него и убьет его, а потом скроется в одном из городов-убежищ,

But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:

тогда старейшины города, из которого бежал убийца, должны послать за ним в город-убежище и передать кровному мстителю, чтобы убийца понес заслуженную кару.

Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

Жалеть его не следует. Избавь Израиль от вины за кровь, невинно пролитую, и будет тебе хорошо.

Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

Никогда не передвигай межу соседа твоего — межу, изначально проложенную предками вашими на отведенной тебе в наследство земле, в той стране, которую ГОСПОДЬ, Бог ваш, дает вам в собственность.

Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

Показания одного свидетеля не могут считаться достаточными для обвинения кого бы то ни было в каком-либо преступлении, провинности или совершённом грехе. Любое обвинение законно, если его подтверждают два или три свидетеля.

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Вот что следует делать, когда лжесвидетель пытается обвинить кого-нибудь в том или ином проступке:

If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;

обоим вовлеченным в тяжбу нужно предстать перед ГОСПОДОМ, перед священниками и судьями, которые будут служить в то время.

Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;

Судьям надлежит рассмотреть дело основательно, и, если выяснится, что свидетель этот говорил ложь, что оклеветал он брата своего,

And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

сделайте с ним именно то, что собирался он сделать с братом своим. Злу этому не место среди вас, искорените его!

Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

Все остальные должны узнать об этом и увидеть опасность, что им угрожает; тогда зло такого рода вы пресечете, не будет его у вас.

And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.

Никакой жалости! Пусть заплатит он жизнью за жизнь, оком за око, зубом за зуб, рукой пусть заплатит за руку, за ногу — ногой!

And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
