Paulus, Apostel[1] Christi Jesu durch Gottes Willenⓐ nach ‹der› Verheißung des Lebens in Christus Jesusⓑ,

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

Timotheusⓒ, ‹meinem› geliebten Kind: Gnade, Barmherzigkeit, Friede von Gott, dem Vater, und von Christus Jesus, unserem Herrnⓓ!

To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ich danke Gott, dem ich von ‹meinen› Voreltern her mit reinem Gewissen dieneⓔ, wie ich unablässig deiner gedenke in meinen Gebeten[2]ⓕ Nacht und Tagⓖ,

I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;

voller Verlangen, dich zu sehenⓗ — eingedenk deiner Tränen —, um mit Freude erfüllt zu werden.

Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;

‹Denn› ich erinnere mich des ungeheuchelten Glaubens in dirⓘ, der zuerst in deiner Großmutter Lois und deiner Mutter Eunike wohnteⓙ, ich bin aber überzeugt, auch in dir.

When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.

Um dieser Ursache willen erinnere ich dich, die Gnadengabe[3] Gottes anzufachen, die in dir durch das Auflegen meiner Hände istⓚ.

Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.

Denn Gott hat uns nicht einen Geist der Furchtsamkeit[4] gegebenⓛ, sondern der Kraftⓜ und der Liebe und der Zuchtⓝ.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

So schäme dich nun nicht des Zeugnisses unseres Herrnⓞ noch meiner, seines Gefangenenⓟ, sondern leide mitⓠ für das Evangelium nach der Kraft Gottesⓡ!

Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

Der hat uns gerettet und berufen mit heiligem Rufⓢ, nicht nach unseren Werkenⓣ, sondern nach ‹seinem› eigenen Vorsatzⓤ und der Gnade, die uns in Christus Jesus vor ewigen Zeiten gegebenⓥ,

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

jetzt aber offenbart worden ist durch die Erscheinung unseres Retters Christus Jesusⓦ, der den Tod zunichte gemachtⓧ, aber Leben und Unvergänglichkeit ans Licht gebracht hatⓨ durch das Evangeliumⓩ,

But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:

für das ich eingesetzt worden bin als Herold[5] und Apostel und Lehrerⓐ.

Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.

Um dieser Ursache willen leide ich dies auchⓑ; aber ich schäme mich nichtⓒ, denn ich weiß, wem ich geglaubt habe, und bin überzeugt, dass er mächtig ist, mein anvertrautes Gut bis auf jenen Tag zu bewahren.

For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Halte fest das[6] Vorbild[7] der gesunden Worteⓓ, die du von mir gehört hastⓔ, in Glauben und Liebe, die in Christus Jesus ‹sind›ⓕ!

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

Bewahre das schöne anvertraute Gutⓖ durch den Heiligen Geist, der in uns wohntⓗ!

That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

Du weißt dies, dass alle, die in Asien[8] sind, sich von mir abgewandt habenⓘ; unter ihnen sind Phygelus und Hermogenes.

This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

Der Herr gebe dem Hause des Onesiphorusⓙ Barmherzigkeit, denn er hat mich oft erquicktⓚ und sich meiner Ketten nicht geschämtⓛ;

The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:

sondern als er in Rom war, suchte er mich eifrig und fand ‹mich›ⓜ.

But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

Der Herr gebe ihm, dass er vonseiten des Herrn Barmherzigkeit finde an jenem Tagⓝ! Und wie viel er in Ephesus diente, weißt du ‹noch› besserⓞ.

The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
