Im Anfang war das Wort[1]ⓐ, und das Wort war bei Gott, und das Wort war Gottⓑ.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Dieses war im Anfang bei Gottⓒ.

The same was in the beginning with God.

Alles wurde durch dasselbeⓓ, und ohne dasselbe wurde auch nicht eines, das geworden ist.

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

In ihm war Lebenⓔ, und das Leben war das Licht der Menschenⓕ.

In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

Und das Licht scheint in der Finsternisⓖ, und die Finsternis hat es nicht erfasst[2].

And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Da war ein Mensch, von Gott gesandt, sein Name: Johannesⓗ.

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

Dieser kam zum Zeugnis, dass er zeugte von dem Licht, damit alle durch ihn glaubtenⓘ.

The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

Er war nicht das Licht, sondern ‹er kam,› dass er zeugte von dem Lichtⓙ.

He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Das war das wahrhaftige Lichtⓚ, das, in die Welt kommend, jeden Menschen erleuchtet[3]ⓛ.

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

Er war in der Welt, und die Welt wurde durch ihnⓜ, und die Welt kannte ihn nicht.

He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

Er kam in das Seine[4], und die Seinen[5] nahmen ihn nicht anⓝ;

He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

so viele ihn aber aufnahmen, denen gab er das Recht[6], Kinder Gottes zu werden, denen, die an seinen Namen glaubenⓞ;

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

die nicht aus Geblüt, auch nicht aus dem Willen des Fleisches, auch nicht aus dem Willen des Mannes, sondern aus Gott geboren sindⓟ.

Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Und das Wort wurde Fleischⓠ und wohnte[7] unter uns, und wir haben seine Herrlichkeit angeschautⓡ, eine Herrlichkeit als eines Eingeborenen[8] vom Vater, voller Gnade und Wahrheitⓢ. —

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Johannes zeugt von ihm und rief und sprach: Dieser war es, von dem ich sagte: Der nach mir kommtⓣ, ist vor mir geworden, denn er war eher als ichⓤ. —

John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.

Denn aus seiner Fülleⓥ haben wir alle empfangen, und ‹zwar› Gnade um Gnadeⓦ.

And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

Denn das Gesetz wurde durch Mose gegebenⓧ; die Gnade und die Wahrheitⓨ ist durch Jesus Christus geworden.

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Niemand hat Gott jemals gesehenⓩ; der eingeborene[9] Sohn[10], der in des Vaters Schoß ist, der hat ‹ihn› kundgemachtⓐ.

No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

ⓑ Und dies ist das Zeugnis des Johannes, als die Juden aus Jerusalem Priester und Leviten zu ihm sandten, damit sie ihn fragen sollten: Wer bist duⓒ?

And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?

Und er bekannte und leugnete nicht, und er bekannte: Ich bin nicht der Christusⓓ.

And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

Und sie fragten ihn: Was denn? Bist du Eliaⓔ? Und er sagt: Ich bin es nicht. Bist du der Prophetⓕ? Und er antwortete: Nein.

And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

Sie sprachen nun zu ihm: Wer bist du? Damit wir Antwort geben denen, die uns gesandt haben. Was sagst du von dir selbst?

Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?

Er sprach: Ich bin die «Stimme eines Rufenden in der Wüste: Macht gerade den Weg des Herrn», wie Jesaja, der Prophet, gesagt hatⓖ.

He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

Und sie waren abgesandt von den Pharisäern[11]. ⓗ

And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

Und sie fragten ihn und sprachen zu ihm: Was taufst du denn, wenn du nicht der Christus bist noch Elia noch der Prophet?

And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

Johannes antwortete ihnen und sprach: Ich taufe mit Wasserⓘ; mitten unter euch steht, den ihr nicht kennt,

John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

der nach mir kommtⓙ, vor dem[12] ich nicht würdig bin, den Riemen seiner Sandale zu lösen.

He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

Dies geschah zu Betanien, jenseits des Jordan, wo Johannes taufte.

These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

ⓚ Am folgenden Tag sieht er Jesus zu sich kommen und spricht: Siehe, das Lamm Gottesⓛ, das die Sünde der Welt wegnimmtⓜ!

The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

Dieser ist es, von dem ich sagte: Nach mir kommt ein Mann, der vor mir ist, denn er war eher als ichⓝ.

This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

Und ich kannte ihn nicht; aber damit er Israel offenbar werde, deswegen bin ich gekommen, mit Wasser zu taufen.

And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

Und Johannes bezeugte und sprach: Ich schaute den Geist wie eine Taube aus dem Himmel herabfahren, und er blieb auf ihm.

And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

Und ich kannte ihn nicht; aber der mich gesandt hat, mit[13] Wasser zu taufenⓞ, der sprach zu mir: Auf welchen du sehen wirst den Geist herabfahren und auf ihm bleiben, dieser ist es, der mit[14] Heiligem Geist tauftⓟ.

And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

Und ich habe gesehen und habe bezeugtⓠ, dass dieser der Sohn Gottes istⓡ.

And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

Am folgenden Tag stand Johannes wieder da und zwei von seinen Jüngernⓢ;

Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

und hinblickend auf Jesus, der vorbeiging, spricht er: Siehe, das Lamm Gottesⓣ!

And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

Und es hörten ihn die zwei Jünger reden und folgten Jesus nach.

And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Jesus aber wandte sich um und sah sie nachfolgen und spricht zu ihnen: Was sucht ihr? Sie aber sagten zu ihm: Rabbi[15] — was übersetzt heißt: Lehrer —, wo hältst du dich auf?

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

Er spricht zu ihnen: Kommt, und ihr werdet sehen[16]! Sie kamen nun und sahen, wo er sich aufhielt, und blieben jenen Tag bei ihm. Es war um die zehnte Stunde[17].

He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

Andreas, der Bruder des Simon Petrusⓤ, war einer von den zweien, die es von Johannes gehört hatten und ihm nachgefolgt waren.

One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

Dieser findet zuerst seinen eigenen Bruder Simon und spricht zu ihm: Wir haben den Messias gefunden — was übersetzt ist: Christus[18]ⓥ.

He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

Und er führte ihn zu Jesus. Jesus blickte ihn anⓦ und sprach: Du bist Simon, der Sohn des Johannesⓧ; du wirst Kephas heißen — was übersetzt wird: Stein[19]ⓨ.

And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

Am folgenden Tag wollte er nach Galiläa aufbrechen, und er findet Philippusⓩ; und Jesus spricht zu ihm: Folge mir nachⓐ!

The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.

Philippus aber war von Betsaidaⓑ, aus der Stadt des Andreas und Petrus.

Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

Philippus findet den Nathanaelⓒ und spricht zu ihm: Wir haben den gefunden, von dem Mose in dem Gesetz geschriebenⓓ und die Prophetenⓔ, Jesus, den Sohn des Josef, von Nazarethⓕ.

Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

Und Nathanael sprach zu ihm: Aus Nazareth kann etwas Gutes kommen? Philippus spricht zu ihm: Komm und sieh!

And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

Jesus sah den Nathanael zu sich kommen und spricht von ihm: Siehe, wahrhaftig ein Israelit, in dem kein Trug istⓖ!

Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

Nathanael spricht zu ihm: Woher kennst du mich? Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Ehe Philippus dich rief, als du unter dem Feigenbaum warst, sah ich dichⓗ.

Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

Nathanael antwortete und sprach: Rabbi, du bist der Sohn Gottes, du bist der König Israelsⓘ.

Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.

Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihm: Weil ich dir sagte: Ich sah dich unter dem Feigenbaum, glaubst du?[20] Du wirst Größeres als dies sehen.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

Und er spricht zu ihm: Wahrlich, wahrlich, ich sage euch: Ihr werdet den Himmel geöffnet sehen und die Engel Gottes auf— und niedersteigenⓙ auf den Sohn des Menschenⓚ.

And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
