Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

und Aphia, der Schwester, und Archippusⓒ, unserem Mitkämpferⓓ, und der Gemeinde[1], die in deinem Haus istⓔ:

And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:

Gnade euch und Friede von Gott, unserem Vater, und dem Herrn Jesus Christusⓕ!

Grace to you, and peace, from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ich danke meinem Gott, indem ich allezeit deiner in meinen Gebeten gedenkeⓖ,

I thank my God, making mention of thee always in my prayers,

da ich von deiner Liebe und von dem Glauben höre, den du an den Herrn Jesus und allen Heiligen gegenüber hastⓗ,

Hearing of thy love and faith, which thou hast toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints;

dass[2] die Gemeinschaft deines Glaubens wirksam werde in der Erkenntnis alles Guten, das in uns im Hinblick auf Christus ist.

That the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus.

Denn ich hatte viel Freude und Trostⓘ wegen deiner Liebe, weil die Herzen[3] der Heiligen durch dich, Bruder, erquickt worden sindⓙ.

For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.

Deshalb, obwohl ich große Freimütigkeit in Christus habe, dir zu gebieten, was sich ziemtⓚ,

Wherefore, though I might be much bold in Christ to enjoin thee that which is convenient,

bitte ich ‹doch› vielmehr um der Liebe willen als ein solcher, wie ich bin, Paulus, der Alte, jetzt aber auch ein Gefangener Christi Jesuⓛ.

Yet for love's sake I rather beseech thee, being such an one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

Ich bitte[4] dich für mein Kind, das ich gezeugt habeⓜ in den Fesseln, Onesimusⓝ,

I beseech thee for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my bonds:

der dir einst unnütz war, jetzt aber dir und mir nützlich ist[5].

Which in time past was to thee unprofitable, but now profitable to thee and to me:

Den habe ich zu dir zurückgesandt — ihn, das ist mein Herz[6].

Whom I have sent again: thou therefore receive him, that is, mine own bowels:

Ich wollte ihn bei mir behalten, damit er statt deiner mir diene in den Fesseln des Evangeliums.

Whom I would have retained with me, that in thy stead he might have ministered unto me in the bonds of the gospel:

Aber ohne deinen Willen wollte ich nichts tun, damit deine Wohltat[7] nicht wie gezwungen, sondern freiwillig seiⓞ.

But without thy mind would I do nothing; that thy benefit should not be as it were of necessity, but willingly.

Denn vielleicht ist er deswegen für eine Zeit ‹von dir› getrennt gewesen, damit du ihn für immer[8] besitzen sollst,

For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever;

nicht länger als einen Sklavenⓟ, sondern mehr als einen Sklaven, als einen geliebten Bruderⓠ, besonders für mich, wie viel mehr aber für dich, sowohl im Fleisch als auch im Herrn.

Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

Wenn du mich nun für ‹deinen› Gefährten hältst, so nimm ihn auf wie mich!

If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

Wenn er dir aber irgendein Unrecht getan hat oder dir etwas schuldig ist, so rechne dies mir an!

If he hath wronged thee, or oweth thee ought, put that on mine account;

Ich, Paulus, habe es mit meiner Hand geschrieben, ich will bezahlen; ich brauche dir nicht zu sagen[9], dass du auch dich selbst mir schuldig bist.

I Paul have written it with mine own hand, I will repay it: albeit I do not say to thee how thou owest unto me even thine own self besides.

Ja, Bruder, ich möchte deiner froh werden[10] im Herrn. Erquicke mein Herz[11] in Christus!

Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

Da ich deinem Gehorsam vertraue, habe ich dir geschrieben, und ich weiß, dass du auch mehr tun wirst, als ich sageⓡ.

Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also do more than I say.

Zugleich aber bereite mir auch eine Herberge! Denn ich hoffe, dass ich durch eure Gebete euch werde geschenkt werdenⓢ.

But withal prepare me also a lodging: for I trust that through your prayers I shall be given unto you.
