Petrus, Apostel Jesu Christi, an die auserwählten Fremdlinge in der Zerstreuung, in Pontus, Galatien, Kappadozien, Asien und Bithynien,

This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.a

nach der Vorsehung Gottes des Vaters, in der Heiligung des Geistes, zum Gehorsam und zur Besprengung mit dem Blute Jesu Christi; Gnade und Friede widerfahre euch mehr und mehr!

God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace.

Gelobt sei der Gott und Vater unsres Herrn Jesus Christus, der uns nach seiner großen Barmherzigkeit wiedergeboren hat zu einer lebendigen Hoffnung durch die Auferstehung Jesu Christi von den Toten,

All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation,

zu einem unvergänglichen und unbefleckten und unverwelklichen Erbe, das im Himmel aufbehalten wird für euch,

and we have a priceless inheritance — an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.

die ihr in Gottes Macht durch den Glauben bewahrt werdet zu dem Heil, das bereit ist, geoffenbart zu werden in der letzten Zeit;

And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see.

in welcher ihr frohlocken werdet, die ihr jetzt ein wenig, wo es sein muß, traurig seid in mancherlei Anfechtungen,

So be truly glad.b There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while.

damit die Bewährung eures Glaubens, die viel kostbarer ist als die des vergänglichen Goldes (das durchs Feuer erprobt wird), Lob, Preis und Ehre zur Folge habe bei der Offenbarung Jesu Christi;

These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold — though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

welchen ihr nicht gesehen und doch lieb habt, an welchen ihr jetzt glaubet, ohne ihn zu sehen, und über den ihr euch freuen werdet mit unaussprechlicher und herrlicher Freude,

You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy.

wenn ihr das Endziel eures Glaubens davontraget, der Seelen Seligkeit!

The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

Nach dieser Seligkeit suchten und forschten die Propheten, die von der euch widerfahrenen Gnade geweissagt haben.

This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you.

Sie forschten, auf welche und welcherlei Zeit der Geist Christi in ihnen hindeute, der die für Christus bestimmten Leiden und die darauf folgende Herrlichkeit zuvor bezeugte.

They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.

Ihnen wurde geoffenbart, daß sie nicht sich selbst, sondern euch dienten mit dem, was euch nunmehr durch die verkündigt worden ist, welche euch das Evangelium durch den vom Himmel gesandten heiligen Geist gepredigt haben, Dinge, in welche auch die Engel hineinzuschauen gelüstet.

They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.

Darum umgürtet die Lenden eures Gemütes, seid nüchtern und setzet eure Hoffnung ganz auf die Gnade, die euch dargeboten wird in der Offenbarung Jesu Christi.

So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.

Als gehorsame Kinder gewöhnet euch nicht wieder die Begierden an, denen ihr früher in eurer Unwissenheit fröntet;

So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then.

sondern wie der, welcher euch berufen hat, heilig ist, werdet auch ihr heilig in eurem ganzen Wandel.

But now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.

Denn es steht geschrieben: «Ihr sollt heilig sein! Denn ich bin heilig.»

For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.”c

Und wenn ihr den als Vater anrufet, der ohne Ansehen der Person richtet nach eines jeglichen Werk, so führet euren Wandel, solange ihr hier wallet, mit Furcht,

And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time here as “temporary residents.”

da ihr ja wisset, daß ihr nicht mit vergänglichen Dingen, mit Silber oder Gold, losgekauft worden seid von eurem eitlen, von den Vätern überlieferten Wandel,

For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.

sondern mit dem kostbaren Blute Christi, als eines unschuldigen und unbefleckten Lammes,

It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.

der zwar zuvor ersehen war vor Grundlegung der Welt, aber geoffenbart wurde am Ende der Zeiten um euretwillen,

God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake.

die ihr durch ihn gläubig seid an Gott, der ihn von den Toten auferweckt und ihm Herrlichkeit gegeben hat, so daß euer Glaube auch Hoffnung ist auf Gott.

Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.

Nachdem ihr eure Seelen durch Gehorsam gegen die Wahrheit gereinigt habt zu ungeheuchelter Bruderliebe, so liebet einander nachhaltig und von Herzen,

You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters.d Love each other deeply with all your heart.e

als die da wiedergeboren sind nicht aus vergänglichem, sondern aus unvergänglichem Samen, durch das lebendige und bleibende Gotteswort!

For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God.

Denn «alles Fleisch ist wie Gras und alle seine Herrlichkeit wie des Grases Blume. Das Gras ist verdorrt und die Blume abgefallen; aber des Herrn Wort bleibt in Ewigkeit.»

As the Scriptures say, “People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flower fades.

Das ist aber das Wort, welches euch als frohe Botschaft verkündigt worden ist.

But the word of the Lord remains forever.”f And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.
