После смерти Иисуса Навина стали сыны Израилевы вопрошать Господа: «Какое из наших племен должно пойти первым войной на ханаанеян?»

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass, that the children of Israel asked the LORD, saying, Who shall go up for us against the Canaanites first, to fight against them?

Господь ответил: «Пусть сделает это племя Иуды. И знайте, эту страну Я отдаю в его руки».

And the LORD said, Judah shall go up: behold, I have delivered the land into his hand.

Тогда люди из племени Иуды сказали своим братьям из племени Симеона: «Пойдемте с нами отвоевывать у хананеев удел, по жребию доставшийся нашему племени, а потом мы пойдем с вами отвоевывать ваш удел». И племя Симеона присоединилось к ним.

And Judah said unto Simeon his brother, Come up with me into my lot, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I likewise will go with thee into thy lot. So Simeon went with him.

Но когда же воины Иуды пошли в наступление, Господь отдал в их руки ханаанеев и периззеев, их войско в десять тысяч человек было разбито в Везеке.

And Judah went up; and the LORD delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand: and they slew of them in Bezek ten thousand men.

Там им попался правитель Везека, они вступили с ним в бой и нанесли поражение хананеям и перизеям.

And they found Adonibezek in Bezek: and they fought against him, and they slew the Canaanites and the Perizzites.

Правитель Везека бежал, они погнались за ним, схватили и отрубили ему большие пальцы на ногах и на руках.

But Adonibezek fled; and they pursued after him, and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes.

Тогда сказал правитель Везека: «Семьдесят царей, которым я отрубил большие пальцы на руках и на ногах, подбирали крохи под моим столом. По моим делам воздал мне Бог!» Его отвели в Иерусалим, и там он умер.

And Adonibezek said, Threescore and ten kings, having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gathered their meat under my table: as I have done, so God hath requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died.

Сыны Иудины воевали и с Иерусалимом, овладели им, перебили защитников мечом, а город предали огню.

Now the children of Judah had fought against Jerusalem, and had taken it, and smitten it with the edge of the sword, and set the city on fire.

Затем сыны Иудины отправились на войну с хананеями, которые населяли Нагорье, пустыню Негев и предгорья.

And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites, that dwelt in the mountain, and in the south, and in the valley.

Воины Иуды выступили против хананеев, живших в Хевроне (прежде Хеврон назывался Кирьят-Арба), и поразили Шешая, Ахимана и Талмая.

And Judah went against the Canaanites that dwelt in Hebron: (now the name of Hebron before was Kirjatharba:) and they slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.

Оттуда они пошли против жителей Девира (прежде Девир назывался Кирьят-Сефер),

And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjathsepher:

причем Калев обещал: «Кто победит Кирьят-Сефер и захватит его, тому я отдам в жены дочь мою Ахсу».

And Caleb said, He that smiteth Kirjathsepher, and taketh it, to him will I give Achsah my daughter to wife.

Эту победу одержал Отниэль, сын Кеназа, младший брат Калева, и тот отдал ему в жены свою дочь Ахсу.

And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it: and he gave him Achsah his daughter to wife.

Однажды они вместе навещали Калева, а она как раз побуждала Отниэля выпросить у ее отца земельный надел. Она едва слезла с осла, как отец спросил ее: «Ну что тебе?» Она ответила:

And it came to pass, when she came to him, that she moved him to ask of her father a field: and she lighted from off her ass; and Caleb said unto her, What wilt thou?

«Дай мне благословение! Ты одарил меня землей пустыни Негев, так подари же и источники воды!» Тогда Калев подарил ей и верхние, и нижние источники воды.

And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the nether springs.

Кенеи, происходившие от Моисеева тестя, отправились из Города Пальм вместе с сынами Иудиными в Иудейскую пустыню, то есть в Негев около Арада. Там и поселились они среди израильского народа.

And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which lieth in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.

А воины Иуды, вместе с воинами Симеона, своими братьями, отправились на бой с хананеями, жившими в Цефате, разбили их, предали заклятью Цефат и дали поселению новое имя Хорма.

And Judah went with Simeon his brother, and they slew the Canaanites that inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. And the name of the city was called Hormah.

Также они захватили Газу с ее округой, Ашкелон с округой и Экрон с округой.

Also Judah took Gaza with the coast thereof, and Askelon with the coast thereof, and Ekron with the coast thereof.

Господь был с племенеи Иуды, и так они овладели всем Нагорьем. Но от жителей долин избавиться они не смогли, потому что у тех были колесницы, окованные железом.

And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.

Калеву отдали Хеврон, как и обещал ему Моисей, и он изгнал оттуда трех сынов Анаковых.

And they gave Hebron unto Caleb, as Moses said: and he expelled thence the three sons of Anak.

А от евусеев, живших в Иерусалиме, не избавились сыны Вениаминовы, и остались жить евусеи с сынами Вениаминовыми вплоть до сего дня.

And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem unto this day.

Воины дома Иосифа также выступили против Бет-Эля, и Господь был с ними.

And the house of Joseph, they also went up against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.

Они стали осматривать укрепления Бет-Эля (прежнее имя города было Луз),

And the house of Joseph sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)

и тут стражникам попался какой-то человек, выходивший из города. Они попросили его: «Ты покажи нам, как пробраться в город, и мы отплатим тебе добром!»

And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.

Он показал им, как пробраться в город, и тогда они поразили его жителей мечом, а человека того отпустили вместе с семьей.

And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.

Он отправился в землю хеттов и основал город, дав ему имя Луз, и это имя остается за ним по сей день.

And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

Племя Манассии не сумело завладеть Бет-Шеаном с окрестными селениями, Таанахом с окрестными селениями, не одолело оно жителей Дора с окрестными селениями, жителей Ивлеама с окрестными селениями, жителей Мегиддо с окрестными селениями — хананеи прочно держались за эту землю.

Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Bethshean and her towns, nor Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.

Когда народ Израиля стал могущественным, то заставил хананеев работать на себя, но так и не избавился от них.

And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.

Так и племя Ефрема не избавилось от хананеев, живших в Гезере — так и остались они жить в Гезере среди ефремлян.

Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.

Племя Завулона не избавилось от обитателей Китрона и обитателей Нахалола, ханенеи остались среди них как подневольные работники.

Neither did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt among them, and became tributaries.

Племя Асира не избавилось от обитателей Акко, обитателей Сидона, Ахлава, Ахзива, Нелбы, Апика и Рехова,

Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob:

и люди Асира так и жили среди хананеев, которые населяли ту землю и от которых не смогли избавиться.

But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: for they did not drive them out.

Племя Неффалима не избавилось от обитателей Бет-Шемеша и обитателей Бет-Аната — так и жили они среди хананеев, населявших ту землю, а население Бет-Шемеша и Бет-Аната заставили работать на себя.

Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Bethshemesh, nor the inhabitants of Bethanath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Bethshemesh and of Bethanath became tributaries unto them.

Амореи тем временем зажали сынов Дана в нагорье, не позволяя им спуститься на равнину.

And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would not suffer them to come down to the valley:

Так и держались амореи за гору Херес, за Аялон и Шаалвим, но когда сыны Иосифа стали могущественными, то заставили их работать на себя.

But the Amorites would dwell in mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became tributaries.

Пределы аморейские начинаются от Подъема Скорпионов, от Селы и далее.

And the coast of the Amorites was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.
