The elder, To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.

Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

Geliebter, ich wünsche, dass es dir in allem wohlgeht und du gesund bist, wie es deiner Seele wohlgeht.

It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it.

Denn ich habe mich sehr gefreut, als Brüder kamen und für deine Wahrheit Zeugnis gaben, wie du in ‹der› Wahrheit wandelst.

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

Eine größere Freude habe ich nicht als dies, dass ich höre, dass meine Kinder in der Wahrheit wandelnⓑ.

Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers and sisters,a even though they are strangers to you.

Geliebter, treu handelst du in dem, was du an den Brüdern, sogar an fremden, tust

They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God.

— sie haben vor der Gemeinde[1] von deiner Liebe Zeugnis gegebenⓒ —, und du wirst wohltun, wenn du sie zur Reise ausstattest, wie es Gottes würdig istⓓ.

It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans.

Denn für den Namen sind sie hinausgegangen, und sie nehmen nichts von den Heiden[2]ⓔ.

We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.

Wir nun sind schuldig, solche aufzunehmenⓕ, damit wir Mitarbeiter der Wahrheit werden.

I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to be first, will not welcome us.

Ich habe der Gemeinde[3] etwas geschrieben, aber Diotrephes, der gern unter ihnen der Ersteⓖ sein will, nimmt uns nicht an.

So when I come, I will call attention to what he is doing, spreading malicious nonsense about us. Not satisfied with that, he even refuses to welcome other believers. He also stops those who want to do so and puts them out of the church.

Deshalb, wenn ich komme, will ich seine Werke in Erinnerung bringen, die er tut, indem er mit bösen Worten gegen uns schwatzt; und sich hiermit nicht begnügend, nimmt er selbst die Brüder nicht an und wehrt auch denen, die es wollen, und stößt sie aus der Gemeinde[4].

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God. Anyone who does what is evil has not seen God.

Geliebter, ahme nicht das Böse nach, sondern das Guteⓗ! Wer Gutes tut, ist aus Gottⓘ; wer Böses tut, hat Gott nicht gesehen.

Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone — and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true.

Dem Demetrius ist Zeugnis gegeben worden von allen und von der Wahrheit selbst; aber auch wir geben Zeugnis, und du weißt, dass unser Zeugnis wahr istⓙ.

I have much to write you, but I do not want to do so with pen and ink.

Ich hätte dir vieles zu schreiben, aber ich will dir nicht mit Tinte und Feder schreibenⓚ,

I hope to see you soon, and we will talk face to face. Peace to you. The friends here send their greetings. Greet the friends there by name.

sondern ich hoffe, dich bald zu sehen, und wir wollen mündlich ‹miteinander› redenⓛ.
