Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment.

Бра́тия мои́! не мно́гие де́лайтесь учителя́ми, зна́я, что мы подве́ргнемся бо́льшему осужде́нию,

For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

и́бо все мы мно́го согреша́ем. Кто не согреша́ет в сло́ве, тот челове́к соверше́нный, могу́щий обузда́ть и всё те́ло.

Now if we put the bits into the horses’ mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well.

Вот, мы влага́ем удила́ в рот коня́м, что́бы они́ повинова́лись нам, и управля́ем всем те́лом их.

Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires.

Вот, и корабли́, как ни велики́ они́ и как ни си́льными ветра́ми но́сятся, небольши́м рулём направля́ются, куда́ хо́чет ко́рмчий;

So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire!

так и язы́к — небольшо́й член, но мно́го де́лает. Посмотри́, небольшо́й ого́нь как мно́го вещества́ зажига́ет!

And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell.

И язы́к — ого́нь, прикра́са непра́вды; язы́к в тако́м положе́нии нахо́дится ме́жду чле́нами на́шими, что оскверня́ет всё те́ло и воспаля́ет круг жи́зни, бу́дучи сам воспаля́ем от гее́нны.

For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race.

И́бо вся́кое естество́ звере́й и птиц, пресмыка́ющихся и морски́х живо́тных укроща́ется и укрощено́ естество́м челове́ческим,

But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison.

а язы́к укроти́ть никто́ из люде́й не мо́жет: э́то — неудержи́мое зло; он испо́лнен смертоно́сного я́да.

With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God;

Им благословля́ем Бо́га и Отца́, и им проклина́ем челове́ков, сотворённых по подо́бию Бо́жию.

from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way.

Из тех же уст исхо́дит благослове́ние и прокля́тие: не должно́, бра́тия мои́, сему́ так быть.

Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water?

Течёт ли из одного́ отве́рстия исто́чника сла́дкая и го́рькая вода́?

Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh.

Не мо́жет, бра́тия мои́, смоко́вница приноси́ть масли́ны и́ли виногра́дная лоза́ смо́квы. Та́кже и оди́н исто́чник не мо́жет излива́ть солёную и сла́дкую во́ду.

Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom.

Мудр ли и разу́мен кто из вас, докажи́ э́то на са́мом де́ле до́брым поведе́нием с му́дрою кро́тостью.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, do not be arrogant and so lie against the truth.

Но е́сли в ва́шем се́рдце вы име́ете го́рькую за́висть и сварли́вость, то не хвали́тесь и не лги́те на и́стину.

This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic.

Э́то не есть му́дрость, нисходя́щая свы́ше, но земна́я, душе́вная, бесо́вская,

For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing.

и́бо где за́висть и сварли́вость, там неустро́йство и всё худо́е.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.

Но му́дрость, сходя́щая свы́ше, во-пе́рвых, чиста́, пото́м мирна́, скромна́, послу́шлива, полна́ милосе́рдия и до́брых плодо́в, беспристра́стна и нелицеме́рна.

And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Плод же пра́вды в ми́ре се́ется у тех, кото́рые храня́т мир.
