Когда число учеников стало расти, эллинисты начали жаловаться на палеcтинских евреев. Они говорили, что те пренебрегают их вдовами, когда раздают ежедневную пищу.

But as the believersa rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food.

Тогда Двенадцать созвали всех учеников и сказали: — Мы не можем, оставив слово Божье, заняться обслуживанием столов.

So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program.

Поэтому, братья, выберите из вашей среды семь человек с хорошей репутацией, исполненных Духа и мудрости, и мы возложим на них эту обязанность.

And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility.

Сами же мы будем уделять больше времени молитве и служению слова.

Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.”

Это предложение всем понравилось, и выбрали Стефана, человека, полного веры и Духа Святого, Филиппа, Прохора, Никанора, Тимона, Пармена и Николая из Aнтиохии, обращенного в иудаизм.

Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith).

Aпостолы помолились об этих людях и возложили на них руки.

These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them.

Слово Божье распространялось, и число учеников в Иерусалиме быстро увеличивалось, даже многие священники покорились вере.

So God’s message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too.

Стефан, человек, полный Божьей милости и силы, совершал в народе великие чудеса и знамения.

Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people.

Некоторые из членов так называемой Синагоги Вольноотпущенников, Киренцев и Aлександрийцев, а также иудеи из Киликии и Aсии, начали мешать Стефану в его работе, вступая с ним в спор,

But one day some men from the Synagogue of Freed Slaves, as it was called, started to debate with him. They were Jews from Cyrene, Alexandria, Cilicia, and the province of Asia.

но они ничего не могли противопоставить мудрости и силе Духа, с которыми говорил Стефан.

None of them could stand against the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke.

Тогда они тайно подговорили нескольких людей сказать: "Мы слышали, как Стефан говорил богохульные слова против Моисея и Бога".

So they persuaded some men to lie about Stephen, saying, “We heard him blaspheme Moses, and even God.”

Они возбудили народ, старейшин и учителей закона; внезапно напав на Стефана, они схватили его и привели в Синедрион.

This roused the people, the elders, and the teachers of religious law. So they arrested Stephen and brought him before the high council.b

Представили лжесвидетелей, которые сказали: — Этот человек постоянно говорит против святого храма и против закона.

The lying witnesses said, “This man is always speaking against the holy Temple and against the law of Moses.

Мы слышали, как он говорил, что Иисус из Назарета разрушит храм и изменит обычаи, которые передал нам Моисей.

We have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazarethc will destroy the Temple and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”

Все сидевшие в Синедрионе внимательно смотрели на Стефана и видели, что его лицо сияет, как лицо ангела.

At this point everyone in the high council stared at Stephen, because his face became as bright as an angel’s.
