В то время, когда Aполлос был в Коринфе, Павел, пройдя через горные области, пришел в Эфес. Там он встретил нескольких учеников.

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers.a

— Вы приняли Духа Святого, когда вы поверили? — спросил он их. — Мы даже и не слышали о том, что существует Святой Дух, — ответили те.

“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them. “No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

Тогда Павел спросил: — Во что же вы были крещены? — В крещение Иоанна, — ответили они.

“Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked. And they replied, “The baptism of John.”

Павел сказал: — Крещение Иоанна было крещением покаяния. Он призывал народ верить в того, кто должен был прийти после него: в Иисуса.

Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”

Когда они услышали об этом, они приняли крещение во имя Господа Иисуса.

As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

И когда Павел возложил на них руки, на них сошел Святой Дух. Они тогда начали говорить языками и пророчествовать.

Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tonguesb and prophesied.

Всего их было около двенадцати человек.

There were about twelve men in all.

Павел три месяца смело проповедовал в синагоге, беседуя с людьми и убеждая их о Божьем Царстве.

Then Paul went to the synagogue and preached boldly for the next three months, arguing persuasively about the Kingdom of God.

Некоторые из них, однако, ожесточались и отказывались верить, перед всеми браня учение Иисуса. Тогда Павел оставил их. Он отделил учеников и ежедневно беседовал с ними в зале для лекций, принадлежавшем Тиранну.

But some became stubborn, rejecting his message and publicly speaking against the Way. So Paul left the synagogue and took the believers with him. Then he held daily discussions at the lecture hall of Tyrannus.

Так продолжалось два года, и все иудеи и греки, жившие в Aсии, слышали слово Господа.

This went on for the next two years, so that people throughout the province of Asia — both Jews and Greeks — heard the word of the Lord.

Бог совершал через Павла необыкновенные чудеса.

God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles.

Больным давали прикоснуться к платкам и передникам, к которым прежде прикасался Павел, и у них проходили болезни и злые духи выходили из них.

When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled.

Некоторые из иудеев, которые скитались и также изгоняли злых духов, тоже попробовали призывать над одержимыми имя Господа Иисуса. Они говорили: — Заклинаю вас Иисусом, которого проповедует Павел.

A group of Jews was traveling from town to town casting out evil spirits. They tried to use the name of the Lord Jesus in their incantation, saying, “I command you in the name of Jesus, whom Paul preaches, to come out!”

Это были семь сыновей иудейского первосвященника Скевы.

Seven sons of Sceva, a leading priest, were doing this.

Но злой дух ответил им: — Иисуса я знаю, о Павле тоже знаю, а вы кто такие?

But one time when they tried it, the evil spirit replied, “I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?”

И человек, в котором был злой дух, набросился на них и оказался настолько сильнее их, что они выбежали из дома раздетые и израненные.

Then the man with the evil spirit leaped on them, overpowered them, and attacked them with such violence that they fled from the house, naked and battered.

Когда об этом узнали иудеи и греки, жившие в Эфесе, их охватил страх, и к имени Господа Иисуса стали относиться с большим почтением.

The story of what happened spread quickly all through Ephesus, to Jews and Greeks alike. A solemn fear descended on the city, and the name of the Lord Jesus was greatly honored.

Многие из поверивших приходили и признавались перед всеми в своих делах.

Many who became believers confessed their sinful practices.

А многие занимавшиеся прежде волшебством приносили свои колдовские свитки и перед всеми сжигали их. Когда подсчитали общую стоимость всех сожженных свитков, то она оказалась в пятьдесят тысяч драхм.

A number of them who had been practicing sorcery brought their incantation books and burned them at a public bonfire. The value of the books was several million dollars.c

Так слово Божье распространялось и набирало силу.

So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect.

После всего этого Павел решил пойти в Иерусалим через Македонию и Aхайю. — После того, как я побываю в Иерусалиме, мне нужно посетить и Рим, — говорил он.

Afterward Paul felt compelled by the Spiritd to go over to Macedonia and Achaia before going to Jerusalem. “And after that,” he said, “I must go on to Rome!”

Он послал в Македонию двух помощников, Тимофея и Эраста, а сам еще на некоторое время остался в Aсии.

He sent his two assistants, Timothy and Erastus, ahead to Macedonia while he stayed awhile longer in the province of Asia.

В это время произошел большой мятеж из-за учения Иисуса.

About that time, serious trouble developed in Ephesus concerning the Way.

Человек по имени Димитрий, серебряных дел мастер, изготовлял из серебра модели храма Aртемиды и тем самым давал местным ремесленникам возможность заработать.

It began with Demetrius, a silversmith who had a large business manufacturing silver shrines of the Greek goddess Artemis.e He kept many craftsmen busy.

Он созвал их и других мастеровых и сказал: — Вы знаете, что эта работа дает нам хорошую прибыль.

He called them together, along with others employed in similar trades, and addressed them as follows: “Gentlemen, you know that our wealth comes from this business.

Но вы видите и слышите, что этот Павел убедил и ввел в заблуждение многих людей не только здесь в Эфесе, но и по всей Aсии. Он говорит, что боги, сделанные руками, — это вовсе не боги.

But as you have seen and heard, this man Paul has persuaded many people that handmade gods aren’t really gods at all. And he’s done this not only here in Ephesus but throughout the entire province!

Это грозит не только тем, что наше ремесло потеряет свое доброе имя, но и что храм великой богини Aртемиды будет считаться ни за что. И сама богиня, которую почитает вся Aсия и вселенная, будет лишена божественного величия!

Of course, I’m not just talking about the loss of public respect for our business. I’m also concerned that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will lose its influence and that Artemis — this magnificent goddess worshiped throughout the province of Asia and all around the world — will be robbed of her great prestige!”

Услышав это, они в ярости стали кричать: — Велика Aртемида Эфесская!

At this their anger boiled, and they began shouting, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

Вскоре весь город пришел в движение. Люди схватили спутников Павла македонян Гая и Aристарха, и все единодушно ринулись в театр.

Soon the whole city was filled with confusion. Everyone rushed to the amphitheater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, who were Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia.

Павел хотел выйти к народу, но ученики ему не позволили.

Paul wanted to go in, too, but the believers wouldn’t let him.

Даже некоторые из представителей провинциальной власти, друзья Павла, передали ему просьбу не появляться в театре.

Some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, also sent a message to him, begging him not to risk his life by entering the amphitheater.

Собравшиеся были в замешательстве, потому что одни кричали одно, другие другое. Большинство вообще не знали, зачем они пришли.

Inside, the people were all shouting, some one thing and some another. Everything was in confusion. In fact, most of them didn’t even know why they were there.

Из толпы выдвинули Aлександра, которого проталкивали иудеи. Aлександр жестом призвал народ к тишине, чтобы сказать защитную речь.

The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander forward and told him to explain the situation. He motioned for silence and tried to speak.

Но когда все узнали, что он иудей, то стали в один голос кричать: — Велика Aртемида Эфесская! И кричали около двух часов.

But when the crowd realized he was a Jew, they started shouting again and kept it up for about two hours: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”

Тогда к народу вышел один из начальников города. Он успокоил их и сказал: — Эфесяне, разве не известно всему миру, что город Эфес является хранителем храма великой Aртемиды и упавшего с небес образа?

At last the mayor was able to quiet them down enough to speak. “Citizens of Ephesus,” he said. “Everyone knows that Ephesus is the official guardian of the temple of the great Artemis, whose image fell down to us from heaven.

Это неопровержимый факт. Поэтому вы должны успокоиться и не делать ничего опрометчиво.

Since this is an undeniable fact, you should stay calm and not do anything rash.

Вы привели сюда этих людей, хотя ни один из них не обокрал храма и не похулил нашей богини.

You have brought these men here, but they have stolen nothing from the temple and have not spoken against our goddess.

Если у Димитрия и его коллег на кого-либо жалоба, то у нас для этого есть суд и проконсулы. Туда вы можете приносить обвинения друг на друга.

“If Demetrius and the craftsmen have a case against them, the courts are in session and the officials can hear the case at once. Let them make formal charges.

Если у вас есть еще какие-либо вопросы, то представьте их на рассмотрение законного собрания.

And if there are complaints about other matters, they can be settled in a legal assembly.

По причине сегодняшних событий нам грозит опасность быть обвиненными в мятеже, и в таком случае нам нечем будет оправдаться.

I am afraid we are in danger of being charged with rioting by the Roman government, since there is no cause for all this commotion. And if Rome demands an explanation, we won’t know what to say.”

С этими словами он распустил собрание.

fThen he dismissed them, and they dispersed.
